Finally!! I reached 100 Huge Axe today. It took a good amount of time since i relied on a decent creature population and respawn. Definitly underestimated it, especially between 99,90-100. I decided to go for the 100 around 6 months ago at skill 35. Since then i did nothing else and i mean literally nothing else in wurm then switching between the servers and fight 6-10h every day. With all the travelling around i met alot of great and interesting people, made new friends and saw many beautiful deeds out there! No creatures were harmed or killed during this grind...eh wait what? After checking the achievment window it seems that i killed around 56000 creatures in 6 months ( not sure how accurate this ingame function is though, a number of creatures arent counted on kill like sheeps etc.). Here is a screenshot of all the rare/supreme coins i gathered with all the fighting: I would also like to thank some people here: - Thanks to Simyaci and Cenotaph for improving my weapons, very reliable and perfect pricing! - Thanks to Pankivtanke for giving me information about the creature population on Pristine whenever i asked - Thanks to Zaj for shipping me over to a RoS server last minute to get my precious sleep bonus! - Thanks to all Locals who sold me some sleep powder when i was hunting and ran out of sleep bonus or helped me out when my horse died again (yea i went trough a bunch xD) I need a little break now from fighting. See you ingame o/ Warjack

Thank you so much for your input everyone! So many great descriptions of what draws you to Wurm. The nature of the video, will however be a simple "list" of things, so I won't go into any deep descriptions in this one, I will in some future videos however, so your lovely descriptions have not gone to waste! I've added some things you said and also modified which other games have some of the same things. Some of you were mentioning sandbox survival games such as Ark and Rust. From what I know, these are not MMOs but merely multiplayer games. Just as a reminder, like it says in the title - we're only talking about MMOs in this thread. And btw Warlander, this includes MMOs outside of the sandbox genre as well by the way in case you have more of your awesome notes! The whole point of this video will be to target MMO players out there who are tired of the "same-old, same-old" of their regular MMOs (which will mostly be theme parks). So I want to blow their minds with what you can do in Wurm. I will include anything that is unique to Wurm but also things that are very uncommon to find in any other MMO. Hence, keeping the uncommon things up there.

Getting a few people asking what this is so figured I would clarify. A Huge egg is a Dragon Egg. It is used to hatch a Dragon Hatchling. The dragon Hatchling can be killed for the potions / hide. I have been told that the dragon will spawn with a name if you rename the egg but I can not confirm that. Like all uniques this also gives you a small chance to get a tome when slayed.

Ask for real help & get it. While most games don't have a 24/7 "help" chat, I don't know any game where you can say "Hey, I just got attacked by a huge mess and could use a hand getting my body back" or "I've lost my boat." and people you may not even know will stop what they're doing to try and help.

Reliably make money in game! This isn't something I'm super into now, but when I played back in middle/high school, it was always a challenge to get my mom to let me buy premium. I had a lot of fun running around, casting strongwall and enchanted grass for people, and looting abandoned old deeds on Chaos. Ended up buying a phone and half of a laptop with money I made in Wurm, and it didn't feel like a chore doing it. There's a ton of options in this game, and most people can't or don't choose to do all of them.

As others have said in various ways: The journey is the destination. Somewhat a relic these days, most MMOs and other online games focus on speeding to some sort of endgame, with everything before it just becoming a long tutorial or time-sink to justify the monthly fee. With Wurm though, there is no end game. No one has reached 'max level'. Most similar to this would be Eve Online I would say and I'm sure that's part of a decreasingly small list of games.

About goals. I find a lot of the goals we make for ourselves in Wurm, mirror those we would like to achieve in the real world if we had the opportunity. Some even use Wurm to try out before pursuing their real life dream. Most of us live and work in increasingly pressurised, confined spaces in real life, and so the open world, vast landscapes and 'breathing room' offered by both Wurm Online and Wurm Unlimited servers, give us that living space we crave. Most MMO's offer large attractive landscapes to some degree, but few have the scope and depth of the border-less physical freedom we find in the Wurm world. Wurm also affords us many opportunities to learn and grow in spontaneous ways without regiment or prompting. Some people take longer to realise this than others, but Wurm provides a means to 'simply be' - offering an escape from artificial goals and pressures.

I went ahead and grouped all your points in few categories, my comments will be inlined like this text: When talking about "sandbox MMO's", I mean MMO's with core concepts similar to Wurm - land ownership, no exclusive/on-demand instances etc.

While I agree that what attracted me was the lack of external direction, i.e. choose your own stuff, many people find the completely open world off-putting. I've seen brand new players in chat asking, "but what do I do?" so many times. While some of the journal goals could use some polishing, the broad thrust is good, as it's a middle ground between being told exactly what to do all the time and no direction at all: most of the goals are things you'd probably do anyway (to some degree, at least), and they do encourage you to try bits of the game you haven't before. I'd done only a little fishing before journal goals, probably wouldn't have bothered to try the new fishing without the nudge; I found I really like the new system, which I guess is the intention (or part of it, anyway).

It's probably better to rephrase the question to be "what is the draw of Wurm" instead. When you open up a question like this, you can probably check the box for absolutely everything being available in other games. Most of the concepts that exist in gaming are not unique, even among the most successful games. Minecraft alone would probably check the box for about half of what's listed. You can obviously argue something along the lines of "Minecraft is not an MMO" which would simply lead into an argument about the definition of an MMO. My answer to the question of "what is the draw of Wurm" is choice of goal. In most games, you're tasked with some goal you're aiming towards completing. Some of them are very direct, like how EVE has a singular goal of obtaining ISK. Some are more indirect, like World of Warcraft and obtaining better gear. These aren't the only goals available in the game, but they're the "directed" ones so to speak, where the game is designed around allowing players to progress towards those goals. In Wurm Online, there isn't any real goal set for the player at all, and nothing guiding the player towards doing anything in particular. There's very little enticing someone to build a village, train a skill, or slay a certain creature. You are placed into the world and left to your own devices. You figure out how the game works and set your own goals. It's a shame that the very thing which was so interesting about Wurm is slowly being drained away. The old personal goals and new journal run in direct opposition to the idea of giving the player free choice. There is an arbitrary set of tasks laid out that players are encouraged to perform. This starts dictating the way players behave instead of allowing them to form their gameplay goals naturally. I'm curious how many new guard towers have been built specifically to satisfy the journal goal which requires it, instead of for the purpose of actually having a guard tower.

Wurm have that unique feature... where you want to do one thing today.. but to get that done.. you also need to get not two but three to four other things done properly.. to even start the first the way you want to... In that regard, you could start the day with one idea in mind and go through a week long adventure until reaching your goal or barely start working on it(now prepared to face it, well.. you think you are). Even when it all goes as planned, there's something to surprise you at the end of the day or the journey.

Fail to make kindling. Repeatedly. For me, the draw is the variety and range of stuff to do, where it all feels a little different. Too many MMOs everything feels basically the same, just different pictures.

Buy and sell items and account for real money on the forums of that game. Also land terraforming is available in Life is Fuedal.

Perform 10 actions and not gain a single skill tick (prayer ftl). Go out looking for herbs, and come back with a coin worth real currency. Get lost (seriously, wurm is one of the only games I have ever played where it is possible to get lost after years). Be able to plant hedges on one part of a tile, but not another.

I think seasons is a big thing I know it's already mentioned...but how many games have season based game elements (mostly in regards to crops and harvesting seasons, but also snow etc.) and seasons that are also visual in general?

Nobody likes to die do they? but in Wurm the flexibility and choice over how, where and when you decide to re-spawn after death is very useful. Perfect for that strategic comeback! I can't speak for all other MMOs, but in Wurm we can re-spawn at our own deeds, any nearby alliance deeds, starter deeds and tents. We can mail our inventories to ourselves, suicide to any spawn point, spend karma to summon our corpses back to us, and use priests to summon other players back to our location...meanwhile the Death Tab happily announces our demise to everyone on the server. I don't think many games embrace the inevitable nature of death in quite the same way! We are spoiled really!

Would also be cool if we could build stone items from the various cool bricks we have, namely slate, sandstone, marble, and normal rock.

+1 for forge improvement.. unreasonable work effort or materials.. to "keep" newer players using the default... and 'richer'/crazier people.. having something new to eye instead.. "Y?" - Y not?

Man I really got a laugh out of this one! First Elymas never heard of these "random" enkounters and then he politely states that he has no interest in participating in one. Both astonished and disappointed Enki accepts this rejection. The ending line of Elymas is classic! Best Random Enkounters story yet! Thanks for sharing =Ayes=
