If it's bone based then you should be able to edit animations on the fly without much fps loose. This mean you could make few idle animation, and blend them or randomize it little (like faster/slower, extra head rotation etc.).

Heh you forgot to mention Collada models are already in for static objects atleast . I launched unstable updater and I see lots of .dae downloading.
