Considering that you posted the file and get problem with update It looks like you saved the file?

You shouldn't do that, the file changes with every update as well, so if you try to start the new version with the old startfile you get problems.

try not starting from the saved file, but always from the web.

See current version in city hall:

http://wurmonline.com/forum/index.php?topic=69839.0

Run "javaws -viewer"  and choose Wurm or create a shortcut to java web start: "javaws.exe http://www.wurmonline.com/client/wurmclient.jnlp". (or wurmclient_unstable.jnlp)

I don't know the details of making a shortcut on Windows though.

Alternatively you can use the a browser favorite each time and choose open instead of save.

Have same problem too. Its a lot faster to load the game from saved file. But knowing it stops working with each update, i just re-download and save new wurmclient.jnlp from the website. This way i have direct shortcut to the game. But you gotta do it after every update. its nothing wrong with your Java.

Whenever I click the start button on the main page in firefox it opens a new tab with a hard link to the current client downloader. I just created a start bar folder on my start menu and drag and dropped it in there and now I have a hotlink to the latest downloader on my desktop/startbar. Only issue that is nothing is every time it start it opens a new blank tab as it loads the loader. I'm not that lazy to complain about that for having an updated client every time. :D

To install shortcuts for Wurm that work evne after updates you have 2 choices.

Install shortcuts via the Java control panel - temporary files - install shortcuts

or make a new shortcut and point javaws.exe to the online web application

For example this is the target for the shortcut to the stable client in Windows 7 x64

simply find out where your active javaws.exe is installed on your system and point your shortcut target accordingly.

Hi,

I don't know the details of making a shortcut on Windows though.

You can be helped. At first we need the directory of the Java web start application. A search for "javaws.exe" on your boot disk should reveal it.

It's usually here for 32bit Java:

C:\Windows\System32

and usually here for 64bit Java:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64

(this should suit for most installations of not age old Windows, as long as C:\ is your boot disk)

We'll call this the "working directory".

Now we'll add this working directory to a call to the Java web start app and to the URL of the Wurm client, nicely connected in a command line suitable form.

Stable client:

[working directory]\javaws.exe http://www.wurmonline.com/client/wurmclient.jnlp

Unstable client:

[working directory]\javaws.exe http://www.wurmonline.com/client/wurmclient_unstable.jnlp

Got it? Connected those strings? Isn't this hard, right?

(Hint: It helps to have a simple text editor open for such tasks, for instance NotePad or something more advanced)

For homework, here are all the possible valid strings - find out what will do what, and what's the one you want to use  ;-)

C:\Windows\System32\javaws.exe http://www.wurmonline.com/client/wurmclient.jnlp
C:\Windows\System32\javaws.exe http://www.wurmonline.com/client/wurmclient_unstable.jnlp
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\javaws.exe http://www.wurmonline.com/client/wurmclient.jnlp
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\javaws.exe http://www.wurmonline.com/client/wurmclient_unstable.jnlp

We'll call this the "target".

Sounds complicated? You don't understand really? You don't want to bother with all this IT babble? Well - you might play RL card games, too ...

But anyways, these following values should be safe in any case:

Default working directory:

C:\Windows\System32

Default target:

C:\Windows\System32\javaws.exe http://www.wurmonline.com/client/wurmclient.jnlp

Now, right click the desktop, "New" -> "Shortcut".

[list type=decimal]

[*]Should an assistant come up and ask you for the location of the element, paste the "target" of your choice shown above, stable or unstable, 32 or 64bit, or the default, as you desire.

It will ask you for a name then, well, "Joe", "Xandra" or "Wurm" are nice names, right? Choose one, type it.

[OK] now. You're done.

.

[*]No assistant? Don't worry:

Right click the newly created shortcut, chose "Properties", and have a look at the window that pops up. Tabs! It should come up with the "Shortcut" tab activated, at "Target" (first white line) paste the according "target" of your choice shown above, stable or unstable, 32 or 64bit, or the default, as you desire.

Below, at "Execute in" it's always the matching working directory from above.

[OK] now. You're nearly done.

Right click the new shortcut again, "rename". Regarding names, "Joe", "Xandra" or "Wurm" are nice names, right? Choose one, type it. [Enter], finished.

Isn't this a walk in the park?

Now you can start Wurm w/o browser from your desktop (or from wherever you move this shortcut), can utilize a 64bit Java if you have installed one, and as soon as the client is updated you'll have a short auto-download, and the brand new client after this.

Crazeee new tech! Praisez Fo for this!

And have a good time!

I just delete the wurm client and re download the new one works like a champ. I save it to my desktop then I can run like any other icon I have. When needed I delete it and do again with new one.

Lolabelle,  if you follow the instructions Xandra gave, it automates all of that for you.  Believe me, it is worth it.  I fought that for a long time until Manny showed me how to fix it.

Aye it is worth it.  I am not a computer wiz by any stretch and it only took me 5 minutes to setup.

I followd these instructions. I also downloaded 64 bit java and am running Explorer 9 64 bit edition.

Before I did this, and after I did this (and currently) I am at "downloading graphics jar 100%" and there I sit, stuck. The "play" button will not highlight whether I use a 64 bit browser, a 32 bit one (both Win Explorer) or the shorcut you provided.

Is Wurm having problems?

***Edit I can run the 32 bit stable so far from the shortcut, no AVG threat detected.

32 bit unstable hung up. **Edit The 32 bit unstable runs now--no AVG threat detected.

64 bit stable had the Blackhole toolkit AVG block, but ran. I promptly exited.

64 bit unstable also had the Blackhole toolkit AVG block, but ran. I promptly exited.

Posting this for information should it be useful.

Wurm does not work well with the 64 bit java yet,  can get sum odd graphic issues.

But yes at the moment Wurm is experiencing some issues.  Please be patient while they are sorted.  Probably take a few hours to a day.

Sure, no problem. I just wanted to post my experience in case it is of any help.

Can we get a proper launcher again, so we don't have to re-download the client, each and every time there is an update. It is REALLY UNPROFESSIONAL, and it turns off new and venerable clientele.

Your average noob doesn't know how to play around with java settings and it not fair to ask someone to do it or re-download the client with each update. Is this game back in Alpha testing or what?

I would like to suggest that Xandra's instructions for creating a Windows shortcut for the game client be stickied. For those that have not done this, these instructions will guide you through the process of setting up a shortcut that will continue to work even after client updates.
