Sacrifice of Fortune

Recommended Posts

So I have an idea to try and draw new players to Wurm and make some money to fund new updates. We've all sacrificed an item at an altar at least once and got something silly like an iron coin.

Well my proposal is to put that system into overdrive! Each day free players can make a free "Sac of Fortune" (premium players get 2) and the game guarantees a drop from a loot table that have common items like source salt, to rare skins, sorcery items, and even unique items to the loot table.

In addition players can buy more spins with Marks, and Marks could be easily made directly purchasable from the shop (one sac = 100 Marks). To give them a better chance at limited edition items they always dreamed about.

The new trader UI looks like it is already well designed to host such a system,  and Gacha mechanics already in game (Mark's shop), so should be very easy to develop.

An example item could be a Statue of Trader that gives a deed discount when placed, and could be recharged with items from droptable to keep it from being OP. This could have a modest drop rate of 0.6% meaning lucky players will feel rewarded,  and persistent players could spend upwards of 10,000-20,000 Marks.

But why cant these items just be available in the silver shop then?

This would most likely fall under Wurm's rule against gambling:

Quote

Gambling

Definition:

*Gambling is prohibited in Wurm Online due to Swedish law.

*Gambling is considered to be any type of activity where the winning of a prize is determined by chance and requires payment of any form to participate.

*Contests of chance requiring NO form of payment to participate are allowed.

Punishment: You may be given a directive, warned, or even banned based on the situation.

How is the current Marks shop not violating that though? We have two different rewards that are random and determined by chance. (Sorcery books and affinity)

So, wurm already has a beyond broken amount of RNG in place - adding in mechanics like this isn't something that is going to draw players in.  The marks shop's "random" options are already something I find mildly distasteful as they encourage gambling, however, and it is a big however, this is a small part of the game.  Lets be honest, unless you're willing to be slave labour (bulk crafting), the only ways to "play for free" are amazing luck (finding a unique or a cache) or rolling on forage/botanise - these mechanics definitely turn free players off to the game, and adding similar things isn't going to help (which is why a lot of new content hasn't bumped player numbers - it's all tied to rare rng).

I can see the motiviation behind the suggestion (up player engagement), but adding more skinner box mechanics isn't the path forward.  Especially since the ones we already have are driving away more players than they bring in.
