Freezes Computer?

Unfortunately, I only recently heard of this game from Minecraft's Site. Again, something rather unfortunate came up while trying to play for the first time. I downloaded the update, got logged in just fine, and after hearing the start-up music for a few seconds, my entire computer froze. The rest of the song still played, but I was unable to do anything, move the mouse, or type. I couldn't even forcequit. So, I shut down my computer (with the button) and tried again several times, each coming up the same. Log in, load, music, frozen. I would at least like to try this game, possibly buy it in the near future, but buying it would be pointless if I can't even play it.

Running on Ubuntu 9.10, open with Sun Java 6 Web

Tried opening with OpenJDK web and managed to get the game screen loaded, but then I got a Skype call and my computer froze again.

This sounds like an issue with graphics or sound drivers.

Could you post your console.[playername].log from your Wurm directory please

this isn't by any chance dropping a text file named hs_err or something like that on your desktop, is it?

If not, you might also try disabling FBO (though I am not sure that causes a problem with the Intel graphics chips).

Have you updated your graphics card drivers to their most current version? Probably won't make a difference, but always a good first step for troubleshooting any game.

Nothing pops up, nothing is working, also, I should add that the entire computer freezes, and not just the game, though the game is the problem.

Probably a bug in the graphics driver. Hard to tell what's going wrong there without any more information.

However,

OpenGL renderer: Mesa DRI Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset

is nowhere near being fast enough to run wurm properly.

Really? That damn graphics card is always screwing up with my games. It took me a month to figure out how to get Minecraft working on the bloody thing (And it still lags like no tomorrow unless I'm on the smallest render distance)

Once upon a time I had an excellent gaming computer, but it wouldn't burn discs so my family took it in without me and traded it in for a non-gaming computer. A lot less memory, difficult to run programs, and it looks terrible.

What would be a better graphics card I can buy? Maybe I'll find it cheap on Ebay...

... and no sound. Not that it would matter at that stage:

sudo apt-get install libopenal1

You could try to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 and see if the newer graphics driver does not crash the system - or, with that much RAM available, use the Live CD (preferrably install on a flash drive) and install wurm there for testing if you want to keep running an LTS version.

Well, I'm back, seeing as my family is sick of letting me use their computers to play this awesome game, and I've started Wurm in Dual Boot. (Windows XP)

It came up with a crash error, telling me to update my graphics driver. The thing is, I've tried doing this before when installing Minecraft and trying to get it work in XP, and I haven't gotten any of the updates for my intel chip to work. Any ideas? Should I put up the log from that?

What is the graphics chip on that laptop? That would help find out whether it supports the required OpenGL version for wurm.

To find it run Dxdiag and check the display tab - it should be there.
