Wurm using 100% of my cpu

Hello everyone.I have a Wurm/java problem.The client uses up all of my cpu (that is 100%).I don't know whats the problem . My cpu should be perfectly capable of running wurm. Here are my specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon 2 X2 245 (2-core 2.9 ghz)

GPU: Nvidia GeForce gt 610 (1gb video memory)

RAM: 2gb DDR3 533 mhz

I tried runnung the game in minimum graphic option,I tried lowering the resolution turning off animations etc. My cpu still works around 95%-100%. Its really annoying because I can run more modern games without any problems. For example Crysis 2 low-medium on 30-45 fps.If anyone has any idea how I can fix this let me know. I have all the drivers installed and my video drivers are updated.

have you tried disabling GLSL? 
(settings/compatibility/GLSL)

Hmmm, will be better to wait for the more of the knowledgeable people here, but 2gb ram sounds very low. I'm pretty sure wurms a ram-heavy game, that could be your problem.

Edit: also, I have a top-line gaming computer, can run all new games max graphics ect, but wurm can sometimes give weird issues... It's just how it's optimized I guess, so it may not even be your computer.

I tried turning it off and now its jumping betwen 85-99%. My opinion is wurm is quite badly optimised. It looks like a VERY old game even on max graphics but still requires wast amounts of cpu power and ram I think they should optimise it better... just saying

Im not saying the game is bad. Acctually the oposite I really enjoy the gameplay and the survival aspect but what I dont like is its lack of optimisation

I know what you mean, and I've been in the same situation with low available RAM in relation to Wurm's demands. It puts a lot of stress on the computer since it has to actively swap quite often. One thing I did that worked quite well was to lower the maximum texture sizes under "Advanced graphics". Unfortunately quite a lot of the newer elements such as the bar with "Lawful", "Climbing" etc have been forgotten in that regard so they will look like crap. You can toggle on the "old quickbar" to avoid having to use them.

The in-game maps are however not usable with low texture sizes.

Meh, I can run 6 clients on max fine. The issues are when something weird just happens, for instance, when you go into a city with a ton of statues. (Most) people lag there a ton, I don't, but here's the odd part, as soon as I "unload" it by getting out of local... Bam, disconnect.

It's crap like that, that makes no sense to me. No issues really with wurm except for things like that.

Wurm is Just weird. ATM on unstable I cannot log in in the middle of the steppe because it stutters and crashes. Being in a Item clustered mine, 3 chars easily, 4 if I want to keep my coffee warm if its near the laptop heat vent. 3 chars however, the third I log on will not see the other two, Items will be displaced 2-10 tiles and All sorts of other quirks. But I digress,

Wurm is special, I know people with really nice rigs who struggle with 2 clients, and then low end computers who have never had a problem. Can't be arsed to find out why, probably hardware related but meh.

I can run up to 7 game clients at a time with no problem (most of the time) on this box:

 

i7 920 (old processor, but not nearly as old as the OPs)

12 gigs of RAM

GTX 560 TI.

 

 

My computer is basically a dinosaur at this point, so I don't really think wurm optimization is as big of an issue as some people make it out to be.  The game has went through many updates.  Just because it ran once on a toaster doesn't mean it always will.

To be fair, the game itself is in the dinosaur age, by a very long shot.  Most people though just don't realize how much RAM these games take. (sandboxes) and thus experience lag until they upgrade. Though, as I said - that's only my guess and could be wrong as well.

You also  have 2gb of ram, if using vista or win7, that's the minimum.  You really need 4gb at least.

Ok thx for all of the replies. I was thinking of getting 2 more gigs of RAM and installing 64-bit win and 64-bit java and I will see if the performance has changed.

ive also noticed that if your running other programs with wurm it bogs down faster especially when running your web browser.

I been running wurm on 2gb ram and win xp last year and I can run up to four chars. Don't remember why now I upgraded but thread I linked below and disabling glsl will make your wurm looks pretty AND not taking much resources:
