32bit / 64bit

Recommended Posts

I don't know if my issue is related to the outage. I don't think it is.

After the update my Wurm Client gives me a popup saying I am currently running Wurm Online using 32-bit java on a 64-bit operating system.

1. Because I cant find an image of this popup online I assume its been created by Wurm devs.

2. I think I am running 64bit, its pointing to SysWOW64.

3. Earlier today I got in game and it seemed to be running fine. I have experienced the results of running 32bit on 64 bit and its dramatically different experience so I think I would have noticed.

If you're on a 64-bit version of Windows, SysWOW64 is ACTUALLY the 32-bit folder.  System32 is the 64-bit folder.  I know it seems counter-intuitive.  If you change the shortcut to point at System32 instead, you'll be on 64-bit, assuming a 64-bit OS and proper installation of the 64-bit version of Java.

that sounds very counter-intuitive. I will research that.

But its microsoft so...just like SharePoint isnt compatible with IE11 but is with Chrome....makes no sense

That got me into the client without issues, so once the servers are back up we shall see.

I think the updater they are using defaults to 32 bit so every time there is a major update it reverts back...or maybe it was always this way.

Regardless. I think Microsoft is just trolling us with those folder names

SysWOW64 is where it automatically redirects requests for 32 bit applications.  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WoW64 for more information.

This kinda sums it up.

The operating system uses the %SystemRoot%\system32 directory for its 64-bit library and executable files. This is done for backward compatibility reasons, as many legacy applications are hardcoded to use that path. When executing 32-bit applications, WoW64 transparently redirects 32-bit DLLs to %SystemRoot%\SysWoW64, which contains 32-bit libraries and executables. 32-bit applications are generally not aware that they are running on a 64-bit operating system.

So your 64-bit javaws is actually the one in system32, and your desktop shortcut to Wurm should point to system32 if you want to run the 64-bit java on a 64-bit Windows OS.

Cheers,

Mirax

The thing is, you can't instal 64bit JAVA only on 64bit system, since web browsers are 32bit and need 32bit JAVA to work.

And then, standard JAVAWS command, redirect to 32bit JAVA.

That's why BAT file is needed (or shortcut with same code inside as BAT file).

For Wurm to work you don't need the java browser plugin, so the 32bit browser argument is invalid. Just install 64bit Java if you are running a 64bit system.

I run Windows 7 64bit, Firefox 32bit, and Java ver 7 update 51 currently (32bit for Firefox). I also get the warning.

Wurm works fine for me, no problems I have noticed. I will not use I.E. 64 bit browser, nor will I use Waterfox or other replacement. I choose to stay with FireFox. So far no problems.

Yeah.

For WURM you don't need browser plugin, but any browser need it, and JAVA updater enforce it (check WoW64 directories).

I've installed JAVA 64bit only on fresh Windows 8 64bit.

Then updates came.

JAVA updated itself to both 32bit and 64bit, messed with JAR "magic" so it couldn't properly run JAR files (started with JAVAWS all the time), so I needed to fix it in register (bless for JARFix), and then WURM start crashing...

So now, I'm with BAT file to start WURM in 64bit JAVA.
