Assistance/Advice on new laptop for wurm needed

Recommended Posts

Ok so it's not just for Wurm, but I'd only purchase it if Wurm would run on it reliably.

I'm currently using an old rundown laptop and average 1-2FPS in game, unless I'm in the desert, or staring at the ground.

I decided to check online on craigslist to see if there were anymore decent priced gaming style laptops.

I AM NOT COMPUTER SMART!

So I'm asking for your help.

I came across this ad, and started discussing with the owner of the laptop. Here's what I know,

Ad states:

I have an Alienware M11x R1 gaming laptop for sale. It's the fastest netbook on the market. Plays all modern games. From my experience it gets 60fps playing Minecraft at Max settings, on battery power. You can game on it for 2-4 hours on battery power, depending on the game.
The laptop is fully functional, but with regular wear from being in a bag.

1.73ghz core 2 duo
4gb DDR3 RAM
1GB GeForce 335M GPU
250GB HDD

I currently have Ubuntu 13.10 installed on it, but it has the original Windows 7 disk from Alienware included.
I'll format the hard drive if you want me to.
Easiest may to reach me is through email. Thanks for your time.

Asking for $350 for the laptop.

The other Alienware laptops I've seen tend to go for much much more money, so I have asked why he is selling for $350. It may be obvious, but I honestly don't know enough about computers to make a final decision.

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Yeah, I'd prefer a laptop simply because I bring it with me when I travel back and forth between homes.

Any Laptop with 1 GB graphics card and 4 GB ram will run Wurm easily but still ask him how old is the laptop.

Also i recommend that u buy a new laptop instead and have warranty.

The technology is also and many companies are making gaming laptops for 500$.

So i don't think you want to take a 350 $ laptop and think that you could have got a lot better one, Brand new for a little more price.

Also very old laptops have a lot of issues like Battery issues.

Still Alienware is good company and u can believe in deal to play Wurm but u wont be play future games as they require High Graphics.

Hope this helps you.

I have Hp Envy 17 with ATI 6850M, and have 20-30fps with low medium settings.

And Radeon 6850M is at 158 place in Notebookcheck ranking, while GeForce 335M is at 261.

My envy have 2nd gen i5, 2.3GHz compared to 1.73GHz C2D in Alienware.

So, suspect 10-20fps from it in low medium settings.

Laptop gaming is more expensive than desktop gaming, if we're talking performance capacity. You'll probably want to spend at least $500-600 to get a gaming laptop worth it's name, that can run Wurm comfortably with half-decent settings. The craigslist laptop is weak, which unfortunately is something to expect from pretty much any machine listed at second-hand sites since that's where they end up once their owners swap it out for something more modern.

To get a laptop that actually "plays all modern games" you need to spend well above $1000.

Thanks for the information guys.

Unfortunately my budget doesn't allow me to think about purchasing anything over $500

If there is a desktop capable of playing high end games for under that amount I will consider it. I don't need a monitor as I already have one.

Edit:

He said it was a few years old, and he just needs $350 to finish building his new gaming pc.

Since you are budget constrained, if you (Or a competent friend) are comfortable doing a format/reinstall cycle, then I'd say go for it.  You will have a laptop that is capable of running Wurm at usable frame rates, albeit not at max graphics settings.

A new laptop with decent specs is going to be outside your $500 budget.

meh, if you cant just grab a cheap 10$ mouse and keyboard set and know someone w/ windows 7/8 this will play everything at 900-1080p on medium or above settings at 30+fps, and really most games it would be 1080p at high settings, some games youd have to mess around with the settings to get 40+fps average, thisll get 80+fps in wurm on high settings

Budget limit of less than $500 is very troublesome. You will, plain and simple, not find any new laptop capable of running Wurm at a comfortable speed for that amount of money.

The best option for a pressed budget is to assemble a stationary PC yourself. Retailers tend to not give you the best performance for your money and pre-built computers tend to have a bad balance between components (I.E lots of memory, but a weak graphics card). Assembling your own PC allows you to strike the best possible balance between performance and you'll save yourself the assembly cost.

I'd love to assemble my own, however I am not computer savvy. I can honestly say that even given instructions I would still misplace at least one important item, and put another in the wrong area.

I am open to getting a stationary desktop, just without the monitor, as I already have one.

Can you guys recommend anything good for under $500?

Just to clarify, if you find one that is $499 and one that is $200 and the $200 will still run the game with medium/low settings, go with that one. I need to save as much money as possible. My life takes very unexpected turns.

Not worth at all!!

For the same price (if your are from US) you can buy a new one and better. I just checked Walmart website and for 350USD they have a bunch of laptops better and new, so with a guarantee.

I'm from the US yes. Unfortunately Walmarts guarantee is not as straight forward as it seems as they make you pay for several things during the return process (at least  from reviews and such). I also don't have  any idea what to really look for. There are so many options and not enough information for people like me with limited knowledge.

Intel's Core 2 Duo processor was like 2007-2008.

Its a okay laptop even being so old; though, not sure it would play modern games well without some hardware tweaking (might be able to with low fps). On the other hand many games nowadays do try to design for a wider audience base than just bleeding edge hardware.

Its selling so cheap because most people dont realize how fast computers deprecate in value.

Personally though its still overpriced. Two hundred tops.

hes selling it for so 350$ because its very out of date, false advertising to call it "fastest notebook on the market" l0l0l

something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1J21AZ6504 isnt bad

He said NETbook not NOTEbook.. Big difference...  What he said was definitely true when the unit was new, but I don't know what's out there in that form factor now.

I would avoid any NETbook for gaming, even the Alienware units.

Any of these options should give you playable results around 15-30fps at low / medium settings:
