6th Year of No Wurm! Some tips for those wanting to quit.

Recommended Posts

Dear Mr. SelfImportant (Malvado),

"Going to make this years post a short one" Oh boy lucky us. Assuming we need you to jump up on the pulpit is pretty arrogant of you.

Let's see if I have got this straight.

1. You haven't played for 6 years, have been banned at least once, and want to give us advice? Holy crap!  Get over yourself.

2. You have been on the forum even though you haven't played for many years. That is just plain weird. I can see a few more forum checks, but you are still posting? Pathetic.

3. You give advice about addiction, yet youstill frequent here, and feel compelled to give advice? Seems like the blind leading the blind.

4. You should know that many people play Wurm for long hours and still have a life. Some of us even have kids.

I could be wrong, but from this submission of yours it looks like you still need help. You are obviously jonesing for a little Wurm,

"I don't want people to just quit Wurm for the sake of quitting (I would love wurm to succeed at the same levels as minecraft)"

Why do you care? You don't even play. You know this makes you sound kind of nuts, don't you?

Gee, I hope Wurm can survive and flourish without you. Save us.

Hello Malvado.

Good to see an old name still posting, glad you got past your addiction, I remember how you were when you played 12+ hours a day, never thought you'd make it past that.

Sad to see all the n00bs talking trash to a respected older player, so much disrespect and flaming for nothing.

Good to see Inventor posting too.

Going to make this years post a short one , but yes, I made another year of not playing the game and even staying more and more away from the forums than ever before ^_^ (having kids do help ) .

I don't want people to just quit Wurm for the sake of quitting (I would love wurm to succeed at the same levels as minecraft) , however if someone feels they have problems with playing way too much and think they are addicted to the game , then this might help :

*I personally got my main character banned from the game , but before that happened I probably went down from 6 - 12 ish hours a day to 3-4 hours a day. If you want to quit you should try to gradually decrease the time you play.

*Caring about the people you met here is something that also kept me pinned, the good thing is that with Facebook, messenger  , Irc and so on you can still keep in touch with those that you care about and it's easier to leave.

*Talk with someone about your addiction , it helps pinpoint the problem and realize if you are wasting your time. If you can't leave the game when a loved one needs you or wants to talk with you I'd say you have a problem.

Not much more to add , I guess other people that have been able to escape might contribute as well if they still watch the forums.

So , yes this is my last post!

Take Care.

Malvado.

+1

Take care

Love,

Planeteer, Entendu

it's pvp, they can wait or i'll lose all my stuff.

I don't have kids though.

Good work with not playing, if your happier because of it. then that's something to be happy about.

I didn't know you, but whether you come back to post again for what ever reason or not, good luck and take care.

When you have an addiction, be it gaming, porn, gambling, smoking or whatever, trying to punish yourself by completely quitting is no good. It will usually comes back later, probably as another form of addiction if not the same. The key is to keep the balance so as your life is not affected by it.

This is exactly why I grind smithing, tab out to porn, with the game I bet on the tube, chewing my Skoal. If you can't enjoy all of your addictions at one time, what is life worth living for?

Well, after...hell, I don't even know how long its been..6-7 years of playing, I've taperd off my game play over the last 6 months.  Some because my main PC died and i'm down to trying to log in with this crappy old laptop, and some because the game just grew too big (too many servers) but every new server was pretty much the same as the last one.

I look back at playing on GV, moving over to Freedom(Indy) and then think about what has changed for a new player comming to the game today vs. then.

My answer is, not much.

Yes, there has been a progression in the "Stuff" that's in the game, but overall it's still the same game, the same experience and the same old grind.

I know, you can cook a meal in just 2 min now vs 1 hour back in the old days and I know that a large anvil no longer weighs 50kg...but basicly, its just the same thing over and over and over.  Start a new chr on the new server cluster, pick a spot, plant a deed, race to max skills and sell junk before the market crashes..Rinse Repeat.

So I cut down my deeds to just 2 and I only pay my deed upkeep on them but all my chr's are currently non-premium.  I keep a house over by Halcyon and my house on GV on HoTs Lake.  A deed on Deli and the last one on Pristine.

But Malvado's posts still nag at me because I just can't seem to put this game to bed for the final time.  Maybe if this laptop dies I won't have a choice.

Hey, thats another way to quit!!

if the game is keeping you from doing something you want to do in life. be it education, search for a better job, create stronger relationships with friends or romantic interest, then by all means quit.

but if your playing the game in free time that would otherwise be spent watching TV or Youtube. or you have no desire to create more of a social life and you would sit there wasting the time anyway. what does it hurt?

i take a break every few months. the game just gets boring to me, or i accomplish a goal that i set for myself (building a huge mansion, or one of every ship, etc), and i just loose focus of where to go next and sit there staring at my food bar draining down instead of actually playing. thats when its time to top up the deed upkeep, put all your tools and important bits on your character inventory, and log out till you want to play again.

Rosedragon posted a video in this thread which raises some important issues, and hit very close to home for me. in our society, we have gotten so overly corporate and homogenized, that the individual does not matter. if you walked out of your job tomorrow, they would not even notice your absence. you don't matter. your contribution is generic and anyone can fill your shoes. i think i keep coming back to wurm for this very reason. its the closest thing to virtual reality survival that has come about yet. in wurm you can start with nothing and build everything with your own 2 hands. it throws back to a primitive time for humanity where the individual was everything because you were all that you had. in wurm your actions effect the environment in a visible way.

i would not say that wurm is an addiction for me. its more of a therapy. without some release from the stress and tension of modern society, my caveman brain would go insane.

Mal,

I think what the newbs bashing you here lack is the capacity to quantify the amount of your blood, sweat and tears you poured into this game during its infancy when they had still barely mastered the first Mario Bros on the NES or Kings Quest series.

They barely understand the history and back story of what Wurm is and was to those players prior to June 6, 2006 when Wurm went "prime time."  I for one am thankful for my interactions with you in the infancy stages of my wurm exposure...

Much Respect (and going on 4 years now I think without logging in),

Jarosz

PS.  its because of people like Mal that this game even exists today.

Even though you were a filthy white lighter, I agree with you, if you dont partake in the daily kchat circle jerk, most of the new players assume you know nothing about the game, I was actually talking to Dream Master the other day about un4 when I realized that there are probably only a handful of people still around who know who that is.

Glad to see bier posting as well, not enough of the alpha/beta crowd still around these days.

Never knew Mal, and don't care. This thread is useless without some content. Maybe you two should get together over some wine coolers and flesh out an early Wurm history thread.

On the one side It's kinda funny to see people posting here that have absolutely no clue what Mal, Jarosz, Zeno ad others are talking about. On the other side it's really sad to see how the community here on the forum has developed over the last couple of years. People like them (and many more) shaped this game, reported bugs and contributed tons of input and game play suggestions over years. They tested this game and played this game as it is intended to be played. Others (like Jarosz) setup an mechanism to support tons of players to finance premium time etc. Basically, all the above mentioned players and some of the older GM's (especially my favorite GM that plays on a BL char) helped people by investing their time. I'm really happy that I met them here in this game and I'm happy that I'm still in contact with some of them.

I'm pretty sure there does exist a community of older (alpha/beta) players that will return after Rolf has fixed Chaos. I'm looking forward for this day.

One would think that replies like the ones you've received would be enough to make you not miss the community. :/

Best of luck!

New players are what is keeping this game together and continue to shape it, not those that left 6 years ago...

Not all the new players are just throwing money at wurm either, a lot of US new players spend a huge amount of time in game helping others get started and come to terms with game mechanics.

Posting on a forum 6 years after last playing wurm is compleatly pointless in the terms of being productive no wonder they were received by active community members this way.

Some people just never get over there little problems I guess.

The reception of older players defending broken game mechanics 12 months ago was dumbfounding let alone 6 years,  being told by some of these "old-timers" don't let the door hit you on the way out is a joke.

6 yo+ players must have been very small minded to think the way your telling us, they walked out on a game the loved so much at the hopes some one else will fix it so they can come back?

ROFLMAO

Wurm is a great low-cost way to fill much of my leisure time whilst I succeed IRL - such is a fantastic way to real-life success, you need to cut down your real life expenses whilst you work your way to paradise on Earth - Wurm is an excellent weapon on this path.
