You claim to have updated drivers, but a quick google search of gxgmms1.sys turns up suggestions to update your video card drivers.  Not sure what video card you have but get the newst drivers from nvidia, amd or intel.

I said the shop had updated drivers for me, and that I'd tried installing manufacturer's-own drivers and had to use a restore point because installing that driver created new problems without fixing anything. My original technical specs are in OP spoiler, the replacement graphics card details are later in the OP. If anyone can help me figure out what driver package I need to download and install (I may have picked the wrong option - there were so MANY) and how to uninstall any old version that might interfere, I would be grateful.

According to this webpage, http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/fix-dxgmms1sys-bsod-problems-windows-7/

what I can understand of it anyway, it may be that using the most up-to-date driver is actually causing the problem.

Please understand I only use computers, I don't understand them. I'm not scared of trying to fix problems myself given a set of instructions on how to do so, but I barely know the difference between the BIOS and the registry as concepts and never touch any system tool beyond defrag and system restore unless instructed to.

Here is a guide to removing old video drivers, you may not have the AMD drivers installed as windows comes with drivers. If this is the case just install the new ones.

Link to the new drivers, I would use Catalyst Software Suite 13.9 the newest non beta drivers.
