Forgive me in advance if this is a bad idea because im not even entirely sure of it myself.  The only purpose i can think that this would serve is to keep track of sales?  I just think it would be a neat idea, maybe someone else could come up for some other uses out of the idea.

keep track of what though, like when you sell an item is gone so whats the point of having a big number when you can just be like

 

"sold 2 files"

 

total files sold: 2

this is a great idea, but serial numbers is not a good implementation

maybe carvings like dwarf fortress?

and name prefixes and suffixes to go along with those carvings?
it would be neat to track an item over a lifetime, so when you loot it off an enemy, deed, friendly player, etc you know whose it was and where it's been

Star Wars Galaxies had serial numbers I believe.
