Posted January 27, 2013 One of my friends found this game called The Universe Project. It sounds like Wurm but doesn't stay in the same era. Apparently as the game ages, more things are added to the game by the devs (that the players don't know about), which match the timeline, starting from the stone age, and promises of space flight and other futeristic things. All technology will have to be 'invented', they will also support buildings and production lines. They also say that the map size will be the same as earth. It looks as though it has passed the concept stage and prototypes are being made, plans are for a 2D top down for lower end specs (this will be in the initial release), and a 3D first person mode for higher end computers which will come laterSign up to eventually get a beta key here: http://lnc.hr/hjU2 (there's also a trailer in the link)To be honest it seems very ambitious, but if it does manage to be created, good bye family. They also have a blog here: http://universeproje...logspot.com.au/
Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) You're bumming referrals off everyone signing up through your link. Not cool man.If no one wants to support sneaky dealings but still want to sign up for information, use this link: http://launch2.universeprojects.com/ Edited January 27, 2013 by Laiwyn
Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) I have subscribed to their YouTube page and will see how it progresses looks like they are getting close to doing a Kickstarter. http://www.youtube.c...low=grid&view=0Edit: it has a referral system so if anyone wants to help out here is my link./>http://lnc.hr/aiC6 Edited January 27, 2013 by Kegan
Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) Rock Paper Shotgun is not so impressed. Heck you might even call them a little .. snarky?I've seen that video floating around and personally I think RPS hit the nail on the head:Every Promise Ever Made: The Universe Projecthttp://www.rockpaper...iverse-project/(they have a little tongue in check reference to Wurm Online too.. Snarky snarky!) Edited January 27, 2013 by Brash_Endeavors
Posted January 27, 2013 Cool concept, though like it suggests its very ambitious. A part of me doubt that this will go anywhere... Will have to wait and see I guess.
Posted January 27, 2013 To Laiwyn, I am referring this game to you, isn't that the idea of a 'referal'?It does look very ambitious, if a little dodgy, but if it does go through, then all the people who manage to get 12 referal's will get 50% off an awesome game.I really just wanted to get 6 referal's so that I get the updates on it's progress, which i now have, so any new people should use Kegan's link. Posted January 27, 2013 would t be bad if i asked you to post the progress updates you get on to this thread?
Posted January 27, 2013 I could put the updates here, just that i have a tendency to forget >.<I'll try, the updates haven't started yet though.
Posted January 27, 2013 The memory to have a game like this wont be affordable for at least 20 more years. This is the future, but a bit far in the future.
Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) I don't think that a game concept replicating human civilisation perfectly is possible in the current state of humanity. If it takes 371 days to walk around the entire planet and they're planning to start off with the stone age then I hope they only have one initial spawn point!!The trouble with this type of game is that it is simply impossible to put enough time into it for it to be plausible. It has taken humanity hundreds of thousands of years to have enough resources to graphically edit an image of a hat onto an image of an octopus:So I doubt that people will be able to, say, invent the wheel if they only have a few hours every evening to do so. Wurm works because time is 8 times faster than real life and because it's balanced to be possible to play. Maybe if the "Universe Project" began a few thousand years later and had NPCs that you could command, skills that grind when you aren't online etc then it'd be more plausible. Oh wait, that's called Eve Online Edited January 27, 2013 by Docterchese
Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) Its this stupid idea again? Seriously this was made like back in december or something im shocked people still talk about it? Its nothing more than a video narrated by some guy that shows a bunch of stickman drawings and explains some things. Their only update was posting a FAQ months ago, and they are already asking for money? This is a joke, we dont know anything about their company or about the people "making" this. Also i lost it at the end of the video where they showed phones and consoles. Almost as if they are trolling. Edited January 27, 2013 by atazs

Posted February 4, 2013 hmm after reading up on it more etc i think this is a hoax..... the pictures they use as "concept" look very familiar from Age of Empires! I hope it isnt a hoax as it sounds like an amazing game but it just doesnt sit well with me!
Posted February 4, 2013 This project is probably fake - they want to make this game popular, but this will be nothing special or new... if they will even manage to do anything.
Posted February 4, 2013 (edited) I swear if they did it though and it was realistic, we'd all be dead before any of us reached a new solar system...derpDoesnt sound feasable the programming thier talking about is way beyond us too many variables. However if they did manage it you know id jst gather an army and put you all to the sword With this referal thing i reckon its blatantly a prank or some kind of physiological survey lmao Edited February 4, 2013 by Crack

Posted February 8, 2013 Giving your money to these people is like pre-ordering spore. They're promising way more than they could possibly deliver.I pre-ordered spore, I'm not making that mistake twice. I'll wait and see if they have anything more promising than stick figures.
Posted February 8, 2013 (edited) I preordered spore and it was worth it, nice game. This universe project though, they need to show way more. I could pull out as much as they have done so far (except the mobile app part because I never programmed for anything else than personal computers, except some industry applications in embedded systems, but...). Posted February 13, 2013 I hope it goes well but it sounds a lot like (insert name of random sandbox here) that promised the earth and then players quit after a few weeks. i mean Xsyon was meant to be similar and had a lot better graphics but they tried to do too much in one go. sadly most of the games put forward a lot of Hype instead of keeping it simple and evolving the game as you learn the player base. Something like this just cannot work on mobile phones or consoles... The most promising "game" we have so far is outerra that you can already play and build on some extent. It also has the whole earth down to scale.Currently its just an engine for a sandbox game like this game promises Edited February 13, 2013 by atazs

The most promising "game" we have so far is outerra that you can already play and build on some extent. It also has the whole earth down to scale.Currently its just an engine for a sandbox game like this game promisesSomeone needs to make a sandbox game out of that engine. I have long wanted to play a sandbox game that colonizes a planet, combine wurm style terraforming, add water flow, with detailed fractal terrain from realistic elevation with the classic Alpha Centurai gameplay and I would quit Wurm and go colonize a plane instead.[edit]read up on Outterra at work today. It basically uses a lower rez height map for the world terrain (say 100m), then uses wavelets and fractals to generate realistic terrain details down to 1cm. This is much better than what Wurm is doing of using texture maps on the sloped tiles of the terrain maps, but the important thing is they both using the sloped tiles as their basic map.The problem is they have not broken that off into a game engine API for terrain, and have taken it further with grass/trees as fractals giving percentiles coverage for mixed terrain tile which can be generated in more details by the algorithm, so that part is not compatible with Wurm design since you cannot plant/cut individual trees., while grass is done with tile edge blending and sprite sparseness in Wurm the devs did say they planned to move to similar shader grass. The difference in this engine is you could have dirt and rocks realistically mixed in with grass. There is talk of a multiplayer game that allows you to view others object creations (like minecraft but more detailed) selling the alpha for $15.I like how they do roads using splined vectors that deform the terrain as an additional layer on top of the world.Outerra shoud outsource as a Wurm terrain engine revamp rather than them trying to make their own game world to demo their engine.
