Wurm Deserves An Award For It's Environment

Recommended Posts

Wurm appreciation thread!

I think the weather & environment in Wurm is stunning... at times.

Running graphics on high? Take a screenshot and throw it here. :)

I think we should make a counterpart thread and showcase the worst graphics, such as my fullscreen 800x600 with minimum settings ticked. Oh yeah. ;)

Looking forward to seeing what the real game looks like though, so keep them coming!

The partial eclipse amazed me, like many other things it is the little unnecessary things like this that make it a virtual world.

Apparently weather is client side though, based on local chat and alt flipping, that can be illusion breaking at times as good as it is. Wow look at the snow already!? Umm no it is thunderstorming can't you hear it?

Did not get a pic of it, but my newb neighbor settling in with his campfire as I hiked down into a valley, and all I could see was smoke drifting in the wind out of the tree line.

The environment is one of wurms strongest assets, that feeling of being alone as you wander through the wilderness is beautiful.

:P

I'll dig up some of my finer screenshots from running on really high settings. I also need to screenie some lightning at some point :P

Who needs to ever actually SEE anything. The best part is not knowing what's coming at you out of the fog banks.

Not client side, just location dependant. It can be raining in one spot and snowing in another (though you can only see one at a time)

Snow and rain are actually temperature (based on height and time of year) dependant, yeah

Ok my local chat was in a valley, I live on a mountain, guess it makes sense. Odd that I can hear the locals blacksmithing and cutting wood, but can't hear the thunderstorm they do! Did hear it the other day so in addition to the visual landscape, I want to give devs credit for an amazing auditory landscape. Too many games take the short route of theme music, ambiance is much harder todo, especially if accounting for reflections and direction and distance in a surround system. I hope we have more animal vocalizations and the noise they make in the woods in 1.0 so that a hunter can hunt with all their senses, and the noobs could be scared more at night.

This is a great thread. Wurm is probably the most ambient mmorpg out there. I've played just about all of them throughout the years, and wurm stands above them all. It's up there with MUD's for ambiance, and that was left purely to my own imagination. I wish more people would give Wurm a chance.

What do you guys & gals have your Anisotropic Texture Filtering set to?

I agree with the others, the environment is brilliant in wurm. Especially considering it can be terraformed. I like the fog, you don't get fog that thick in any other game I've ever played.

How about new graphic for slabs? They look too much like concrete...

There's something I don't like about slab textures but I can't quite put my finger on it.. I think it's because it's an odd shade of grey compared to cobblestone and the new brick wall texture. Also I think it looks too much like a rock surface at a distance.

I actually thought so until I started making them. I am still not entirely sure how I can mash rocks together and chip it into the slab without a crusher, lime, ash and water. The Romans had concrete so it is an archaic technology, but maybe they should look more like an Egyptian blocks or even Stonehenge slabs. Get some tool markings on there or something so they do not look like rocks with black lines.
