Posted December 9, 2008 So, my dad hit a deer with our car, and the deer disappeared, but ruined the front end of our car. The following day, my mom and dad went to Vegas for business, and called Leif's to see if they could run an estimate on our car. So they come and tow it, and everything's good and dandy, until my parents come home. Leif's wants $400 for 8 days of storage (my parents left Wednesday and got this charge on Monday. 6 days. Seem right?) and $194 for towing. Now, my dad just called and asked for an estimate. They haven't done anything, and told him that he needs to sign something in order for them to start working on it. Working includes doing an estimate, mind you. They wont allow him to pay this $600 with a credit card, either. Cash or cashier's checks. Something seems fishy here. They wont give my dad his car back until he pays them the $600, but he doesn't have a way to pay that, and the storage fee goes up $50 each day. They wont allow him to talk to anybody else except for the one sales rep he talked to at the place. It is Leif's National HQ and nobody knows Leif's phone number, where he is, or when he'll be back. At this point, there's nothing that this sales rep is doing for my dad. Now, to my question. Is it legal for them to do this? Or are they stealing our car? My dad is about ready to call a lawyer and see if they are stealing his car, in which case he will call the local sheriffs department and meet them there, demanding his car back. Anyone with any legal experience know what to do in this situation?
Posted December 9, 2008 Certainly sounds fishy to me, Nothing should need to be signed to do an estimate. I would agree that either your Dad gets some advice from a lawyer or speaks to the police!
Posted December 9, 2008 No legal experaince here... however... If I were you, I would send this to either KOIN news local 6 (they like the hear about stuff like this and may follow up on these types of 'procedures'), KATU 2 News (they really like to have a 'local impact' on the news). Maybe news channel 8 too and see who responds first. Make sure all your info is all valid first though... This does sound typical of many firms that think they are big shots and get people in a bind. But also they are so big in your area that looking bad in the eyes of the local public may make them take another look at their 'policies' I already think their commercails are wrong in stating "Call us first"... if you are involved in an accident, you clearly have other priorities first before calling 'Leif's". 911 if an injury accident. Local police if their is a violation suspected.
