Dependant on boat type

Rowboats, sailboats and the like would be ~3-4 weeks

Corbs-Knarrs would be a month, and caravels would have the full 2 months.

Since if a person hasn't looked at the forums for 2 months, they either don't care about their small boat, or quit, in which case it'd be nicer to be able to take those smaller ones.

+1, and if the original owner comes back within 2 months(6 for a caravel?) then they get the boat back, free of charge.

Boat salvaging is not intended as a means of making some cash, or getting a boat for little-to-no effort. It's supposed to allow people to trace stolen or 'drifted' vessels and help clear up stray boats that clutter up the server.

So -1. I'd be more in favour of extending salvage time by a month, sticking it in the new gm-pool-dock thingy, and then destroying the unclaimed boat.

or new idea, if a player believes in what gods there is in WURM(i only know what there is one called FO and valnora or something) the gods will make the boat lower a anchor and stay in place until the owner logs back in, or finds there boat, instead of drifting.
