Posted September 9 Sup guys! I was playing Wurm for the last week or so, and I did notice that I couldn't find animals in the wild, even agressive mobs. I walked A LOT in the map (Harmony) and I keep noticing the way that the wilds are so empty, not even a troll running behind me I found... Is this normal? Cause someone said that this happens cause the spawn limit is reached in that location, but even if I walk miles and miles I keep finding nothing. I know I can ask someone to sell me or give, but I like more a hardcore challange than receveing free stuff all the time (Sometimes even buying for me sounds like: Nah, im lazzy to do that so I'll buy it). And please, I'm a new player, I know this is a game made for creating a community and etc, but as I said I like sometimes challange my self to something hard to achieve, like finding the best ore, the best wood to cut down or the best animal to tame, so keep in mind that I didn't played the game for YEARS, and only a week and a half. This game is really new for me.
Posted September 9 Most of SFI is pretty wild, and can come upon animals on almost everystep... Harmony and Cadence are overpopulated, it's was my shock when i entered Cadence for the first time portals opened. Not sure what is situation like on NFI smaller server, Melody
Posted September 9 You're more likely to find wild animals on the older servers as they're less densely populated. Xanadu especially, it is 4x larger than Harmony, has much more wild space.
Posted September 9 You need to leave populated areas, because people in populated areas reduce the local animal population by killing the animals. There are thousands of wild animals on Harmony.
Posted September 9 ^this is also true, with the exception of Horses, which have been bred up past the natural spawn cap, so don't often spawn in the wild these days.
Posted September 9 (edited) I know my deed on Harmony always has trolls or other hostiles around it. The name of the deed is Sanderling Priory, and it's down a long stretch of road to the east from Heartland starter town by where that inland waterway is. It has its own waypoint on a catseye highway. Dangerous trip, though, for a new player. Trolls are deadly. PS: Wild farm animals spawn around there too. Last time I logged on there, this week, found a wandering young cow and young bull actually within the deed. I took the cow but left the bull to still wander. Posted September 9 I was coming home with an average of 5 to 8 mob bodies a day from the same area whilst working on a highway improvement project in Indy recently. Just have to go explore in the deep mountain valleys away from the built up areas and you will soon be overwhelmed and running to the nearest guard tower or safety hut. Posted September 9 (edited) To be absolutely clear, the server tries to keep the number of creatures at a set level. Some creature categories (horses) may be rare in the wild due to breeding, but all the aggressives are there and respawn as they are killed. All that's happening is that people kill them as they encounter them, so you end up with creatures being plenty where people don't go. When I go hunting on Harmony, I have no problem filling up a dozen large amphorae with butchery products a short drive from my deed. Posted September 9 (edited) Where are you on the Harmony Map? Do you know? A suggestion I would say, is to go to areas where there is Steppe or even just alot of Grass with no Trees that is also away from Deeds. Less monsters spawn around deeds but you will want to go further away from deeds as other people have said. Some wild animals like horses can swim in water but also you might find creatures up mountains, on high cliff drops. Though Steppe is a good place to start and while on the way you can look out for any wild tame creatures like cows, bulls...etc on the way. Make sure to look through trees while moving to see if you spot anything. You might get lucky and have some appear on the path you are on. As was the case for me the other day when some bulls and bison were on the highway. Also fallen deeds with animal pens are another place to check. You can find areas of past deeds on the Map by looking for built up roads but not all deed owners have put their name down to show on the map so you might also turn up at a deed that is active. A final suggestion is: If you want even more of an adventure after you gain more skills, you can either build a ship or buy one (As long as you can command it - Skills must be high enough) load it up with some animal crates and then sail to another server to try and find animals over there to bring back with you. I would say to head over to Melody if you decide to do the above idea ~ It is the smallest NFI server so less ground to travel. It also looks like it has some big steppe areas with some areas not having many deeds nearby. Perfect spots for animal spawns. Posted September 9 If you want animals, Defiance is ridiculously full to the point of being a shocking comparison to other maps
Posted September 10 As others have said, there are hostile mobs on Harmony. And since everybody go to the deserts and steppes to hunt, there can often be more mobs in the forests. People generally don't like forests because the mobs will jump them and their carts get stuck. Things like wolves, bears and trolls spawn spontaneously in association with tree tiles. There is always an annoying number of trolls in the forests around my deed on Western Harmony, and they are not from a fixed lair.
Posted September 10 16 hours ago, Derp said: If you want animals, Defiance is ridiculously full to the point of being a shocking comparison to other maps Generally true of any PvP map, relatively few deeds have a large stock of horses being bred and bred horses are regularly killed to keep the numbers down. Population tends to be dense around a few points on the map and the rest is just open land, with only small pathways at best and no productive activity going on. With fs now crossing to and from Defiance, it's not actually a bad idea to head over there and base yourself on the starter island to train combat skills, as long as you don't get too attached to your gear. Posted September 11 What is annoying on NFI (Harmony and Cadence equally) is that there is lack of donkeys for beginners. The old NFIers seemed to hate donkeys, and did not even think about public pens near the starter towns.
Posted September 11 Didn't Donkeys come in a year after Harmony opened? Hard to think of public pens for a creature that didn't exist at the time. There are a couple of free animal pens near the starter towns though, but often demand outstrips the supply.
Posted September 11 Xanadu has quite a lot of mobs. But large areas are inaccessible due to the whole server having huge mountains. Xanadu would have been a much nicer server if it had been mostly flat.

Anyway, my test alt never saw any free animal pen near the starter towns on Cadence, and to my knowledge neither on Harmony. Maybe that changed, though I doubt a bit. I cannot call these places very newbie friendly. No inns near the starter towns either.

Xanadu would have been a much nicer server if it had been mostly flat. Xanadu has an extended highway, road, tunnel and canal network allowing travel practically everywhere without need to climb the mountains unless one chooses to do so. Few areas are hard to reach such as some high plateaus, but that hard accessibility is part of their challenge and charm. The sheer size of the continent is indeed challenging too, and abhorrent for some. Farm animals like wild horses, sheep, fowl. bovines can be found almost everywhere, aggressive mobs are more frequent in some areas, especially in the north and center more than in many southern areas - though that may have changed as the migration patterns have been adjusted. For long time, creatures spawned tended to wander north, and crowded up there. A flat Xanadu would be dead boring :).

I think that's fixed nowadays. There used to be a few points in the area near my deed that would always have big crowds of passive mobs, but I haven't seen anything like that in a long time. It seems pretty evenly distributed now.
