Posted August 7 I tried today to do the crafting quest with a test character on guidance. None of the required steps completes. First I "made the mistake" not to do the steps in sequence, first created shafts and mallet, and small anvil plus butchering knife head after having mined some iron. Then, I tried to first cut an old tree. None of that caused the quest to go on. Btw. near the starter town, there is a rock area with an obelisk within the town named "mine here". Somebody already tried to tunnel, which results in a diagonal error. Sorry, but that is simply poor work.
Posted August 7 For that specific Quest on Guidance, you have to read the quest instructions VERY carefully. Doing those steps the old 'normal' way won't show them as being completed because the steps require using the toolbelt the new way. For example, cutting a tree: It says with a hatchet *in the toolbelt* cut down ...... If you cut down an old tree simply by activating the hatchet, the old tree will be cut down but that step of the mission won't be registered as completed because the hatchet wasn't placed in the toolbelt first. From what I saw, each step in the Mallets and Sickles Quest requires using the toolbelt, as if that was done intentionally to force new players to become familiar with doing it that way. Just speculating, I've no insider info there. And yes, they have to be completed in the order given with the Quest for each step to be recognized to continue on to the next step. Regarding the rock area with an obelisk and somebody trying to tunnel, I've not seen that but yes that would seem to be something that needs to be fixed/corrected. But again, I've not seen the site within the last couple days to know what mining issue's been caused at that mine.

[tools in toolbelt ..] Thanks for the hint, and yes, when using tools from the toolbelt, the quest progresses. But .. There is no mention that the quest will only progress when the tools are placed in the toolbelt, on contrary, activating by doublecklick in inventory is mentioned first. It would be quite a lot counter sandbox principles if one way would be considered superior over others. I still consider it a bug. If not, there should be an explicit hint that the toolbelt must be used, poor as that would be.
Posted August 9 The pop ups when you do the mouse over on the quest steps do give explicit instructions. The newer way isn't as intuitive so I expect that is why it is being forced to be done that way. However, the spot you pointed out can be clearer.
Posted August 9 (edited) If it is not a bug then it is a serious design flaw I much frown upon. I to some extent agree that a tutorial server with quests may give more guidance to beginners, and some more strictly guided ways may be appropriate. But forcing players to the newest pet feature the devs developped is breaking the sandbox nature of the game. There is not one way to achieve a goal, but several of them. The new toolbelt, action queue etc. may be nifty, but if they are so attractive, why does it need coercion to use them? But if it is required to use the toolbelt, that must not be hidden in some mouseover. As a matter of fact, this "feature" is certainly more confusing and frustrating than helpful. Posted August 9 One purpose of the new quests is to introduce fundamental gameplay mechanics to new players. This includes the new toolbelt feature. It isn't about it being anyone's "newest pet feature", it's about making sure that new players are familiar with an important part of the game. We understand if the in-game text or user interface could make it more obvious that this specific quest goal requires you to use the toolbelt, but that requirement itself is not a bug.
