Transcontinental Bridge

Recommended Posts

Have you ever wished that you could walk to another server? No? Neither have I, but I have often wished that I could ride my horse over because being at the mercy of the wind just sucks. Obviously we cant ride either because your horse wont cross servers outside of an animal cage but I can now announce the next best thing is possible.

Bloody Long Bridge

The bridge connects southern Harmony to northern Melody, you can ride to the server edges and park your horse on enchanted grass to wait in comfort for you while you visit the other side. The Harmony side is pretty deep so there is a small 5 tile swim and so long as you pass between the buoys you will teleport onto dry land. The Melody side is shallow enough that no swimming is required, just park your horse and drop off the edge of the server! If you do not have a horse available to you on the other side there are facilities to pick up a cheap throw away to service your needs.

Both servers have deeds that can be found on the highway system, 'Through the Never' on Harmony and 'Edge of Forever' on Melody and Cadence has been fitted with a couple of sandbanks to help prevent people plotting course onto it.

Would like to give thanks to Snurps for helping with a fair bit of digging and materials, Cavemannn for some dirt and most of the logs, Josklin for helping some of the large dirt drop sessions and finally Bipolarbear for his donation of a few thousand dirt and logs so that he could receive credit.

Some infrequently asked questions

Spoiler

How deep is the ocean on Harmony side? Roughly 1300 deep

How much dirt did you need? Im pretty bad with numbers but somewhere in the area of 564,000 so far

But Sme, that's a lot of dirt where did you get it all? I would have liked to buy a large chunk of it but people seem to think it is gold and that a bulk discount means an extra large crate or two, unfortunately I had to dig most of it myself.

Why did you make the bridges wooden arches? Because my sister and I wanted it to look like a rollercoaster and not too obstructive.

How many materials did you use? Somewhere in the ball park of 16,896 planks, 11,900 ribbons and 23,800 wooden beams.

How long did it take to build? About 7 months, I had help for the first 2ish.

Sme is always going where few wurmians (maybe none?) have gone before. This is pretty cool! Great job to you and all the contributors. Shortsword approves. ?

One of these days we shall see if loaded animal cages unto a creature transporter can be driven across borders.

Awesome work.

Wow, i've thought of doing something like this on a private server with faster timers but doing it on normal Wurm!

Massive congratulations on your diligence and hard work ???

Congratulations. Bridge between servers is long talked about topic and hopefully someone actually doing the best available at the moment will spark some new ideas for devs too (since animal cages can cross, other measures for few tiles should be possible as well).

Have you thought about setting an area around the bridge with free-use ships and animal cages? I know it requires trust to people only using those to cross the server to other side to park there, not sailing away with them. But Wurm is one of those games where that sort of community things can work.

Was hoping for those docks we were teased with quite some time ago ?

I'm not sure that I enjoy shipbuilding enough to make freely available knarrs though others could do it I suppose, however, I am far from finished with the project and could lend a hand if someone spots me in local.

I'm mainly SFI player and could offer much more help with projects there. But when NFI opened I of course had to have a look around, and I still have character there. Making ships and cages is something I like, so in future I might be able to help with that. Probably not within a month though, thanks to real life issues and my char in NFI being so underwhelming that everything takes twice as long, or more, as with my main in SFI.

Also I understand there would have to be commonly agreed idea that ships donated for the bridge end crossing over are for that only. So players would also monitor the usage a bit. I'm sure GM's don't want to get involved with many disputes on "abuse of free ships".

That is beautiful!  And, yes, it does look like a rollercoaster.

Very well done.  If only you put a toll on it, you have earned it.
