Posted September 20, 2023 Subject: Proposal for Skill Multiplier Buffs Near Fireplaces and Campfires Greetings, fellow denizens of Wurm Online! I hope this message finds you well as we continue our journey through the captivating landscapes of Wurm. Today, I'd like to propose an idea that could enhance our gaming experience while adding an immersive touch to our adventures - Skill Multiplier Buffs when near fireplaces or campfires. **The Concept:** Imagine, if you will, the warm crackling of a campfire or the cozy ambiance of a well-built fireplace. In the real world, such settings often inspire a sense of comfort and focus. In the world of Wurm, these moments could offer more than just visual and auditory pleasure. They could become a source of inspiration for our characters. **The Proposal:** I suggest implementing a system where players receive skill multiplier buffs when they are located within 2 tiles of a campfire or fireplace. Here's a brief breakdown of what I have in mind: - **Campfire Buff:** Players situated within 2 tiles of a campfire would receive a 2% skill multiplier buff. This bonus would reflect the sense of camaraderie and relaxation associated with sitting around a campfire, allowing for improved concentration and skill gain. - **Fireplace Buff:** For those fortunate enough to be near a well-constructed fireplace, a 4% skill multiplier buff would be granted within the same 2-tile radius. The warmth and comforting atmosphere of a roaring fireplace could significantly enhance our characters' abilities to learn and master various skills. **Why This Idea Matters:** 1. **Immersive Gameplay:** Wurm Online has always excelled in its attention to detail, and this feature would add another layer of immersion. It brings the natural world into the game in a way that makes sense, deepening our connection to the virtual world. 2. **Encouraging Community:** Campfires and fireplaces often serve as gathering points for players to share stories and experiences. By offering skill multiplier buffs, we encourage players to come together and form strong communities. 3. **Skill Progression:** Skill gain in Wurm is central to character development. This concept would provide players with a tangible benefit for creating and maintaining fires, thereby encouraging engagement with these essential gameplay mechanics. **Balancing Concerns:** To maintain game balance, there should be considerations such as the duration of the buff and its cooldown period. These mechanics could be fine-tuned through community feedback and developer adjustments. **Conclusion:** Incorporating skill multiplier buffs when players are near fireplaces or campfires is a concept that not only adds depth to our in-game experience but also celebrates the rich and vibrant Wurm Online community. I encourage all of you to share your thoughts and opinions on this proposal, and let's work together to continue making Wurm Online an even more immersive and enjoyable world to explore. Thank you for your time, and may your adventures in Wurm be filled with warmth, both figuratively and literally.

Instead, people will just build them wherever they are already skilling. 40 minutes ago, LordArth said: 3. **Skill Progression:** Skill gain in Wurm is central to character development. It means people would be encouraged to build fireplaces everywhere and have them running while doing anything that gains them skill. In silly places, too. Want to grind animal husbandry? Have a bunch of lit fireplaces throughout your pastures, or you're throwing away 4% skill gain. It also means you'd have to light and then keep up fireplaces whenever you're skilling, or again you're throwing away 4% skill gain. This would quickly turn into a hated chore. 40 minutes ago, LordArth said: **Balancing Concerns:** To maintain game balance, there should be considerations such as the duration of the buff and its cooldown period. You can certainly use ChatGPT to get started, but you need to edit it into a coherent whole that actually fits the subject at hand, or it's a waste of everyone's time. By default it is WAY too verbose. 1 hour ago, LordArth said: Subject: Proposal for Skill Multiplier Buffs Near Fireplaces and Campfires You are supposed to put this in the title, no point repeating it in the body of the post. Anyway, first mention of "idea: fire gives buffs". 1 hour ago, LordArth said: Greetings, fellow denizens of Wurm Online! This is the conversational styrofoam. This is overwrought to the point it reads like you're taking the piss. Also, second mention of "idea: fire gives buffs". 1 hour ago, LordArth said: **The Concept:** Imagine, if you will, the warm crackling of a campfire or the cozy ambiance of a well-built fireplace. Also, third mention of "idea: fire gives buffs". 1 hour ago, LordArth said: **The Proposal:** I suggest implementing a system where players receive skill multiplier buffs when they are located within 2 tiles of a campfire or fireplace. Here's a brief breakdown of what I have in mind: Fourth mention of "idea: fire gives buffs". This is why you need to edit, it's just padding for word count. Everything up to now could be one paragraph with two or three sentences. 1 hour ago, LordArth said: - **Campfire Buff:** Players situated within 2 tiles of a campfire would receive a 2% skill multiplier buff. This bonus would reflect the sense of camaraderie and relaxation associated with sitting around a campfire, allowing for improved concentration and skill gain. Anyone actually familiar with the game would realize that 99% of the time this buff would be used by someone on their own. There'd be no camaraderie and no relaxation and no sitting around the fire either. Claiming those things sounds tone deaf, like it's written by someone who knows about games in general and about what campfires do, but who doesn't really know much about Wurm. Which is basically ChatGPT's situation. 1 hour ago, LordArth said: - **Fireplace Buff:** For those fortunate enough to be near a well-constructed fireplace Same thing. Fortunate? Fireplaces are pretty easy to build. 1 hour ago, LordArth said: , a 4% skill multiplier buff would be granted within the same 2-tile radius. The warmth and comforting atmosphere of a roaring fireplace could significantly enhance our characters' abilities to learn and master various skills. Overwrought text again. 1 hour ago, LordArth said: **Why This Idea Matters:** 1. **Immersive Gameplay:** Wurm Online has always excelled in its attention to detail, and this feature would add another layer of immersion. It brings the natural world into the game in a way that makes sense, deepening our connection to the virtual world. This barely means anything. 1 hour ago, LordArth said: 2. **Encouraging Community:** Campfires and fireplaces often serve as gathering points for players to share stories and experiences. By offering skill multiplier buffs, we encourage players to come together and form strong communities. This is the most glaring example of "not familiar with the game". Fires are not gathering points like that in game, and the buffs would not encourage people to come together. Instead people would just build fires everywhere, and continue to talk in global and alliance chat. 1 hour ago, LordArth said: 3. **Skill Progression:** Skill gain in Wurm is central to character development. What essential gameplay mechanics? 1 hour ago, LordArth said: **Balancing Concerns:** To maintain game balance, there should be considerations such as the duration of the buff and its cooldown period. These mechanics could be fine-tuned through community feedback and developer adjustments. This is another "not familiar with the game" moment. The typical implementation for Wurm would just have the buff up as long as you are within range, with no cooldowns. 1 hour ago, LordArth said: **Conclusion:** Incorporating skill multiplier buffs when players are near fireplaces or campfires is a concept that not only adds depth to our in-game experience but also celebrates the rich and vibrant Wurm Online community. Claiming it celebrates the community is again overwrought to the point of taking the piss. 1 hour ago, LordArth said: I encourage all of you to share your thoughts and opinions on this proposal, and let's work together to continue making Wurm Online an even more immersive and enjoyable world to explore. Thank you for your time, and may your adventures in Wurm be filled with warmth, both figuratively and literally. That's a decent pun though. Anyway, in conclusion, this is why I think you shouldn't just copypaste what ChatGPT gives you.
Posted September 20, 2023 (edited) Instead of buffing a player made item that would only lead to cluttering everywhere why not simply add that buff to existing mechanics like holy sites where players already gather. Increasing skillgain of skills that correspond with the god of the holy site. That skillgain buff could rise and fall with the purity of the site and would players that are not priests allow to spend their time between site ticks with something usefull instead of just afk-ing. Also non priest chars would be tempted to pray more to speed up the occurence of the holy sites. Edited September 20, 2023 by Bekador

Posted September 20, 2023 Altar clutter is nuts. Let's not add to it with fireplace clutter. Also the lesson on ChatGPT is one I hope people listen to. Great tool, but also creates too much clutter. I stopped reading the suggestion part way into the first paragraph. If English isn't a language you are fluent in and writing out your ideas makes it difficult to read, I don't think anyone minds and I personally appreciate the genuine communication over AI fluff. I think AI needs to evolve a bit more and one day, we will all have our own personally trained AI assistants (locked with some very strong security I hope), that can emulate our own writing styles.
