[2009-12-26] New test client 2.6.9-1933 .. 2003

No rest for the wicked, we're moving on already. The main targets of this cycle are terrain quality and performance, advanced item selection (shift-click, ctrl-click), and a few other things contingent on server and art team.

The test client goes to the test server, the unstable client connects to the main servers. These clients will have bugs, crashes and bad performance. Do not use the unstable client if you have anything to lose.


Changes in 2.6.9-1933

* Make the pack updater more robust on unreliable connections. Main changes are to retry each piece of a pack individually, and to split up big files if downloading them in one go fails. This should make even the new graphics.jar possible to download inside the client.

Palisade gates no longer open in the middle, they open like one giant door. Not sure when this started, I just started running the unstable client. Besides the visual bug, they work as normal.

Minor errors:

Using toggle without parameters results in an error and not in help. Using any parameter with toggle makes it helpful.

(this was before the release and might be a server bug)

Currently running action timers are not stopped properly if death occurs while still performing an action. The timer only leaves the finishing stage when doing the next action.

It is part of the winter theme, actually. Funny story. Not sure if the art team is planning on fixing it this winter or the next, though. :)

More hammering on the pack updater... hopefully it's pretty solid by now.

Getting "1" as output instead of "Usage:" now, slightly better than an exception. :)

I noticed a performance issue with trees and the sky. When looking up diagonally through the foliage up to the sky, the frame rate dropped dramatically (to 9 from around 27). Having more ground than sky in view it was back to normal, and lots of trees with terrain behind didn't trigger the drop either.

The pick warnings are a bug. Console error messages had a second bug hidden behind the first bug.

I'd also like to know what happens to your foilage fps when you disable 'render sun glare'. Due to deferred rendering, there are cases where the debug timing is accumulated for the wrong stage. I believe this is one of them.

Glare should have been disabled all along. I enabled it now and will see if anything changes.

Will the old pack files be deleted automatically now that the stable client is also using the large files?

Due to deferred rendering, there are cases where the debug timing is accumulated for the wrong stage. I believe this is one of them.

With sun glare enabled, "Pick object" time was still very high with the mouse over the trees. When hovering over a window, Glare times were going back and forth from tiny to 50 ms with a duty cycle of around 50% - sound was stuttering in this case. With trees moving in the wind, there might be some unfortunate angles or polygon constellations.

The performance drop was most notable at sunset/dawn (unless it was just a coincidence, testing more on the next trip).

Ah sorry, I already deleted my configs folder and it's working fine, my computer froze/crashed while loading wurm (not wurm's fault) and I guess something messed up somewhere as next time when I loaded the client, the graphics settings were different and the password field blank, so I just deleted the folder and let everything be created again, all good now.

I'm getting periodic extreme fps drops with 1942. From 60fps down to less than 1, lasting for about 10 seconds then returning to normal. I managed to do a debug dump during the last one, maybe it's useful somehow:

This is release candidate for 2.6.9, going out early to make sure spring is supported in the stable client.

* Anchor the swaying grass at the bottom, not halfway up the sprite.

Grass is still moving at the bottom of the sprite. (Not a show stopper though) Farm stuff is dancing from the top of the sprite too.

Also version in bar at top of screen doesn't equal the client version (Mine still says 2.6.9-1942, although Desktop icon says 1968)

No, steppe not spreading is entirely a server issue, the test client doesn't have anything to do with it.
