Can't launch game suddenly

I was playing earlier this morning, logged back in this afternoon, was very laggy and then crashed out of the game. Since then I've not been able to even launch the client. I've spent about 4-5 hrs now trying to get it to work, but no success. When I launch the game, I get the small window that updates the Game Launcher and then nothing. No error, no client loading screen, nothing.

 

Things I've tried so far:

Downloaded the game 3x, deleted the shortcuts and installed new shortcuts after installing the game.

Updated drivers and even rolled back my graphics driver which updated today (Nvidia GeForce GT 710)

Ran the Wurm Uninstall and reinstalled the game

Looked for similar issues on this forum.

 

Any help, suggestions (other than get a new computer, as I'm already fully aware that my computer sucks), or really anything that would point me in the right direction to clear this up would be greatly appreciated. I play Wurm every.day. and am kinda going thru some withdrawals right now.

It seems alright. Windows Defender Firewall is managed by Avast and appears to be allowing Wurm.

Avast is purestrain garbage, and impossible to remove without reinstalling the computer.

 

And no, it's hard to figure out. It's something that can listen to the entire communication between you and the server, and either inject a package that tells your client to close the connection, or it's the server, or it's something injecting garbage into your client's process (i.e. Avast). Might even be your router, who knows.

 

Try leeching Internet access from someone else for a test, see if that helps. That at least would rule out your own PC.

I just tried it with my phone's mobile hotspot to see if it might be the router, but same issue, so it's definitely my PC. I'm at a complete loss here and don't really want to reinstall my computer.

Well, it's tedious trying to box in the culprit. That's just how the sausage is made.

 

Try these things:

a) try disabling the "firewall" component. I have little hope that this helps, but it's low effort

b) got an alt? Try logging in as an alt, maybe the server just hates your character. Unlikely, but similarly low effort

c) Got another device that can run wurm, or a friend you can steal borrow a laptop from for a few minutes? 

 

My experience with Windows AV vendors is that they can never be cleanly uninstalled and are bound to keep hijacking processes and messing with them even when disabled. And if I sound unusually grumpy about AV, it's because I just had to deal with yet another problem caused by an AV vendor (Sophos) going haywire at work…

I have uninstalled Avast, there are no instances of it showing on Task Manager. I'm currently running the computer with no firewall, which I'm not comfortable with but just trying to eliminate that as a possibility. As for the alt, I can't even get to the client screen to change to an alt, I double-click the Wurm icon and it shows the small Wurm Launch window which then disappears and nothing else happens (replay: https://gyazo.com/eade67be17ea816aeed2a3d9b21f530e). As for the alternate computer, all the other computers in the house are so old they're incapable of running Wurm, I know cause I've tried.

Try.. start menu's search or Win+R keys.. and run: CMD

ping <servername>.wurmonline.com

 

for example:
ping xanadu.wurmonline.com

 

  Do you have ping to the host?

 

Is there a chance to have old dns record in hosts file from some old mess/fix(in case login server changed ip recently)

check your hosts file for anything wurm-related (while you're in CMD):

type c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts   (this will just read and show the file's content in the console)

* do not delete anything if you don't know what you're doing there

 

Unsure for the controls for UAC and blocking stuff in win firewall, for UAC normally you can just make another user/admin account on your pc and try run the same application from the different user, should be prompted to allow or disable network access.

(pretty dumb.. but kind of quick thing to check)

 

Alternatives drag us to.. trying to run virtual machine to see if issue is your windows somehow.. or it's isp-related(because some isps run AV and filter, log and react to traffic)

Appreciate the help @Batolemaeusand @FinnnI ended up doing a Restore on my PC and YAY! I'm back in Wurm. Major downside is I lost all my settings in Wurm, passwords, setups, toolbelts, everything. Also, looks like i lost my passwords for Firefox, so that'll be so much fun, at least I was able to get my bookmarks back. I did make backups of all my logs in Wurm, so I do have those. One toon I'm worried about is the one I bought from Flubb prior to RMT going away, as that has a completely different password. Hope he's not holding something valuable, lol. Maybe that password is in an old chat log, hope so.

 

I do appreciate your help in this, still no clue what caused the sudden disruption. Important thing (for me) is I'm back, so everything else is an inconvenience. It's one thing if you plan on being away from Wurm, quite another when it's there one minute and gone the next. Was a rough 28 hrs, lol.
