Stuck on 15 fps

Hi, asking for help because I am at my wit’s end with this issue. I have tried every kind of graphic setting combination, my performance is the same whether I’m running low or high graphics, always 15 fps. 
 

I’ve tried uninstalling game, uninstalling java, but nothing seems to work. On the control panel shows that Wurm is only using 1.2 gigs of my 16 gb ram, and 14% CPU. I don’t know how to make it use more.

 

Players in my alliance and even on global have helped me try to crack this issue but it has been to no avail. Yesterday I went to Xan to drop something off and had 3-9 fps with consistent drops of 1 fps every second on the dot. For reference I live on Pristine away from any huge deeds or anything that would make me lag.

 

It’s frustrating because of the constant screen jittering and I can’t move items or open menus properly.

Post the file gamesettings.txt from %userprofile%\wurm\configs\$YOUR_PROFILE\

 

Some information on your computer also wouldn't go amiss, specifically the graphics card used and whether your computer is actually a laptop with both an integrated and dedicated graphics card.

Alright, nothing egregious as far as I can see.

 

The problem with your described symptoms is that it could be basically anything. So I'll have to take total stabs in the dark.

 

The 15 fps cap is suspicious since it's 60/4, and clean values are always suspicious. Could be the graphics driver interfering, like imposing the cap outright or doing some particularly screwed up vsync. Check in the control panel if there are any overrides for Wurm. Any kind of overlay is also immediately suspect.

 

The other thing is the long pause every 1 second. That screams of a severe memory limit on Java, which would force it to aggressively reclaim memory often. Since that is costly, it would tank performance.

 

How are you launching Wurm?

Are you using the "lowmem" preset from the launcher? If yes: don't.

 

With Wurm running, open Task Manager, go to the Details tab, right click on the name of any of the columns and choose "Select columns". Check "Command Line" and confirm with "Ok".

You may have to expand the Command Line column a bit, but you should be able to see what Parameters Wurm is running with. Of interest are the values of "-Xmx" and "-Xms".

Oh, well that's annoying. Guess you'd have to use Sysinternals Process Explorer to drill down into the Java environment instead. Might be worth doing, might be a complete red herring.

 

The Nvidia control panel used to have game-specific override as an option when I last had to interact with Nvidia on Windows.

 

Anything that interferes with the rendering process is a bit suspect, i.e. things like the Steam Overlay.

 

Unrelated, but curious: In %userprofile%\wurm\console.*.log, there's a block that begins with "=== OpenGL information ===", can you post the OpenGL vendor, renderer, and version strings?

I do not use steam I use the regular website launcher, and I've never toucher the GPU control panel

Do you have anyting like MSI Afterburner or Riva Tuner running?  Something that could possibly capping FPS outside of Wurm?

If you change the graphics profile in the Settings Graphics tab to "Minimum" does it still run at 15 fps ?

UPDATE:

 

running the game as an admin added 5 more fps to the client. now I am at 20 fps. not Ideal, and not a fix, but its progress. Please help me figure out this puzzle.

Your settings look fine, and with a 1070 you should be getting much more than 15-20fps.

 

Can you post a screenshot of your GPU stats from the Performance tab of the Task Manager while wurm is running? Curious to see if your GPU is pegged at 100% or not.

 

The only other thought I've had is checking if you have something like GeForce Experience installed and capping FPS globally.

UPDATE:
 

FIXED IT!!!

 

NVIDIA control panel setting for Power management mode was changed to High performance, and Vertical Sync was turned off

 

now I enjoy 120 fps of glory!!! Thank you all who helped me and Budda for mentioning the GPU performance, it hinted me to look into the power settings of the GPU.

Great news well done finding a solution.

 

I have been reading about the Nvidia control panel software there seems to be three possible settings for the Power Management Mode - Optimal Power (default setting), Adaptive, Maximum Performance. According to NVidia all three should automatically increase GPU performance up to maximum when it is needed. My guess is that it's failing to do that for Wurm possibly because it uses OpenGL. I am curious whether setting it to Adaptive instead of High Performance would also work.

 

You should be able to set the Power Management Mode per application in the Nvidia control panel so that Maximum Performance is only used for Wurm and not all the time.

 

NOTE - updating NVidia control panel/driver software may reset the Power Management mode back to Optimal.

 

It was the Vsync setting that caused the problem not the Power management mode.
