I agree to Merc, except that I accept them from lava fiends and hell hounds too. But anything below ql100 is not acceptable. Curious whether somebody can manage that from piles no matter whether stolen or not.

No, you can't make 100ql coal from piles.  90ql coal is doable but hard and you need ultra high skill, the best ql mats plus some luck. Not really possible in bulk.  85ql is about the highest in bulk that is reasonable in my view.  75ql is quite reasonable to make since can use oak piles and get that ql without too much trouble if the mats are decent ql.

What do you consider 'stolen' in this context?  Cut from trees off deed that have been planted by someone else at some point?  Cut on someone else's deed?  Picking up logs that someone else cut down but left lying around?

I would not buy charcoal.  I would get it for free by taking it from a found BSB at a fallen deed. That or take some from a community deed shared bsb. I only use it for making snowmen anyway
