Ubuntu 20.04 / Steam - crashes after game loads

I've been trying to get Steam / WURM to work on Ubuntu 22.04 and/or Ubuntu 20.04 - currently testing out 20.04, and the game crashes immediately after loading.

Also, this is a clean installation of Ubuntu 20.04 with Steam and WURM - with reboots after each step along the way.  I don't have a problem doing complete, clean re-installs if I made an error along the way, but I just thought I should ask at this point before I start removing java to test different versions of java and end up with the same results when I might be overlooking the simpler solution...

Wurm worked for me first time when using the launcher (not Steam), maybe try that?

You need to read crash logs in chronological order or you'll be chasing symptoms resulting from the actual problem.

 

In this case the hint is in the following line coming earlier:

It is trying to compile a shader while initialising GLFW. Shader compilation fails because a function called by the shader does not exist, which causes an error to be thrown. This causes GLFW to fail, which causes LWJGL to fail. As a result, Wurm catches fire and burns.

 

 

Wurm ships its own dependencies (mostly) so it's irrelevant what you install on your system.

I, um, yeah, er, forgot to load the drivers for Nvidia...

 

The give-away was what Batolemaeus mentioned about the "hint" in the earlier line in the log; I also looked at the link he provided - "A Short List of Bugs and Problems and Workarounds" - when I read the part where he said:

and I guess after sleeping it off for a few days when I read that I was like "Did you even install the drivers though???" - I didn't, so sorry for the issue guys.

 

I installed the Nvidia drivers for Ubuntu 20.04 (and I tested it on 22.04 today) and it worked just fine.

 

 

 

Batolemaeus, you might want to include a reminder for Ubuntu / Nvidia users in your "Short List" post for players to NOT be like me and actually make sure that they installed the Nvidia drivers on their Linux system.  They can check for the v/c and available drivers with the following command:

sudo ubuntu-drivers devices

and then if they see available drivers listed (for nvidia drivers, the current recommended will be the first one in the list), they can just have the system install the recommended driver with the following command:

sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

and that should do it.

Though I am relatively confident that nouveau would be able to run Wurm, just at atrocious frame rates. (Because Nvidia is a garbage company). I've run Wurm on pure software emulation for testing and all these drivers share a good lot of code.

 

I'll think about editing my post, but the forum search is good enough to find this one with all the keywords we've put into it now…
