Black Pearls

An incredibly unknown feature to Wurm is gaining clams when fishing, from these clams when pryed open you have a chance to gain a shiny pearl.

These pearls are actually used in the construction of a pearl necklace. The unfortunate part is a pearl necklace also requires a black pearl. Here is the annoyance...

 

I have found perhaps 3 black pearls(all turned into necklaces) that have ever existed in the entirety of Wurm. This came in with the "new" fishing system 4 years ago or so? Regardless, after cracking open 600 clams and getting roughly 10% to receive a regular pearl, not a single black pearl was garnered, I think it is safe to say that the drop rate for a black pearl could be tweaked to a bit more realistic value...

necklace is cosmetic, without unique model afaik;

fishing is annoying/boring/unrewarding;

pearls besides used for the creation of 1 decorative model, useless;

(omg.. I'd quit trying after seeing several of the things you have showed as "drop table")

 

actions taking minute/s to get a clam.. also costing fatigue... and for that loot.. #I-AM-NOT-SURPRISED

 

allow people to use hq/woa nets, remove fatigue, and you'll see these show up more often on the market.. people could also start spending a few minutes a day to try their luck.. just to get item with no model(uses template of another necklace)

I completely agree on rare items staying rare but pearl necklaces are a cosmetic item, not a functional item like a weapon or a tool.

There are likely more capes in the game than there are pearl necklaces. I do think they are a nice item to keep rare but this is beyond rare, supreme, or fantastic, this is neigh impossible at this rate...

As the proud owner of one of the few black pearl necklaces in game, I will say that I love how rare they are. .. makes the gift that much more special :)

(Ty @VirusMD)  Also, while they have the generic medallion model when placed, they certainly have a unique model when worn!

As another lucky owner of one of the pearl necklaces I agree with what Goldfinch said. They do have a unique model when worn, which makes them special, not to mention how hard it is to find the black pearl (took me a very long time to finish my necklace and in the end I did have to buy the black pearl, which I don't mind at all.) I'd not like to see them become commonplace, it's nice to have some rare to find items, but I'd also not mind them being a tad easier to find then they currently are.

I've been fishing for 4 years with a rare fishing net and out of the hundreds of clams so far...I haven't got 1 single black pearl. Not one. 

 

I have 99.9 fishing, so skill shouldn't be a factor. Tell me this is good design without being sarcastic. 

 

It's one thing to set up an item as being rare and "hard to earn" (such as the master cape from journal goals). It's another thing to chalk up something to pure 100% RNG and call it fun game design. 100% RNG is not good game design. Ever. In any game. Sorry for being salty, but I'd rather earn a black pearl to make a necklace too without relying on the grace of the gods and a 100 ql supreme rabbit's foot to grace a poor mortal with some luck with a black stone. 

 

End rant.

 

Tl:dr : Increase drop pearl chance. It's ridiculous.

I like that we have something in the game that is so extremely rare, and I especially like that it's just luck if you get one or not. That means everyone has a chance of finding this special treasure at any time, not just power grinders with the fanciest gear and perfectly optimized technique. The fact that it's so elusive means I don't go fishing specifically to find it, but it's always in the back of my mind as something that could happen, and that possibility adds a little excitement every time I catch a clam. It helps that clams can have lots of different items in them, so it's not just a matter of pearl or nothing. I like it the way it is, and I wouldn't want it changed.

There are a lot of amazing things to find in wurm; the trouble is they're all gated behind worse odds than winning a jackpot in a casino (take it from someone who used to rig the machines).

 

However, it is nice for some items to be that rare.  I'd opt for a middle ground, create a new "pearl necklace" item that doesn't need a black pearl and has a different model.  It keeps certain items as a genuine rarity (the existing variant), but also opens up a use for pearls for the rest of us with actual lives.

As fishing is already pretty unrewarding I think this is a fine idea. Maybe a 1/500 would be a good spot to try. Doesn't have to be a permanent place for it. I also like a lot of the other ideas floating in this forum that I wish were made into their own posts rather than being hidden here. We should totally have normal pearl necklaces too.
