Rift Point Ordering: Shoulder Pads various materials

The shop says: "These armour pieces come in a variety of materials and designs," Does that mean that one wastes e.g. 900 points for a tin shoulder pad?

 

In other words: Is that RNG lottery or choice, or a catch all text because e.g. dragon used to be steel, triple cotton etc. ?
