Why do you play Wurm?

Recommended Posts

I was asked this question a while back, and at the time my answer was simple: It helps me regulate. However just about any online game will help there, so why specifically Wurm? That answer is as complex as Wurm is, but I want to break it down, explain it, and possibly hear from some of you all why you play Wurm.

Wurm has something very 'unique' about it: its skilling system. in some ways it is as difficult as RL is, and creating/accomplishing anything in game is just as rewarding as creating/accomplishing things in real life. I cant always be physical. RL limits things i can do, Wurm gives me the ability to have that rush of endorphins that one associates with doing real life tasks.

So, Why do you all play Wurm?

In many ways, my reasons are the same as yours. However, Wurm also contains my second family - the Staff. Without them, I'd probably have kept on being on and off.

Wurm is insanely detailed and there's always something to do, the social aspect is unbeatable and there's always someone to talk to.

It's the reason I "came through the portal" over 10 years ago and I'm still here :)

Bending game world to our will. Not many games have that. Most focused on characters and conflicts.

I've been playing wurm off and of since 2009 found the game while recovering from surgery.  I found it can be as peaceful and relaxing as you want it to be. log in casually and get a few things done, or play hard and grind skills, hunt, build craft ect..

I often for past 8 yrs take long breaks from the game. i just log in weekly to tend to animals and log off.  then from time to time I'll come back and play months straight .  I do get bored often. but it also depends if others are around.

the streamers often pull me back in. when the factional fight brothers start streaming again after their breaks. I often come back for a bit. also Katspurr's streams help pull me in when i see new ideas I could try.

when steam released a year ago i came back added 5 characters to then NFI and a few deeds. bought 3 month prem on each and 2 gold coins. came in hard and played hard for 2 months, then really missed my mains from SFI  , i couldn't handle grinding all over. so i just landscaped the deeds and collect mats. and farm and ranching now.  just waiting for the merger which could be years.  so i left for months  came back in april and was invited to an alliance in the area. helped with a Canal project, and had folks to just chat with while i play.

playing over 10 years and still learning so many things.  i had no idea on these affinity foods pizza's and rune items.  that changed me.  now i've been playing hard 5 months enjoying the same things as i did before, still not grinding skills much, just doing what i need as i need them.  Because of the community , I find this game so appealing . It does bug me that the population is so spread out. i watched the stats of harmony with 1200 deeds go below 600 2 months ago while there is still a bloody oneway portal to cadance at the starter towns. the servers population has been pulled off , that there's a ton of coastal land available now at least, but so few playing now it sits empty.  i'll stop the rant there could go on a long time (I am hating the negitivity that seems to be coming out from some now too I feel they should just leave and take a break for a while , come back in a few months, vs put down the devs and this game. would hate to see the forums look like world of warcraft community players).  I do love the game and wish so much more for it, if i could win the lotto i'd put money myself into advertising it.

to end this ,  I play wurm for the truest sandbox there it out there. do what i wand when and how i want. (as i nice player of course) just pay my upkeep for the year and not worry about having to do anything.  and i play because of the community .

I like being creative with my village friends.

Building houses, terraforming deeds to look great and so on.

I would really enjoy more types of house walls and such to be able to build new types of structures.

As said, it is the deepest sandbox there is. Also the only one to have an actual living (plant) world. Plus a gazillion other things in the creation and socialising spheres.

It is the grandmaster of sandbox games.

I stopped :(,  had a lot of hope that steam launch would provide funding for quicker development.  That obviously was not the case.

I find it relaxing.

Also, the game mechanics can be fun to reverse-engineer.

It suits me.. I have been playing nearly 8 years and I've certainly tried other games but none have come close to the fun I have here.

I play Wurm because it acts like a magnet on my mouse and fingers for the following reasons:

a) The incredible landscapes and the total immersion that it affords me.

b) When I play I can forget the real-life challenges to focus on my Wurm life. This usually means I can relax after work and recharge my 'batteries'.

c) Everything on my deed(s) is created by me and even after many years playing, there are so many things left that I have to do. In Wurm the only thing that prevents me doing anything is me!

d) As many folks say through the forums, the players are- almost without exception- a most friendly, helpful group. I always hear 'senior' Wurm players on my most-played server- Pristine- going out of their way to help newer players.

e) I believe we ought to be thanking the development team for the way that updates have been regularly added to our game. I did not like the cooking update to begin  with (because I did not fully understand it) but now love it- especially the brewing aspect. The fishing update and AH updates are still challenging my inadequate brain but I honestly believe that one day I will work it all out! Change is sometimes difficult for me and others to work with but I have found that with effort I can succeed and that of course is an additional challenge that Wurm can throw at us.

f) I simply want to see how Wurm evolves further during the next years and this little thought is enough to ensure that I continue playing for the foreseeable future- I simply hope that many others will agree and continue to support Wurm. We can of course as loyal paying customers show our concerns about the path(s) taken, we can test and cajole the development team but let us do it in a positive manner and contribute even more as a group towards this great work of computer art!

g) Final- and most important point- I simply enjoy playing Wurm.

I like to go bush, and in real life have a nice bush-block getaway, but real life has kept me from that for a few years now.  I specifically went digging around the internet for a very particular kind of game - sandbox, putting up a wooden building, not merely open-world but almost granular ability to shape the world - Wurm was about the fourth game I tried and I discovered that - despite technical challenges and room for improvement - it was almost exactly the virtual cabin-in-the-woods I was looking for.

It is now my virtual get away.

I joined for the potential, and stuck around for the folks I've met.

If it weren't for JAS poking me with ideas, I'd have left a long time ago with most of the other folks who played from my era (I've "done it all" as a priest, at least in any meaningful sense of my own goals).

I don't regret staying; I've met some amazing people on wurm who've enhanced my life.  I hope to meet many more, though the current newbie shortage on Xanadu is a bit of a bugger for that.

I came across Wurm many years ago, and tried to play, but my potato lacked the ability at the time, so I waited until I managed to get a better potato, and found myself in North Western Independence, in the woods, huddled over a campfire, not knowing what on Wurm I’d let myself in for. However, I chanced upon friendly natives, who took pity on me, helped me find a place to build my first shack, encouraged me to learn and grow. And here I am still, after walking on every single Wurm server since I began to play, I still have a deed on Independence, though just now I’m mainly focussed on my place on Serenity.

Why do I still play? There are hundreds of games that while similar to Wurm, lack that essentially Wurmian experience, it’s not pretty graphics, it’s not fancy effects or the ability to shape the land and build stuff, it’s the people, the community, the whole crazy, frustrating, lovable and wonderful people I have run into, even those who killed me and robbed my corpses on Epic.

I play Wurm because I can, because it’s there, and because I’m a part of a diverse community who all play Wurm with me.

I played for the animals, breeding system and the complicated and rewarding skill based crafting.

and the community up at all hours from multiple countries in my alliance. but thats generally one of my reasons for playing any mmo. so its not uniquely a reason I played wurm.

While most other mmo try to hold your hand all the way, Wurm offers the most freedom of creativity I know about in any mmo. Also, I am not a fan of fighting. In Wurm that is not the main focus of the game.

Too many reasons, most of them already mentioned and Liked.

But also the skybox and the seasonal changes and the weather... Basically everything NOT in my control.

In addition, I enjoy the interaction with enemy PvPers. I have not found anything so purely joyful and hilariously absurd, as that moment when I know it's totally hopeless and respawn is inevitable. If I were not such a pathetic opponent for others as to provide no real challenge yet, I would gladly die to being zerged every day. I find it liberating to know that there's nothing I can do to prevent that outcome, and that it is bringing at least some fun and content for others for me to be their enemy. I really enjoy being the moving target they succeed in defeating, as opposed to the dumb mobs they find little challenge in.

I met my wife over 20 years ago in Ultima Online, in many ways a similar game to Wurm Online yet so different, but two major things they both have: community togetherness and freedom to create.  Community togetherness in UO was in a big way created by the game developer, every now and again an event would appear on a grand scale where you simply had to team up with many other players to push the event's zombies, trolls, ettin's etc back. Here in Wurm we have rifts doing the same job, though a lot more controllable here than in UO. I've attended many a rift on Epic, still have my first rift on Freedom to come though - sorry Xanadu.

My first try at Wurm Online goes back many years, and back then it was the absolute freedom to do what you want when you want if you want, that captured me. I remember the patch where tunnelling into a mountain became possible, only increasing that freedom. Sadly that same patch literally killed my old pc's capability to play Wurm, so I left shortly after. Long have I forgotten my account name for that avatar back then heh.

I play Wurm because it's quite simply the best game - and have been for many years - where my wife and I actually interact in a game and play together more than just logging in to a game together. I count tiles for a highway to a deed through a mountain, she helps mining it out, she creates a ship, I mine the lead for the anchor etc.

I enjoy the feeling of progression.

Which many other mmorpg's offers too, I guess, but wurm offers it on a much larger scale.

... but then again, some mmorpg's offers the feeling of regression every 6 months or so nowadays (*harkLLL*WorldofWracraft*HARRRKKKKKLLHH*.. scuseme), which just helps wurm stand out even more in that regard.

At this point after more than a decade i think the most honest answer i could give is that im stuck in an abusive relationship. In the beginning things were amazing, sure he broke things from time to time but its only human and we were great together. We built and crafted and we changed the world together, traveling to wonderful far places meeting great people we were in love.

Then it started with a broken promise and throwing away my belongings like they were nothing, he kept taking and breaking and then would say that he was sorry and would try to be better. There would be promises of things to come that never did while still breaking and taking things away. He started driving all my friends away and isolating me so that all i had left was him and eventually i couldnt be alone anymore, i snuck away to find greener pastures. While i was gone i still saw him in small pieces but regularly, i was just afraid to completely let go and thats when he made the grand promise that this time things really would be better and different.

I came back and once again im back in the loop of things being broken with empty promises and once again all my friends have been turned away and i am alone, with him, afraid what will be broken next.
