Thanks to everyone who let me know about the database errors today. This is what Stormfall's log printed during startup this morning:

I can only say that the backup applied fails to even start correctly, which is a more extreme error than has existed on that service for more than a month at least. It has not correctly restored the state of the service. I have named the failed backup "Pingperfect failed rollback"; you are welcome to try to get it to start correctly.

Our daily backups don't have any issues with the state of the service when taken. We've been using them for many years with no issues.

Our senior tech team will follow up with you on the issue with the in-gamepanel backups not showing up.

I have reverted to the previous situation where the database on the login server was corrupted but at least players could get through to the other non-login servers.

The backups run via gamepanel are not the same as our daily backups which only we have access to as they're stored off-server.

I've restored the backup from the 29th. The original game save is re-named with .bak on it now.

I'm going to escalate the issue with the gamepanel backup world function to our senior tech team to look at, I suspect it may be related to the cluster. Our senior tech team is available during UK business hours, Monday through Friday but they do check in during other times. They will follow up with you as soon as possible.

A backup that was created at 4am on the 29th would be fine, thank you.

Does that mean that the scripts I run, which shut down each of my 4 servers at 7am UK time to back them up, are not accomplishing anything?

Our backups run at / around 4 am local server time each day so the backup for the 29th had already been run by 7am UK time. We can try restoring that one or we would need to look at the prior or ascendant backup.

I need it to be restored to October 29th, not October 30th. October 30th should be the most recent, but in the startup log generated immediately after it shows a database error and my players are seeing that their items have disappeared.

I back up my servers daily and have attached proof for the relevant service. Today I had the first database error so needed to roll back for the first time. But there are no backups listed (image attached). It looks like I have let down a lot of people. Please let me know what mistake I made or what I am missing.

Everyone who is currently on Stormfall: Please log on when you can and verify that you have the items you had on October 21st.

 

Skills should only have been rolled back a few hours. Items were rolled back to the 21st of October. Please let me know if you are missing anything important from October 21st. And let me know if you created/obtained anything important since then. I will try to replace it.

I do not play on Unlimited now but have read with interest how you have set up your server and if one thing stands out it is the effort that you put in to create a 'game experience' for your players.

 

The way that you have dealt with this setback speaks volumes for your dedication. Your supporters are fortunate to have you at the helm.

There was one last issue to resolve. Because I only rolled back the item database, the players database has the wrong inventory ids. This is because inventories are effectively containers and are also saved as items in the database. When the item database became corrupt, it created new inventories. I solved this by manually updating the inventory ids of everyone who has been on Stormfall since October 21st. This doesn't affect anyone who hasn't been on that specific server during that specific time. Grimshaw is the person who helped me discover this bug (their inventory was empty), and has now helped confirm that it is resolved (their inventory is full).

I have launched a Patreon page for those who would like to support me with some ideas I have for expanding this cluster:

 

I know this seems a bit hypocritical with me saying in my opening post that one of my principles is "no monetising"; more accurately I am strongly against selling (and therefore devaluing for non paying players) in-game achievement and progression. However, I have some ideas that I would love to implement and I can't justify paying for more than 4 servers without help. So I am just putting the option out there in case people would like to help me expand it. I have done my best to come up with ideas for tier rewards that don't devalue the work of those who aren't patrons, and instead actually contribute to their experience.

The  idea of only real money subscription paying players getting rewards such as rare strange bones and treasures every month, with the design feature of larger subscriptions  gaining larger rewards in your future planning makes me want to cease playing on your server, right now.

 

The timing of your Patreon page is unfortunate. Today I logged in to find the results of the restored data base loss . It is good to offer replacement items. We lost a fully built knarr. However,  I think it would be much better to demonstrate sound data management on the four servers you are already managing before trying to find ways to host even more servers.

I simply don't have spare money to pay cash for games at the moment (my WO toon languishes unpremmed for a while now) so I wouldn't be paying real money, BUT I can see how I benefit from other people patronizing this.  

 

I, too, am made a little uncomfortable at some of the rewards for payment.  I would be more comfortable if payment attracted cosmetic rewards (skins, decorations, etc).  When the reward is content, there is a bit of a balancing of conflicts - not wanting to make it "pay to advance" but also being mindful of how people who pay real money would feel about how non-payers might benefit without contributing their "fare share".   I wouldn't want to work it out.  Whatever; the basic fact is that while Kiama is paying for the servers and I am not, I have zero right to expect a say in how Kiama administers or manages them (in reality, I can hardly believe how MUCH of my opinionating Kiama tolerates). I am open about what I wouldn't use (or even what I wouldn't like) but being able to voice my opinion is the limit of any right I might have.  At the moment, though, the "base" free experience is great so if others are offered other stuff over and above that in exchange for material support, that has no effect at all on my experience.  It isn't a zero sum.  As long as my experience is great, why would I care if someone else's is more great?  I don't see how that hurts me.

 

I think the whole Patreon thing got started with Kiama working out how to better safeguard the servers, and what with a huge imagination and everything it just ballooned from there.

 

I do think the implied criticism of data management a bit unjustified.  Kiama implemented daily back ups.  It would seem that the paid host let Kiama down in that regard, so maybe it is they who should demonstrate better data management before asking for payment.  However, for what seems to have been a fairly critical failure, it has been for the most part resolved, with a commitment from our host to replace anything missing.  

 

As to only subscribers getting rare strange bones and such, we already know that this isn't the case.

 

I have no complaints, and can only be grateful to Kiama for a wonderful experience and a dedication to providing it.

I understand some people are going to feel that one of my host's two backup systems failing is my fault but in our case it turned out to be irrelevant. Because we needed the other back up system anyway. The user run backup system only backs up 5 days back. It turned out that the item database was corrupt all the way back to October 22nd and we just didn't notice. We therefore needed the host to provide us with their backend backup system which goes back 14 days, which was thankfully enough. On top of that I have agreed to manually stop and download the whole cluster occasionally, which is indeed what led to me offering ways for people to support me spending more time on the cluster. And I was able to successfully integrate your current skills with your past items, which is more than any backup system can do as it required knowledge of the database and how to correct the inventory ids.

 

I'm interested that you consider me to be providing material support Lowkey - if you read the rewards you see I am only providing 1 thing directly for payers: rarity. The other things are available for everyone rather than just the payer. You may be misreading the rewards, but I also realise I wrote one of them badly - I should also have made clearer in the pirate tier that they wouldn't be the owner of the rowboat, they would only have access to it as a container for their strange bones, which only provide rarity. I also originally had an idea for providing a private island as the top tier but removed that last night as it just didn't fit my philosophy.

 

If you consider rarity to be too much to give away for patrons, fair enough - it just seemed a reasonable balance to me.

The "material support" I mentioned was the patronage of players, for which they receive rewards.  The bit that made me a little uncomfortable (and I stress a little) was the private island thing, so that is moot anyway.

 

I am on the fence whether rarity counts as "advancement" but since rarity is amped up on these servers anyway (and non-paying players can get strange bones other ways anyway)  I don't think it matters, and again what other people get in addition doesn't subtract from experience in anyway so I really see it as no-harm, no foul.

As I announced on the 30th (on discord), now that we have successfully recovered Stormfall, I am celebrating by offering a rare Coin of Lost Memories and a rare Bone of Lost Memories to anyone who wants. For this month's Stormguard choices, you will get to have input in the design of the Haven, when it is added to our cluster. The Haven is what I have set as the £15 goal for Patreon (I will add it when a total of £15 is donated by Patreons each month) :

 

"The Haven will be a convenient non-nomadic option for those who otherwise enjoy our server settings but want to stay in one place. It will be possible to travel to the Haven from Stormfall, but it will not be possible to return to Stormfall. Even those who do enjoy the nomadic life may eventually appreciate the option of retreating there: you can think of the Haven as a kind of afterlife for your character to go to when they tire of endlessly running from the Storm; the final destination of your adventure. It will have all resource types and passive income."

 

In other words, you are helping me design our version of Heaven this month. You will both vote on which map shape to use, and which resources will be more frequent. As I have stated, it will have all resources, but for each vote a given resource receives, that resource will be made 100% more common relative to other resources of the same type (additive not multiplicative, so votes will stack but won't compound). Resources include trees, bushes, ores, general terrain (dirt, sand, tundra, marsh), and resource terrain (clay, peat, tar, moss). Resources which spawn naturally like Reed should probably not be voted on.

 

So choose any resource, and choose one of the following map designs :

Now that we have reached £10 in pledges a month, I will manually download the entire cluster every 2 weeks. Please note that this is on top of two other daily backup systems run by my host.
