Steam Linux version: NullPointerException crash after loading screen

The launcher starts up OK, and I can type in a username and press "Play". The full-screen loading screen shows up, connects, and shows the "Welcome back, <username>!" message for a split second before crashing. I get the client crash window with the red border, and the following log:

 

Unexpected crash while playing The error was: <null>

It's possible you might figure out what's wrong from the log file below, but if you can't, post the full log on the wurm online forums, and someone else might be able to help you.

"TestUsername" in the above log was just something I put in for testing - I get the same crash when trying with an existing user.

 

Also, clicking either of the cog wheel/settings icons in the launcher doesn't open up any other windows, but causes the launcher to freeze.

 

I'm running Steam in Flatpak on Void Linux, with the amdgpu open-source graphics driver from AMD. It's the native version of the game, i.e. without any Proton compatibility mode. I haven't run Wurm Online on this system before, but I love this game and would love to be able to play it on my modern desktop and bringing some friends along!

 

I couldn't find any Linux-related posts about NullPointException crashes - but I might've missed it - so I thought it worth posting. Does anyone have any advice? Any other information I can gather?

It seems to be crashing when compiling the ambient occlusion shader, likely in combination with that specific Mesa driver version... turning it off in the settings should do as a workaround.

 

As for the settings window not opening, you can also edit the config directly in:

/data/USERNAME/steam-library/steamapps/common/Wurm Online/gamedata/configs/default/gamesettings.txt

Setting "ao_level=0" might fix things.

This fixed my issue running Swaywm on VoidLinux.  Was having to use Legacy renderer otherwise was getting a white screen on login.

Setting ambient occlusion off fixed this.
