Reduce/change the RNG on horse traits

Recommended Posts

As it is, horse traits are determined by a rng roll for horses/hell horses (but not for other ridable mobs including unicorns, they have 100% uptime) that's pretty easy to get around (changing inventory weight instantly rerolls traits, so carrying 100 iron coins in a satchel and just dropping one if you're going slow for a speed boost). While being easy to get around/exploit/whatever you wanna call it, it also leads to some weird issues, such as a barded horse being leagues slower than a barded hellhorse, because the traits being on/off can be the difference between 15km/h and 33km/h while barded, or catching someone/getting away being determined by who wins the rng lottery, or who has the most iron coins in a satchel, or a fo priest leading 4 barded hellhorses being able to enter and leave fights at will due to the enemy having to get 5 horses hellhorses down to about 50% health to even think of catching them on a barded backup or running naked on a road. The disparity between horses and hell horses/unicorns is pretty extreme due to the traits flipping on and off, and imho isn't necessary as hell horses get a boost to speed+carry weight+extra attacks as it is.

Suggestions are

1. Make the speed bonuses from traits always on for all mounts, so like a normal horse goes 18km, a lightning fast horse always goes 21.6km instead of a roll for the trait being on alternating it between 18km and 21.6km, reduce the bonus if it's an issue with all of them always being on.

2. Reduce the difficulty of the check so that traits are on more frequently and bad luck with traits is much less frequent

3. Make tamed horses have a boost to this check, so that a tamed horse will have its traits on much more frequently than normal, but untamed horses work as they currently do

4. Reduce the speed penalty from bardings, but instead have them cap the max speed, so that hellhorses/rare+ gear don't have so much of an advantage over normal horses/normal gear, and that barded normal horses aren't absurdly slow to the point that you can often walk faster than them.

This one is neat but will mess with anyone who wants to bring a pet along.

Just stop with the terrible RNG when it comes to horse traits. It has no reason to exist.

Just have it always on.

Horses are already dirt cheap. After this...what will be a price? 2c per 5 speed horse?

I'm super conflicted on 1

Like, on one side it's SUPER frustrating to have your horse go from 36km/h to 24km/h at random, but on the other hand if horses were consistent on their speed and faster than others, it would make catching people out in pvp extremely difficult and honestly, kind of binary.

Hell horses/uni's don't really care about the trait check since they succeed them constantly, but horses have an extremely variable speed, which puts some risk on you even if your horse goes 40km/h.

For similar reasons, i'm sort of against 2- but i think 3 would be a great change, as taming a horse is already a risky deal. Likewise, i like 4 too.

If I had to change horses, i'd honestly give them stats that you can see and breed with, as well as a 'stamina' gauge that determines how fast they can go at a certain time (and only have traits turn on/off at a certain stamina percentage), which refills by going under a certain speed. This would add a little skill expression to riding horses, and allow some diversification.

For example, instead of blatant +speed horses, you could have stats that impact how much health a horse has, how much stamina they have, their maximum stamina, and other factors (CR, etc). Then, you could have traits that impact things such as their base speed, their minimum speed when out of stamina, their stamina regen rate and have some "positive but also negative" traits such as the ability to have a massive burst in speed at the cost of stamina, or overall slower stamina drain but slightly less max speed.
But that's closer to an AH rework than a stopgap fix to make horses less annoying rn.

there is nothing in this suggestion that would effect breeding difficulty so i fail to see how price would be a factor let alone the fact that market prices should have 0 impact on game suggestions

This should no longer be possible.
