Posted September 12, 2020 Came back to wurm after a break (about a year) and came back to a very empty low population xanadu. I'm not sure what has happened. Did wurmians stop playing all together? My very active alliance is almost obsolete. I keep hearing that players went to the steam servers. I'm still a little confused in that area and how that happened. Is it a good idea to make seperate servers? Why divide the community even more. We already had separate islands (servers) and now it's far more apart. What's left of my alliance is not happy about fellow players they played with for a long time just up and out to the northern servers. Why divide the community even more. The steam servers are entirely separate from the other ones, so everyone is starting from square one. There's not really anything else to say other than that, since there isn't a good way to bridge people that have months or years worth of progress into a server full of people that are struggling to make small barrels, hence the separation. Unfortunately, it's sort of a necessity to make sure that new players don't feel completely useless next to players that have time put in, otherwise the disparity between the two would be too great and it wouldn't lead to a good experience for incoming players from the steam launch. That being said, there's also nothing wrong with people migrating to the more populated servers due to people taking extended breaks from the game. New server launches always bring in a burst of new revenue. New Subs, New Deeds, New Silver purchased. This keeps the game alive for another couple years. Not launching the new servers is a great way to keep the community together in a coffin. I say it semi jokingly, but it is the reality. Posted September 12, 2020 (edited) Actually, it was Wurm Unlimited that started a spiral to the lowest Wurm population in 10 years. Already in the beginning of this year, Xanadu population was so low that you could log in and find just 50 players online. The Steam launch has in contrast brought player concurrency to record highs and then some. There is another thread on the forum that discusses whether this has dimished the old servers. Posted September 12, 2020 Also, just to clarify, though it's common for some players to refer to the new set of Northern Freedom Isles servers as 'Steam servers', in reality they're not. Any player can create a new character to play on one of the newer servers whether they're using the new Steam client or not. It's just that once you create a character using the Steam client, that character can only be played with the Steam client. Likewise, creating a character under the traditional standalone client means that character can only be played with the traditional standalone client. I believe the confusion of 'steam servers' came about because the opening of the new set of Northern Freedom Isles servers coincided with the release of the Steam client, but they're in no way tied to it (or vice-versa). 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
