Population Data So Far

Recommended Posts

Well, I do not see that Wurm is losing players at the moment. The figures from https://jenn001.game.wurmonline.com/mrtg/weeklylogins.html   are looking stable since months which is even unusual for the summer season .

Edit: This may have many reasons, and it is not that all is in order. Maybe the pandemic with massive job losses, lockdowns, and restrictions on culture and outdoor activities is contributing. Still we have the high and unpleasant churn rate of new players.

Btw. the steam figures Sindusk et alii boast with seem irreliable to me as well. After the steam launch, there have been in excess of 3000 logins at peak hours for weeks, and it is hard to believe that only one third of them went through steam accounts when before peaks in excess of 500 were mainly due to events where all alt accounts were mobilized. I do not know their methods, and trust valve even less than CC/GC.

I think Archaed has a point in criticizing all the doomsaying and wailing. Nevertheless, Etherdrifter did a good job collecting the data. Btw. it is not rocket science at all to set up a script and get them. I do not know how Etherdrifter does it, but  (an idea I had and shortly tried while reading here)  setting up a cron job every hour or in even smaller intervals catching e.g. data from https://jenn001.game.wurmonline.com/battles/stats.html   is easy:

wget https://jenn001.game.wurmonline.com/battles/stats.html ;    grep '[0-9]\/[0-9]' stats.html | cut -d'>' -f2| cut -d'/' -f1 > stats.`date -u +%d%m%H%M` ; rm stats.html`  would give you a newline separated list per server of all players logged in at the time, ready to feed a spreadsheet or small database. I welcome the relative openness of Wurm under this respect.

I agree with you completely in that breakdown, and you are correct, lack of updates is a sore issue in this community both from a player perspective, and a business perspective.

What I am calling out is the idea that this whole "service" is in some way altruistic and not self serving.

I don't want the game to go the path of so many others in the past. I don't want to see the community slowly fizzle out and Wurm Online end up abandoned. This game has been around for so long and I want to see it continue since it's been so enjoyable for me in the past 5 years since I started playing. Others have played for a decade or more.

There's so many lessons capable of being learned from other successful games out there with successful business models. I'd like to see Wurm Online adapt to the current gaming market, and others here are suggesting the same.

At the end of the day, a forum is for discussion about topics. A topic was presented, and people are discussing it. I don't agree with everything others have said, but I'm not so vain as to call them self-serving because of their interpretation of the data. If you'd like to disagree with their interpretation, I think you should use counterpoints to the data or logic against their statements. You shouldn't attack the person who's presenting their viewpoint.

Why would anyone want to waste the time cataloging the flow and user base if they didn't want to help express just how bad off Wurm is right now.   MMOs live and die because of their population numbers.  It is the core reason behind the success of some, and the death of many others.  Wurm is in a desperate state.  Most MMOs would look at these numbers as a good excuse to cut losses, or go into maintenance mode.  It's important to listen to your players, and respond accordingly.  Some have managed to escape the inevitable fall into failure by being honest, apologize, and show they're trying to be better for the community of their game.  It's not wrong to point out weaknesses, and highlight just how dire things are.  There's nothing to gain for pointing them out, it would be much easier to just leave the game and not look back.  Those who stay here and try to express their concerns and disappointments are people that still want Wurm to improve, people who still care and see something that can still be saved.  It's why I bother to stick around myself.  I love this game, and I want it to be better.  A YouTube channel I highly recommend is 'death of a game' because whenever they talk about the failure of certain MMOs, they show the timeline, the actions, and the decline of the MMO.  A part of me fears that I'll one day see Wurm Online as their next topic.

Well folks, its that time again, and likely to be the last time in a while (moving for a new job and I'll be leaving a lot of equipment behind).

First, the star of the show, the data!

Let's begin with the obvious; the Friendship Bay Summer Impalong was running between July 20th - 25th; which gives reasonable grounds to argue that (for the old cluster) the population was somewhat inflated between these dates.  I've not really got enough data on impalongs to figure out if they have a statistical impact on the monthly summary.

That being said; the old cluster's population is up by 2%, not too notable a gain (5 extra players on average per day), but still a gain.  Looking at the breakdown of the data, the week before, and during, the impalong are primarily responsible here (up from 198 to 220 which is a sharp leap for the old cluster!).  This might have been people transporting alts for sermoning, or it might have been new players travelling to the event, or returning players getting things imped up and socialising.  Nailing down the exact cause is difficult, but one cannot argue with the data and I think the old cluster has stabilised into a regular heartbeat with upturns for events and downturns elsewhere.  At this point, no lasting improvement has been seen, but no significant decline; one feels this is about as good as the old cluster is likely to get (and after looking at the data for almost a year, it is certainly suggesting it).

The new cluster is a rather different story, again the population has resumed its drop, though here we must again consider the impalong (people might have been playing their old toons, which would explain some of this drop); though, looking at last months total average population (501.2417) vs this months (480.6772) then we can see that there has still been a decline in overall average players online which seems to suggest that there have been some losses in one of the clusters.

Earlier this month, I also took a look at medians, and those lined up reasonably well with the means, so I am now reasonably certain that this data is an accurate representation of the average number of players online at a given time, at least on a monthly scale (dragons and server shutdowns are not having too much of an impact).

More importantly, is this data really an accurate representation of wurm's population?  Well, every player logged over the month could be a different player (extremely unlikely), or it could be they are all the same player (also extremely unlikely); we can be certain that this number if inflated by alts (on the old cluster, by a multiple of about 2 according to the priests and alt survey, though this was only moderately reliable and should be taken with a grain of salt).  It certainly gives an indication of how the population is moving; if the population of the game rose or dropped significantly, we would likely see a very noticeable change in population values.  For example, one can definitely infer a mass exodus from the new cluster after the steam launch (expected and backed up by steam player figures) but one would be harder pressed to infer a mass exodus from the old cluster.

Alright, now for the bit that is pure opinion (and given that I won't be around much after this, I can get some things out in the clear), so feel free to ignore this part if you want to stick to only the facts.

Wurm is in decline, it has been for years, and the naysayers are just burying their heads in the sand.  The dev team has become unusually quiet, and given that, even when it was under the normally loquacious retrograde, communication ground to a halt, one can perhaps assume that this isn't entirely their choice.  The evidence suggests that the big content updates for this year haven't had the impacted hoped for, and this isn't entirely the developer's fault:- it is VERY hard to predict how well a change will go down, especially overhauling a system.  It wasn't helped by ignoring community feedback on the feature, but then we've often accused them of kneejerking poorly thought out changes into the game.

Looking at the amount of RNG added recently, one wonders if development direction is really being guided by the same vision as it was a few years ago.  To put it bluntly; wurm is now owned by a gambling company, and one should view its intentions in much the same way.

In essence, wurm is now a game about hope.  One hopes that the developers are working on solutions to the problems created, and that the game is still more of a passion project as it is a cash cow to be milked till it runs dry.  We hope things will get better, an that our world won't be left an empty ghost town, with nothing but paved spots marking projects invested with love.  There is no evidence to support this, one must go entirely upon hope.  Let us talk of another game of hope: red or black, where will the ball land ladies and gents, and where are you going to put your money?

Well, I have been away for a while so I am one of the 5 average players back on the old cluster - and I never went to the impalong.  So there's that.

I only really scanned the first part, so have no insight to add there (probably wouldn't have had anything if I did read it in depth).  The second part, however, is I think spot on the money.  I only found Wurm a year and a half ago, but the contrast between then and now is dramatic. "Unusually quiet" is putting it mildly.

Etherdrifter has always had an unusual gift for academically understating things. I think it's due to his diplomatic background to not exaggerate but sometimes he puts a smile on my face when I read his stuff. He reminds me of that David Eddings character that once called a giant storm that nearly leveled a capital "a mild breeze".

And the data is well...nothing new under the sun (unfortunately).

Ok, thanks for the data. The opinion uttered is no surprise, while no "free fall" or imminent death anymore, at least "in decline".

Of the summer seasons in Wurm I experienced (and judging from yoy population course earlier as documented in some forum posts in the past) this summer is fairly uncommon in terms of population seems not to have shrunk significantly in spring and summer as in the years before. This is also reflected in the weekly login mrtg statistics. Insofar, Wurm participation appears unusually stable for a summer season.

Much as i dislike saying so, the problems with wurm population are partly our fault. we have a lot of players cr*ping all over the Developers work on a regular basis, i wouldn't want to code if that was happening without massive support from the rest of the community.

Ya i get it, buggy updates and the whatnot: Wurm Population isnt large enough to be using the test server for massive updates. And the Developers only know what's reported to them in the forums. Ya i get there are some 'bugs' that have been there for years, there could be a whole host of reasons why they are there still.

The point is that communication is necessary for survival, both between us and the devs, and between our community and the rest of the gaming world. we all need to be a bit more supportive of the Developers, GM's and CM's

Yes and no.

The reality is it's not the first time an update has led to huge disappointment amongst the wurm community, which left many people wondering "Why did we need this update when there are more critical things to be solved?"

Mind you the AH update launched on the 26th of May and it's still in a broken state 37 days later with breeding 4 drafters + 4 drafters = Misc/combat foals.  Donkeys are spawning in huge numbers on servers in ridiculous numbers and I suspect they are overriding other spawns at this point. People also got upset about the cart/wagon speed nerf, people are upset that they feel the AH update reset their herds of animals and the last post made by a dev drily stated "we're working on it"....

The combat update didn't kick up a stir, most people (I included) felt it was mostly just a makeover not an update. Some UI fixes but it didn't actually feel like an upgrade. The combat system is the same.

The rune/imbue update was a nerf that made it pointless to use potions at high skills, leaving those players that spent tens of silvers on imbues with lost money.

Wurmians are ... a special breed. Yes there are toxic players, most evidently in Gchat, and I won't delve into that. But at the same time, this is not the first time the community was disappointed in how things are handled. It's become a pattern and that's the problem. It's really not ok to pay money for a service (since Wurm is a subscription) and not having communication with your customers. I probably sound like a Karen right now, but meh, it is what it is.

And yes, lack of communication at this point is probably the biggest issue Wurm is facing, the 2nd is lack of significant development due to the owners refusing to hire full time devs to add content/ fix stuff. You can only go so far with a volunteer staff. What happens when those volunteers quit?

All these thing subtly impact population. Probably the vets are more hardcore, inured or simply too addicted / invested to Wurm to quit, but I can't see new people seeing this stuff (or lack of stuff)  and wanting to stay.

The AH update really affects everyone, it's not something like a forestry update which would only affect harvesters/ gatherers, it's a big thing and it's a bitter taste now.

Wonder what happened on 7/18 and 7/31 on the old cluster that caused it to spike so high.

That was my first thought, but I don't see any old cluster slayings on 7/18 via Niarja. Is Niarja no longer accurately tracking public slayings?

Edit: Nevermind, I'm blind.

What's odd about that graphic is that old cluster remains with same numbers online on avrg.. while we all(?) know that we really lost 20-30-40% population who just left sfi to play on nfi.. maybe the end of rmt and last sold characters somewhat cover the loss of actual people and that appears to hold same login numbers on sfi(as new owners use them to do different kind of chores, etc)?

Market is pretty dead and gets worse on sfi.. simple services seem extinct lately.

Here's a new graph which is SFI only. NFI dominates the Y axis in the original, so having one dedicated to SFI helps show the variance over time.

250-280 avrg logins, maybe a bit more on average - seems stable, yet..

These are 'just' login checked every few on avrg 4 days, with some variation from what I see.. (same or better can be checked with what was suggested earlier with wget/awk/grep/cut.. whatever works for you to grab just numbers, but they are just total logins per hour/day/exact time when it's checked.. it's tracking what this thread seems to target, but ..

What's really interesting(and we can't track) is .. how many are unique, how long they play* individually or total on average, peak hours with most players online*(excluding or being aware of impalongs/rifts/slayings/and hunts or w/e event shenanigans affecting the numbers with mass use of alts), such data could help the dev/gm/mod team to plan events/actions and need for more people working on this .. or that..

That's really the sweet data we're lacking. Logins don't mean anything if people just login 5 alts for a sermon. That's still 1 player. Epic alone has about 20 alts out of a total pop of...40 ish people.

Market is non existent on epic even for the most basic of things. Want enchanted items ? Good luck no more priests. I'm really seeing history repeat itself from Epic to SFI and it's depressing beyond description. It's the same small chapters, it's a subtle phenomenon that happens in small steps, tiny drops lost here and there.

Something to keep in mind; the numbers logged are an UPPER LIMIT to the number of players online at a time; the real number is likely to be much lower (around half on the old cluster if we take a conservative estimate based on the survey I ran a while back, though that survey was far from ideal).

Your actual player population online on average is more realistically somewhere between 100 and 150 (100 being half, 150 being a GENEROUS extrapolation).

I guess I don't understand this statement. When I log into the game on Harmony I always see 85-110+ players on Harmony alone, With more then that online on Cad as well, with 450 - 700 online in all of Wurm. That is from the log in message. So how are your numbers showing only 25% of what the game shows when logging in? I also have 100+ people on my friends list and upwards of 35 of them are online at any given time. Maybe I just have active people on my friends list, but there are also many who have not logged into the game in a very long time.

As a side note, I've seen 10 people return in the month of July to NFI that had left and have now returned, I know others have said that they have people they know who have come back as well. I have also interacted with 2 brand new players myself in the last 3 days. Sadly I know of many players that have also left / are leaving because of the lack of communication from the dev team and lack of any kind of roadmap showing bug fixes and the such. It is hard to expect people to keep shelling out hard earned cash for something that appears to have no clear direction.

It's hard to get excited and interested in a product when (it appears) the owner and developers of said product are not excited and interested either. My desire to login has certainly started to diminish, especially now that I am looking at the brutal 55+ AH grind for decent livestock. I would think I'm just burned out, but I'm having a blast on WU servers which remind me to WO prior to NFI launch (note: My pre-steam experience centers around Havens on Indy which was "alive" and always active). I'm seriously considering  letting my Deli and Harmony toons sleep until the deed upkeep runs out and calling it quits.

Actually, this is spot on. yes, there are some monthly costs associated with running an online game, however once a company is in the positive, it becomes a 'service'.

now mind you i wasn't saying it was ALL on us, just partly. This is a player driven game, the big question is 'How much?'

if the answer is 'completely' then there are a couple of assumptions we can make:

  1. CCAB wants us to 'police our own' so to speak. I mean, its our community, so its our problem.
  2. CCAB has a non interference policy. unless its game mechanics related, they don't bother.

If you are wondering why i inferred this, well the 'game rules' are in the forums, not in game. and some of the rules can be broken with current mechanics. Developers may be busy, but why are they leaving the 'policing' up to us?

I agree that the recent communication curfew is disquieting, and likely to frustrate players to the extent that they eventually leave. Btw., I am neither sure about the "conclusions from the survey" nor about the numbers of alts logging in daily. With me, it largely depends whether I log any of my alts, which one, and how long. Many parts of the game I play alone with one character, some with two, and few with all my subbed characters. Most I know with subbed alts act likewise. And I do not consider alts "cheesing" or else in any way wrong.

And besides that, it has been the same for years that "population logged in at one time" comprised of "main" and "alt" characters. The maxima during public slayings of course reflects a high share of alts. But I counted 104 slayers with 222 characters in local during last slaying. So even there the "main" to "alt" ration was not significantly over 1:1 if at all.

Is that sarcasm, or you really believe devs will listen to the community and do any update or fix, quality-of-life related?

What? We haven't had a decent update in how long? We got told updates are going to slow down to monthly and mostly be bug fixes. We get promised things one after the other and then told "Oh we just slightly mentioned that." Also we have ABSOLUTE ZERO COMMUNICATION WITH THE DEVELOPERS. Do you like putting your money in the toilet and watching it flush down the drain? Most people would enjoy updates. "Hey here are some bug fixes but we are working on this by doing that." The fact that they trashed AH and pissed off most of the community because all their animals were worthless. People dont want to pay for a game that doesn't release new things constantly. Watch population and big updates. Everyone wants to try out the new thing and then it fizzles out. Just like new games hitting the market. No updates, no population.

On another note, are there even any paid devs anymore?

and that's what i mean about attacking Developers. Not one of us actually know whats going on with CCAB, the devs, or how many 'actual' players in game there are, the LEAST you could do is not blow up at them.
