WoW is not a game you play 10 years

Thanks for the joke, nearly choked on my coffee

Wow is the type of game you play for over ten years as shown by the fact you have millions of players, yes some people take a break and return for the new content ( just like wurm players do ) new content comes quite often really, no other online game can compare to the success of wow in mmo history imo, it just had the right balance at the right time. But we shouldn't be comparing wurm to games like wow anyway completely different fish, might as well compare a board game with wurm.

Be interesting to know where the line is for wurm how low can the player base drop before the game loses money, I remember another game called Asherons call that ended up being pulled after the player base dropped below 200 people ( not all playing but active accounts), cant remember the figures off hand, but that was spread between 5/6 servers.

Another interesting stat would be unique wurm accounts, when I logged on last night on melody was 75 people on server but was that right? I think it was likely to be a good chunk of alts, so that 75 people could really make the server seem more dead as the alts don't tend to take part in chat or trade, would be super interesting to know how many "real" people are online, for example last night I was logged in on 3 accounts.

If someone wants to play boring (this is an opinion expressed by many people who tried it) just-kill-stuff-and-dress-up, instant gratification games for 10 years, it is their choice (and it is not like it is something bad, games are to have fun).

Wurm is unique because it gives such a "second life" or "alternate life" experience.

And this is what makes the world go around, there is no right or wrong choice, what you think is boring ( wow raids aren't to the people who enjoy them, its a puzzle to work out and how to complete them ) isn't boring to someone else.

I have heard people talk about wurm as like playing spread sheets, standing still "imping" watching a number go up after hours and hours of endless grinding that to me sounds like pure boring hell, I mean a standing joke is that wurm is the perfect game to play while watching / reading or playing something else. Someone else could love that game style and that's great.

But for me wurm has the best and second to none terraforming I have found in an online game, I have yet to find a game that can scratch that itch for me, I love how we can change the world around us and see it changed again and again and again, the servers are so full of history and that blows my mind. its a living world, I love to visit old places to see the wild lands return hiding the old deeds or seeing old areas with new blood refreshing the place with new ideas, wurm is a fantastic game for that.

But the problem isn't what I or you think its what the general gaming people think, I want to see a healthily wurm as I still think the devs have so much to offer, I understand this can be slow ( heard the code is a bit of a nightmare and the current devs have their work cut out for them, but the possibilities  are endless with this game, problem we have is how to keep players around long enough to see what the game has to offer, a very valid point made above is the concept of a server being dead, if you are in a tight knit little group the server can seem alive and well, a new player could log in see decaying deeds, empty deeds no one using chat and think darn missed the boat on this game and log never to try the game again. Just look at epic for that.

I would love to be a fly on the wall to understand fully what the devs and managers of the game think of the future after steam release and if things are trending as expected or not.

WTS - To the Devs, a Million dollar revolutionary ingame idea that would promote player retention. Multiple player run events, for other players to participate in. Entertaining Streams for those wishing to watch as well. Contact me via PM here or in game on this account if interested.

Thank you

Some mechanics for Triva would be great, there are quite a few people in Wurm played one of the games I was an admin for and remember my trivia, I held them for 13 years, could do the same in Wurm. 😉

I feel for the devs. Not only do they work with old code that may not be feature friendly, but they must walk the tight-rope between making the game too difficult/obtuse and too easy. Making the game too difficult (either mechanics or interface) may drive away the small player base it has, but making it easier puts it into the Minecraft sphere which has exponentially more competition and may also drive away existing players. In the end though, there *is* a small niche for the perma-terraforming, longer skill grind, and crafting crowd. I suspect that the devs may bring in more people by tweaking the PVP game to be much faster and more "throw away", but that code *cannot* creep into the PVE game without destroying what we already have.

I can't for the life of me figure out why the devs didn't think hard about how to implement a better situation on pvp server... They had a fresh start they could have capitalized greatly if they would have thought outside the box more. It's not to late to make some very drastic positive changes that would verywell bring a larger playeybase to defiance as well as an actual economy. Sad to see nearly 300 online to now 100 again, feels like deja vu 😔

As we can see....  Things are definitely changing for the old cluster; this month saw the average population rise to roughly 209.  The new cluster, meanwhile, is still dropping down to roughly 661.  The old cluster's peak population actually exceeded the new cluster's minimum population for the first time (server resets not being counted); a good sign for the old cluster, but a rather dire one of the new cluster.

Compared to last year's data (the old cluster having an average of 264 players at the time; down from the previous month of 275) we would expect a drop; to see that this isn't the case is definitely a good indicator.  Though, again, we must note that the overall health of the cluster is still rather poor, and there may well be external factors impacting this rise in numbers (the second lockdowns in the UK and in other countries across Europe).

Looking at a longer term data set we can track populations and growth of the old cluster.  The graph below lays this out and we can see that the old cluster's population was in freefall in September (the cluster was actively dying out) but this has recovered to some actual growth by November.  Over this period, the old cluster's rate of population change has been somewhat good.

Wurm-November-Stats.png

So where does this leave the "dying cluster" hypothesis?  Well, the evidence suggests that the old cluster is, at worst, stable for the moment.  It even indicates a period of growth where, last year, we saw a period of decline.  Though, here we must advise a pinch of salt be taken; this is the first month of growth the old cluster has seen, and it corresponds with a slowdown in the rate of decay of the new cluster.  This suggests a secondary influx of players, or a large returning crowd, possibly aided by the "Black Friday" deal.  Again, this may also be attributed to a secondary lockdown.  Thus, the "dying cluster" hypothesis hasn't been disproven; however, the "everything is fine" hypothesis does have some additional evidence contributing towards it.

We close with a final remark, one espousing my own point of view (and thus there is bias here); a strong advocate of the "everything is fine" hypothesis stated that November 2019 was the worst month for wurm's population; and yet we still find ourselves with a lower average than the one observed during that month (209 vs 264).  If, indeed, the old cluster is healthy, this "health" should be considered only in the context of "healthier than the dead and dying", not "healthy" as in "all is well".

I would like to clarify some reference points for the terms "Everything is fine"  and "The dying cluster". I see someone has been trained in statistics and studies here.

It would be nice to have operational terms. For ex. @Ekcin would have a different definition of a healthy cluster than me. My definition of a healthy server would mean at least " 100 unique players logging in monthly". I recall Epic back in 2013 had those numbers, for each Epic server.

My definition of "The dying cluster" would be less than 25 unique players per month on any server. Can Wurm survive on such numbers? I doubt it.

Seasonal events such as xmas gifts, always see an influx of premmed alts for 1 month so they can get xmas gifts but that number drops severely in Spring.

Can we please clarify our terms @Etherdrifter?

Since we're working with numbers, some thresholds would be ideal.

So new server comes out. People stay on old server, knowing it would drop in pop. Then some numbers drop on new server and all of sudden the sky is falling,. This is how the bitter vets on the old cluster are going to try and push merging the servers..   Like really who cares how many people are playing., Worry about you and your friends. Who cares what the other guy is doing. The sky has been falling since 2014. Really stupid drama thread

Ah, I see!

Well, the notion of "healthy" (as in, "everything is fine") for me would be an average monthly population of 500 players upon the cluster.  I'd constitute anything below 300 as "sickly" and anything below 200 as "dire"  Anything between 300 and 500 would be "uncertain".

My reasonining behind this is mostly based upon avoiding the "ghost town" mmorpg scenario; a population of around 500 players on the cluster would create enough "social neighbourhoods" to avoid this.

lets not forget vets coming over to new servers to blow out the economy with min-max poopsockin and pretty much making noobs pushed out already then going back to their hyper deeds on the old cluster once the deed is done.

Wurm has one of the nicest economy among all online games, I really see no major problems with it, and I don't accept bashing someone just because they are better at the game.

@Etherdrifterany news on the population data so far?

I expect the prem count rose a bit for the seasonal gift. Am curious how Wurm is doing.

Would be interesting. I have been seeing more online players after Christmas, on Xanadu. Might be a seasonal thing, some players returning from norhtern freedom. Or maybe players coming from Life is Feudal (same niche, however, it will shut down unfortunately).

Well, here is the data I have so far (so from last month and part of this month).  Prepping to move all my teaching online, so a little short of time for analysis this month!

The old cluster, as can be seen, has grown in average population from last month; which makes sense if you look at where the main spikes are (26th and 27th, the days most people are off).    Overall, the old cluster is still growing somewhat; though that is to be expected at this time of year: if we look at the data from last year (an average of 275, up by 4% from the previous month); one could attribute this growth to holiday periods, community events (such as impalongs) and possibly even christmas gifts.  However, this is only a hypothesis.

As to some reason for the old cluster's real longer term growth; it may well be players returning to the old cluster after having worn out their new start on the new cluster.  Though, there is no evidence to support this, though the rapid decline in the new cluster certainly suggests it.  Overall, there are no grounds to expect this growth to continue, though it is a welcome surprise since (according to my hypothesis) the low population should have caused a rapid acceleration in the decline of the old cluster.

We're still a lot worse off than this time last year, but it could be worse.

The new cluster...  Well to be blunt, it is in freefall; and has been for some time.  One gets the impression that the great gamble on the new cluster has somewhat failed; especially given that one would expect growth at this time!

These threads are cute. I've been playing for over 13 years now, and they pop up all the time. "The game is dying!" "How will it possibly survive!" - and yet, it does, and will continue to do so.

There were years when 200 players total (including alts, NOT unique) for SFI would have been a 'good' day in wurm.

"The Great gamble" - you make it sound like more than it is. Nothing has failed and to deem it as such after a TINY example of the life of Wurm, is doing the game, its loyal developers, and players, a disservice.

The server cluster "Epic" wants to know your location.

Jokes aside, as someone who played in the 2012-2018 era on Epic, it actually did die off. The fact that there's 20 players there still playing doesn't mean it's alive or healthy.

It's more about some people playing epic in a single-player experience mindset in an MMO. In 2014 at our worst of times we had at least 20 players online at any time on any epic server, for a total of around 80 players in the cluster. That on the worst of times. Usually we had 300 online at any moment, peaking to 900 in the good days or weekends.

The fact that the game can "survive" with a minimal playerbase of a few hundred players doesn't mean it will survive as a good game.

Too few players = less revenue = less money to develop, enhance, fix bugs, add content, market, etc for  Wurm.

Wurm might be able to "survive" on scraps, but it doesn't mean it will offer a quality experience.

So yes, the data shows a trend that Wurm is going downhill and I really don't understand the argument " Wurm has been dying for years and it's still here."....

Well yeah, with that logic, "I've been smoking and drinking for years, and I'm completely fine, they're not dangerous habits" .... until the day arrives when you count the cost.

The reason I keep bringing up Epic in these player population scenarios is that it's a case study on what happens when the population drops beyond a critical mass.

IT doesn't go back up! It's similar to a wound on a body. If it's severe enough, the body part won't heal, you'll lose it.

The reason player population is so imporant, is that if the same situation happens on SFI (it's happening), once the player count drops low enough, it won't pick up enough steam ( no pun intended) to get back up again.

New players get the "ghost town experience", think the game is dead and don't get into he game in the first place. Ask Epic how that experience works. There are more uniques alive on epic than there are playing people. Login as a new character and just wait a few minutes till a dragon pops up with a ketchup bottle ready to eat ya.

Because it was a gamble. I think we all know Wurm needed the revenue. The fact that WU got discontinued in support and updates is a huge red flag.

It's not a tiny example at all. Rather it is a chapter in the same pattern the devs have tried over the years to increase player population and in the long term (which is the spirit of Wurm itself, the long term) it didn't work.

You open up new servers, get a population spike then the player count drops again. Time and time again this happened.

Personally I feel grateful that Ether is providing us with actual facts and numbers and not speculation. That data is crucial to know what is happening to a game and what can be done to change it for the better.

As a sidenote, anyone remember when Blizzard stopped showing the number of actual subs because they dropped to such a low point, they wanted to hide their bad decisions from the players instead of making better changes?

Apples and Oranges

when Blizzard stop showing subs was when the take over happened not just because of sub loss IIRC, wasn't just about hiding numbers as they could have included the new china market ( was was complex mess due to local laws ) to boost how good the numbers were.

I mean they still had at lowest point Millions of subs.

A better example was a game called Asherons Call, skill based like wurm poorer crafting, no terraforming but better pvp and combat. dropped to sub 1k accounts between 7 servers iirc across mainly 2 time zones UK / USA

It struggled on for years with a handful of players nearly 20 years IIRC, before losing the battle,  the GHOST TOWN effect is very real and even going free to play didn't save it as new players left as fast as they came, it also have another problem same as wurm, the older players didn't want change, no change to adapt to a changing market mean a long slow death.

The game was good, but a good game doesn't mean it will last or thrive.

Wurm is a great game, but steam was rushed I know it seemed to take an age, but important things should have been done before steam, combat being the main one.

But it is what it is,  wurm dies I still Have WU to get my fix and I bet a mod would be released pretty fast adding everything from Online to Unlimited if the servers shut, so I am not worried.

I think something to consider as well for the thought (which I often have myself) that wurm has lasted all these years low pop and will be fine, is that the days of Rolf owning things and being content with making enough to keep it open and make a living is potentially a much different outlook from what a publicly traded company will want as a return on the purchase and for investors. It will be interesting to see how things play out.

I suspect I'd be doing the Wurm community a greater disservice by burying my head in the sand and singing "it's ok, the game still has a higher population than it did during its beta years".

The data on display here is only from the set I have pulled using a script; I have another 6 years of data showing steady decline pulled from my login logs.

Releasing Wurm on Steam was a gamble; you don't get a second steam player influx, so things had to be right.  It was a great gamble because it wagered a lot of development time and alienating existing players by adding new servers in the hopes of a large and stable influx of new players.  The data is currently demonstrating that said gamble has failed, much to the chagrin of the "everything is great" crowd.
