Posted August 4, 2020 since dual wielding is not viable because your second weapon is mostly decoration on a fight i thought it could use some changes to be really viable. For example a dual wielding skill, at the begining if you choose to dual wield you would get hit penalties on both weapons since you are unskilled on that style, while you progress on that combat mode that penalties would get reduced and at 100 maybe remove the penalty on main hand and keep a lower penalty on the offhand (since your right hand is still your main hand) and since it would be a hard skill to level(similar to agresive/normal/defensive fighting) it would take a lot on investment to get a decent level on that skill to be really efective, but rewarding when you reach a high level on that skill making it a viable alternative against staff/huge axe, of course thinking that the offhand attack speed would be increased to like half speed of that weapon being a mainhand so you could use any combination too for diferent speeds, or just suit yourself with a open plate helm, 2 axes and chainmail to be an angry viking
Posted August 4, 2020 I always thought that smaller versions of weapons should be more viable for dual wielding. so maybe some special offhand bonus for them or removing/reducing penalty for them. For example having longsword + shortsword shoudl be something in the midle beetween having two handed sword and having longsword + shield regarding ofensive and defensive capabilities. that would give those weapons more iniciative to use... Posted August 4, 2020 Should just be normal speed with no modifiers from skills added to the offhand attacks.
Posted August 6, 2020 I am terrible at combat mechanics. And I've been around the MMO block - I know that combat is a hot mess to keep balanced. I have absolutely no experience with which to suggest viable implementation options. Even so, I am 100% supportive of this idea. As long as dual wielding is possible in Wurm, dual wielding should be viable in Wurm. Even knowing that dual wielding is basically like fighting with half a weapon & one arm tied behind your back... I still dual wield anyway. First, because I am not a shield user. I tried using staves, and that was decent - but I'm still adjusting to the slow pace of Wurm combat, so I looked up the weapon set with the fasted action timer. Dual wield small axes. So that's what I'm doing, and loving it. Do I always have to drag creatures to the nearest guard tower for a bit of help? Yes. Am I able to solo creatures that are "at skill level" for my fighting and weapons? No. Will I continue to dual wield my awesome axes of doomity doom anyway? HECK YES. ... but it would be nice if it were given a little dev love.
