PvP based journal tiers

Recommended Posts

Hi!

Where are they?

I understand why you will feel tempted to reply: well because not everyone wants to pvp!.

That is a valid point but at the same time not everyone wants to clear 100 rifts or destroy x metal veins or grind 70 pray skill etc etc you get the ideea but they still did it because they wanted the rewards right?

Journal tiers are not mandatory to complete by anyone but i thing that adding some PvP based ones the pvp scene might get some player influx.

Sure there are risks:  if you make pvp journals means players will have control on both sides which means they could just exploit and give one another easy access to completing it but at the same time the benefits could be bringing alot of new players to a pvp setting.

Because one tier could look like: join a pmk or spread the influence of the kingdom you are a member of and hold it for 1-2 weeks, kill x ammount of enemy pets, retrieve x ammount of enemy horses etc

And in order to prevent all players  joining one place then in-house bang out the pvp journal you must set sort of an active condition for them to be active/completable like: Be 3 existing pmk's of 20+ members on the server or something like that.. is not 100% fail safe ppl could just spend a gold and use their alts to create pmk's to unlock the journal but then that costs money and they won't be able to log and defend all of  them the same time  right?

If even that does not work how about create even some community events in a pvp journal tier. Imagine if in one of the last ones the pvp'ers of a kingdom on Chaos would have to defend against an invasion from Epic of players with their epic skills fully transfered for the duration of the conflict? This way could bring some life into Epic too i bet they would love to come bang it out for a week or two.

If i come to think about it why not make the PvP journal be a struggle between Epic players vs Freedom players? That could revitalise the Epic cluster and bring to pvp the pve Freedomers that would want to try and complete  some of the pvp tiers?

I know many will just try it a bit and quit just as many will be reticent but then get the adrenaline rush of failing 11 times in a row to hit a player as oposed of failing 11times in a row to hit a troll and fall in love with it.

I am sure there are plenty of pvp players that completed the pve journal  not because of the love for grinding etc but because they wanted the rewards and in the process discovered that they like archeology and they can make some money off  etc. so i am positive some pve players that dont want to even think about pvp might discover they have a sweet tooth for it provided they were "pushed" towards trying it and i think pvp joural tiers might do just that.

Because Wurm is a sandbox i think that the pve should be the early to the mid game and that pvp should be the end-game and to achieve that you have to give a reason for people to try it.

-1 cuz in current wurm pvp quantities to do 100 rifts is 100 times faster than any pvp journal tier would ever be without exploiting your own alts at different kingdom...

I have played Wurm for many years now but have never really bothered with the journals except when I get a 'tick' by accident. I have not played PVP and have no wish to do so, however, I do see opportunities in what @Cipacadrinho says above:

a) Is it not simple balance if PVP players have the opportunities that PVE players have? I have never given it a thought that PVP does not appear to have the same journal opportunities for their specialist side of the game. If that can be said of me then perhaps some in the development team are thinking the same about the possibilities that such a journal could bring?

b) I wonder if many of the current PVP fraternity would not simply shrug at the prospect of a journal with their own tiers BUT I do think some people love the prospect of reaching challenging targets and a smaller sub-set of this group could be encouraged to try PVP simply for the challenge of getting pages completed. They may go into a PVP server and suddenly find out that they rather like this version of our game, make some 'friends' there and focus more into joining a village / kingdom and staying there for a while than simply ticking boxes in their journal.

c) I do not really agree with you about the idea of PVP being the end-game experience of Wurm but I do congratulate you on your attempt to encourage players to try something new!

if the reward is something also tailored to PvP and basically irrelevant to a PvE only character, why not. The draw of completionism or the inspiration of certain goals to think about is pretty harmless.

But if it's something like the +5 cast power that is basically mandatory for a high end priest, or another maximum sleep bonus hour, where people who have and always will have zero interest in PvP will be disadvantaged or "incomplete" for not taking the "bait" and latching onto it: hard pass.

Maybe another affinity token, as those were classically "PvP only", but affinities are also obtainable via grinding now, so strictly speaking, it's nothing PvE players would be gatekept out of.

I do want to comment on the apparent underlying premise here that PvP and PvE are somehow "parallel" worlds though. PvP is more like PvPvE in this game, PvE being a subset of it. A "reduced" version, so to say. (Except for some features that have been made PvE-Exclusive, but those are rare, relatively new, and afaik irrelevant to this discussion unless there was some goal about catseyes).

The point I'm making is that PvP players have - theoretically - just as much access to the current journal as PvE players, there's an asymmetry in design there as the same could not be said vice versa about a "PvP Journal".

Granted, some goals like the rifts are heavily tipped in favor of PvE-only servers, as they are rarely, if ever, being done on PvP servers from what I heard? Perhaps rather than devising a completely new journal for PvP, add some PvP "alternative goals" for things like 100 rifts to alleviate said practical discrepancy? 100 Rifts are terrible even in PvE, so that would surely gain some attraction aswell. And I'm sure there are other goals that could use a PvP alternative for similar reasons.
