Can't seem to run dedicated GPU with Wurm (or anything else)

Recommended Posts

So I bought a new (used) PC that has been cleaned out thoroughly and has had drivers installed. Everything seems to be fine except I cannot run anything using the dedicated GPU. I tried running Wurm to see how any fps I can get there and I just can't make it work.

What AMD Catalyst sees where it should  also see the dedicated GPU:

What my manager sees:

Basically I have a ghost Radeon HD 7670M. Please help?

did you (or somebody else) just installed every single AMD graphics drivers you can possibly find on google? as you clearly did not download them from ASUS website specific for your laptop model (serial number)

It is possible. I'll look into it. I'll try unistalling drivers I see there and AMD Catalyst, then get drivers from ASUS and reinstall AMD.

EDIT: Tried uninstalling the device - got a BSoD.

your best bet would be fresh reinstall of the windows and then install official drivers from asus. its hard to judge now, you might have cleaned the files, but the windows registry can be in a huge mess. multiple drivers installed etc.

Well for starters dont do a fresh install thats just silly and not needed
Read the following first all of it please before doing the steps

1. Your apu(your "cpu") has a Radeon HD 6520G equipped so its where that one comes from
2. Your 7600m is most likely the dedicated card if your laptop has one after all you have an apu

Best thing to do is the following
1. Go here https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html download this
2. Restart in save mode https://support.avira.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002870214-How-do-I-start-Windows-10-in-Safe-Mode-
3. Once in save mode start up DDU and make sure it shows the amd logo if not select it
4. Press clean install and restart
5. Windows should restart and fall back on default drivers go to device manager and check what you see if you see 2 graphics cards(the ones you listed above) go to step 6
6. Go to https://www.amd.com/en/support and dive down into the list to this section https://community.amd.com/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/2-2893158-143502/Screenshot_12.png From there start off with the bottom one(considering you dont have a set driver number on it)
7. Install and restart pc

If the dedicated gpu has gone missing then do not install catalyst or any amd drivers at all as that apu is designed to run with window's its default display drivers and will stop functioning properly when you install amd drivers as shown here at the bottom https://community.amd.com/docs/DOC-1312

So what i would like to see is the following

1. The laptop brand name(not just manufacturer but the model number)

2. If it does have a dedicated gpu that is not part of the apu(your pictures seem to suggest so but it might be because of faulty drivers) which the above should show you

I will second what Skatyna said about getting the drivers from the laptop manufacturer web site specifically.  I have run into issues with running newer versions of vid drivers that just didn't work right with older laptops and had to revert back to the last know tested driver supported by the laptop manufacturer.

I also agree with Wipeout that a fresh install of Windows isn't always needed and it burns a lot of time to do so, but after a number of steps are taken and if still banging your head on the wall, starting fresh with Windows, and then all the drivers/updates from manufacturer gives you a really solid foundation to work from.

I am not an AMD user, so have no real expert advice on them, but I do know that some of my laptops have had graphics settings within the laptop BIOS, which is usually reached by holding ESC or F2 or DEL or something (maybe a combo of them) immediately after pressing the power button on the machine.  Do a search on internet for your laptop to see what key(s).  In the BIOS it might have an enabling or disabling of graphics or some of it's features.

So before reading your answers I reinstalled Windows 10 after formatting all drives. The ASUS site only has drivers up to Windows 8.1 for this model. The model of the laptop is ASUS K53TK and it has a dedicated GPU (RADEON HD 7670m) along with the integrated GPU (RADEON HD 6520g). I used driver booster 7.3 to get drivers I needed. While installing drivers for my 6520g I got a BSoD. After reboot driver booster had the 6520g ticked off as up-to-date, but not my 7670m. On AMD's website under drivers section I can only find AMD Catalyst Software Suite and Radeon Software Crimson  Edition Beta, but I noticed that AMD Catalyst is already installed on my laptop. When I enter it and select Info it detects both my cards. Now what's left is to get my GPU to run with Java I guess.

EDIT: Why does it look like this? Shouldn't it show Radeon HD 7670m under "wysoka wydajność" (high efficiency)?

Okay so first dont use driver booster as nice as it might seem programs like that do more damage then good stick to manual updating of drivers(The amount of times at my past job where we had perfectly fine machines go to ###### because a customer had use a "easy driver update" program was far to high)

The asus website only shows bios updates anyway nothing related to your gpu or any other drivers so thats a no go anyway as for drivers took a bit of digging but here you go https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-hd/amd-radeon-hd-7000m-series/amd-radeon-hd-7670m

Install the ones for your version of windows 10 restart and have another look just be sure to completely clean with ddu before installing as amd does love to screw things up

As for switching and making the correct gpu do its thing there are 2 ways

1. Disable the apu's gpu in device manager
2. Follow this https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/dh-017 if the option shows up for you that is

Now there is 1 more way which might work but i have no way to confirm this works myself(dont have a amd laptop laying around at home :( )

1. Go to power options (right click the battery icon)
2. select your active plan and select change plan settings
3. select change advanced power settings
4. expand switchable dynamic graphics and change the following to this
On Battery: Maximize performance (Use dedicated GPU)
Plugged in: Maximize performance (Use dedicated GPU)
This should force it to use the dedicated gpu but it will drain your battery life like mental so maybe set on battery to use integrated

Also to note wurm now runs its own version of java so find the wurmlauncher.exe in your wurm folder and set that to high performance in that window if needed

I did everything as you said. After all when I expand switchable dynamic graphics under active power plan it doesn't even show an option to use dedicated GPU. It's like it's not even there.

EDIT: When I disable the 6520g and try to change settings under graphics settings for wurmlauncher.exe specifically it says "Windows basic renderer" under high performance GPU.

EDIT 2: I deinstalled drivers with DDU in safe mode and installed AMD Catalyst back but without Internet  connection. In device manager there were no GPU names next to the two positions. It just says "Basic Windows Renderer".

EDIT 3: Windows Update downloaded the drivers it saw fit and now we're back to point of entry.

EDIT 4 (decided to write it as a reply):

Tested everything with the use of a different game and system monitor from AMD. The dedicated GPU turned on and did its job.

The problem remaining is I cannot make it work in Java environment AND I cannot make it usable manually (as in select which program uses which GPU).

Remember that part as wurm now runs from the exe inside your wurm folder vs java environment

It's working!

All I had to do was to get into AMD Catalyst Control Center and under Games add settings for wurmlauncher64.exe (I reinstalled Wurm with the use of the Windows launcher). At the bottom there is "AMD Radeon Dual Graphics settings" and there I picked a premade profile (there are profiles for various games). I picked dishonored.exe. Then, I launched system monitor from AMD to see if the dedicated GPU works and launched Wurm. It's working.

Please close the thread and thank you for your help!
