Posted November 23, 2019 Hi there! I've played Wurm Online a few years back and now nostalgia hit me and i decided to BUY Wurm Unlimited. I always heard it was better and such. But the problem is that i can't run the game! Login screen seems ok, but when i log into a server, the game freezes and crashes on character creation! Is there any way you can help me, please? My specs: Windows 10 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Intel QuadCore i3-6100 3.70GHz

Posted November 24, 2019 (edited) Make sure that for now, you do not run =ANY= mods at first. Better to add those later once you are sure the base game runs fine. A few times, there have been issues connecting to steam WU servers if you are on any kind of dorm/work/military network that block certain connections. Let us know if that applies to you. Wurm apparently hates running fullscreen at a few specific resolutions. In the launcher (before logging in) go to Settings (gear icon) > Graphics and set it to Windows Resizeable 800x600. If that gets you logged in, come post back here and we will work from there. I think this maybe got fixed on WO but not WU ....? Make sure to try out multiple servers including some of the larger more stable servers, at least as a test. Offhand I would suggest testing on Otherlands or Sklotopolis, only because I am most familiar with those and am confident they are stable. It's possible a smaller server might have some particular issue, serverside mod, ping issue whatever that we can sort out IF we establish you play ok on "mainstream multiplayer servers". Never trust Windows Update to keep your graphical drivers updated. In some cases they instead focus on a "DirectX" friendly in-house Microsoft driver that do NOT always play well with OpenGL games like Wurm. Go here to the official NVidia site and get the Geforce driver from there and NOT from Windows Update. Sometimes highend or older "Workstation cards" designed for CAD and non gaming rendering, can have drivers that are more finicky -- but your GTX1050 is pretty mainstream gaming so that's not really an issue in your case. There used to occasionally be some issue with players not having some "redistributables" such as Microsoft Net and Visiual Studio C++ libraries. This is more likely to be an issue on a newer computer, as older computers that are used for games over long years gradually pick these up over time. See this thread and others like it. Win10 had issues with some, example: "thanks for the tip ,downloading the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update. works for me" The majority of people here are WO players, so there might actually be better advice sometimes for the steam version, on the Steam - WU subforums. Personally I would try posting in BOTH locations, to double your odds of a solution. There might have been a problem at one time with using certain "illegal" characters in a player name, I kind of forget the details now. Try a test character named something like KillMe (no unusual spaces or characters) just to see. Try also NOT using the same name you might have used before, something like TestMeBaby or something likely to never been picked before by anyone. Usually you can ignore (at least at first) any suggestions focusing on JAVA as WU has its own bundled java version and should not need any fiddling on your end. I would look at suggestions on changing anything related to Java ONLY after all else failed. Sometimes there have been particular Win10 updates and things that caused problems, especially if your system has some slight variation such as dual cards or dual monitors or 4K resolution. I am not too familiar with Win10 and won;t be the best help if that is the issue. In steam library also rightclick the Wurm Unlimited Shortcut > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files. There is a chance it simply got one corrupted file throwing everything off, and this should find and fix it. WU has not had all of the bugfixing updates and improvements of WO, so there may have been some known issue "fixed" on WO but never fixed on WU. If worst comes to worst, refund the game before your "two hours" of playtime passes just from attempted/failed logins and maybe try again after more solutions surface or new updates are added. Meantime we can keep trying for better solutions here. Also this possibly should be in WU tech help not the WO tech section. Sometimes tech savvy WU players and admins don't check the WO help areas as regularly. If you want, you can "REPORT" your own thread and ask a moderator to move the thread to WU Help -- I have used this option a lot and it seems to usually work. This would be the correct subforum for this discussion: Home >Wurm Unlimited>Technical Issues>Client Issues https://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/forum/270-client-issues/ Edited November 24, 2019 by Brash_Endeavors

Posted November 24, 2019 @Brash_Endeavors First of all, thank you so much for your complete helpfull comment! Quote Make sure that for now, you do not run =ANY= mods at first. Better to add those later once you are sure the base game runs fine. Was running some raw, vanilla servers yesterday, but the problem still persisted. Quote A few times, there have been issues connecting to steam WU servers if you are on any kind of dorm/work/military network that block certain connections. Let us know if that applies to you. Posted November 24, 2019 I tried downloading the WO just to check if it was the WU version that was bugged or something but the game crashes too. I login, and after that loading screen the window says <not responding> and then it closes. The process is still running on my task manager though. ... I just wanted to play some Wurm... Posted November 25, 2019 (edited) 1) Look for a file named hs_err_pid (followed by a long number) in the following locations: steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\WurmLauncher (I forget the folder path for WurmOnline version, but look there too) Post that entire hs_err_pid file here if you can find it, (both WU and WO if both exist) or I can give you a place on the internet to upload for free if you have troubles copy pasting. There is a "CODE" markup you can use that allows people to expand/close all the text, but its ok if you cannot figure that part out, just post it all. In a pinch you can also email it to me (just PM me for my email) and I can post it for you. 2) Look also for a file named "console.charactername.log" -- for instance mine is usually console.Brash.log, but you might have several with different character names. You might not see the extension .log depending on your computer settings so anything console.blahblahblah -- make sure it is the same date you had the crash. Again, post here via COPY PASTE, or upload the file, or email it to me for me to post (best to have as many eyes as possible looking for clues, especially @Samool who is now lead dev plus the expert on client crash issues -- but he has a lot on his plate so we all try to help him out there) edit: try also switching AUDIO to software mode, I am thinking I recall the game sometimes had issues with hardware mode in some configs. I didn't think it resulted in an actual crash to desktop, but don't remember for sure. Be aware that every time you crash, you may have to recheck all these settings again; I think it does NOT save settings if game crashes. Check task manager between each login attempt and force-close any running stuck copies of the launcher, in case that is an issue. Posted November 25, 2019 (edited) Quote ""Honestly, I think this one is the biggest problem. I already unnistalled DirectX and am currently installing NVidia Drivers"" Just as a by-the-way, you do not need to uninstall DirectX, just the Microsoft made video drivers from Windows Update that are geared mostly to DirectX, and neglect OpenGL. NVidia drivers will fully support both DirectX and OpenGL games. They are ALWAYS the best ones to use. You want drivers from NVidia and not drivers installed by Windows Update, at least for OpenGL games. DirectX games are in the majority, so you'll still want DirectX installed if you play a number of different games. Miocrosoft made DirectX, it's their baby. OpenGL however is an opensource system made by independents that is kind of a competitor to DirectX in some ways, so Microsoft is a little less than eager to fully support it as they prefer game developers to all use THEIR product instead (ie DirectX). It's not so much that they are deliberately sabotaging OpenGL games, so much as they don't make it a priority to support openGL, and often only support older OpenGL features. I didn't think it resulted in an actual crash to desktop, but don't remember for sure. Did this. Didn't quiet work. Thank you so much, for your effort! Posted November 26, 2019 (edited) Sometimes hs_err_pid file ends up on the desktop, so try also: Look in Windows Explorer for the DESKTOP subfolder and see if hs_err_pid may be there Try using the menubar SEARCH function to look for a file named hs_err_pid as it can sometyimes find it in hard to spot places. Other java games also use this error report format so you might have to weed through a few older crash reports from other games. Hopefully the console log you provided above will include some clues as well. I am stalling in case someone else has some good ideas. (I am also in the midst of preparations for moving across country and my attention gets very distracted at times; I have not forgotten you I am simply out of any good ideas for the moment and hoping someone else can think of anything.) Hopefully one of the WO or WU devs has an ideas, or someone else has some good ideas to suggest .... Edited November 26, 2019 by Brash_Endeavors

Posted November 26, 2019 (edited) I've been having some crashes recently, these may be wholly unconnected but thought I would share some things I have noticed. If using full-screen or windowed mode, try re-sizeable window. If using resizeable window, don't have it on maximize. My screen resolution is 1920 x 1080 - which has been mentioned on the forums as a problematic resolution for Wurm when running full screen mode, you could try changing your screen resolution if that helps. In the log on screen check the Profile settings is set to default. I have noticed that after a crash, the next time I log in, this profile settings box is blank - meaning it probably did not load a profile, and is trying to load a corrupt one. If I try to load the game when this box is blank it always crashes. As I say, may be unconnected with your issues, but these are the problems I have been having. Posted November 26, 2019 That's a good suggestion Muse, however he has a video of trying to launch HERE and it shows he is using the dropdown "Default" profile (not blank), and that screen resolution is already set to Windows Resizeable 800x600, so I think those areas are probably covered...
Posted November 26, 2019 Sorry for the oversight. It looks like your game gets to the point where it needs to write to your Event log. Here's an excerpt from my successful launch: Gui initialized Startup Phase - Preparing terrain... Startup Phase - Connecting .. Disabling Nagles Writing to C:\Users\USERNAME\wurm\players\Muse\logs\_Event.2019-11.txt Disabling Nagles Writing to C:\Users\USERNAME\wurm\players\Muse\logs\_Friends.2019-11.txt Writing to C:\Users\USERNAME\wurm\players\Muse\logs\Alliance.2019-11.txt Writing to C:\Users\USERNAME\wurm\players\Muse\logs\Village.2019-11.txt Writing to C:\Users\USERNAME\wurm\players\Muse\logs\CA_HELP.2019-11.txt Writing to C:\Users\USERNAME\wurm\players\Muse\logs\GL-Freedom.2019-11.txt Writing to C:\Users\USERNAME\wurm\players\Muse\logs\Freedom.2019-11.txt Writing to C:\Users\USERNAME\wurm\players\Muse\logs\Trade.2019-11.txt Login successful If the game disabled the Nagle's Algorithm ok, and is indeed bombing out as soon as it is trying to write to your PC, the first thing I would check is that is has permission to 'write' to the file. For example I would check the game is completely cleared with any any firewall or security software, or if there's anything else stopping it 'writing' to _Event.2019-11.txt I notice it seems to 'save' your settings out ok Being a noob I am not sure how the implications for writing (or appending an existing file) and saving (or creating a file) differ in this case. Posted November 26, 2019 Is there any chance the system is using the Intel GPU, instead of the Nvidia one? The log says Nvidia, but that may not be correct - make sure to switch it to Nvidia only while playing Wurm. Is it a laptop? If not, verify the cable connecting your monitor and the PC is going to the graphics card, not the motherboard (dedicated vs onboard graphics)

How can I check this? I'm actually dumb with hardware
Posted November 26, 2019 I don´t know how to switch it but i only have Intel GPU so I have to turn off some settings in the client before I can play.

Posted November 26, 2019 (edited) Oooh I did not even think of that!! I don;t use laptops much so always forget this one. Yes "switchable graphics" on a laptop is a very common issue. The problem is caused because the driver software thinks all Java programs are office apps, automatically switches to the battery saving intel graphics, and refuses to use the dedicated gaming card (the GTX1050) on java games. There is a setting in the Nvidia Control panel under 3D Settings where you can direct it to use the Geforce card anytime Wurm is launched, instead of the power saving Intel card. You can do this either "Globally" (ie use geForce for EVERYTHING but it uses up battery faster) or tell it to ONLY do this for the Wurm Launcher exe file. You might have to also set this for the java executable (javaw.exe or javaws.exe) in the java program folder, I am not sure how the current WO client works. I need to look up the exact file names and locations. If you have a way to go to NVidia control panel, 3D settings, Global, and tell it to ALWAYS use the dedicated gaming card (GTX1050), that should at least verify this is the issue while I track down maybe some screenshots of what to change (it unfortunately can change somewhat in different driver versions). You might also be able to set POWER USE to always use high performance mode instead of battery saving mode, but that might not be as reliable. I completely forgot to ask about a laptop with switchable graphics, this is a common issue. This article might explain some (different game but same issue): https://support.ubi.com/en-gb/faqs/000027100/Switching-to-the-laptop-s-dedicated-GPU/ I have not heard of this happening as often in the WU version however since WurmLauncher.exe is separate from the java executable javaws.exe that usually causes the mixup. Samool will know how it works these days... Sometimes you might also be able to right click the game shortcut on the desktop and find a mouse menu option to launch using the dedicated card GTX1050 -- I am not sure if both WU and WO offer this option. edit: this is an example of how it usually looks in NVidia Control Panel when it is set to ALWAYS use the high performance graphics card, the screen might vary a little with driver versions: this uses up battery power faster so you may want to instead go to the PROGRAM SETTINGS tab instead of the GLOBAL SETTINGS and set it to WurmLauncher.exe and / or javaws.exe that way it only switches to the GTX1050 while playing Wurm or running java applications. Posted November 26, 2019 I'm not on a laptop, i'm on a desktop. I don't know what i'm doing wrong but I don't find any "NVidia Control Panel" on my pc. The only thing I have NVidia-related is "GeForce Experience" but doesn't resemble that window. I tried to download it, but it says that it's not compatible with my GPU. Posted November 26, 2019 I read on other topics that the game is not really in good relations with the last NVidia Drivers. How do I rollback my drivers or what drivers should i use? Any help on the topic?
