Sound not playing on Ubuntu

I just solved a problem with installing Wurm on Ubuntu, but I think that this is unrelated, so I will post it here instead.
As in the title, that's basically it. The sound isn't playing. The settings are all good(It's using OpenAL, if that is relevant), there is just not sound. I can't tell that anything is wrong from the terminal window, but of course that's not everything and I may have missed something.

I just don't think I can deal with that epic crunchy dirt noise missing from my life! So It would be great if someone could help me out with this.

I am not familiar with running wurm on Ubuntu, but in the windows version some people need to switch audio to software mode as hardware mode might have some glitchiness, such as sound cutting out completely. So yes OpenAL might be the issue. Sometimes it is just a matter of finding drivers that are OpenAL friendly maybe.

What version of Ubuntu are you using? Try changing output device. Also check that WurmLauncher has volume in the sound settings. Could be as simple as that :)

Sorry for the late reply. I hope this can still get fixed.

 

This is my console log. I installed Ubuntu fairly recently, so It should be the latest version. That was running Hardware (OpenAL) sound settings. All my volume settings were default and not zero,and I can hear other app sounds through the same output device.

I basically just walked around in a cave with tons of things in it then went afk for a minute before killing the game and copying the log.

Is that your integrated motherboard video? Do you have another video card that is more powerful or this is your laptop's video card?

Have you tried changing the built-in audio settings in Ubuntu?  Mine is currently set to "Analog Stereo Duplex" (I'm a simple man), and I know if I change my settings to one of the "Surround Sound" settings  I can get similar errors.

Are you using OpenJDK/IcedTea?   I do not follow Linux issues very closely but I seem to recall hearing Icedtea doesn;t play well with Linux and Wurm.

I believe so, and I do have another GPU, but it seems to run the video fine (30-50 fps), and It shouldn't have too much of an impact on the audio, since I have a CPU for that. I find it odd that it just comes out with "Failed to start", then leaves it at that. There's probably something further up that might explain it.

Re:gpu If this is a laptop, with switchable graphics between an intel battery-saving mode and a dedicated gaming high performance mode, it could be that it is identifying Java as a non-gaming home/office type app and switching to low power/battery-saving mode. At kleast that is a periodic issue with windows/wurm/laptops. However you say the video is not really an issue, so we'll skip past that.

 

Are you using a USB headset that has its own embedded soundcard, and maybe has an older driver that is less openAL friendly? If so, do you have a pair of cheap earphones  or maybe even better, earbuds, you can test using the motherboard connections to see whether you at least get some sound ingame? That way you would at least be able to narrow the cause of the problem, and either find a better driver for the headset, or a different headset that plays well ith openAL.
