Vaelir's Deed.

Greetings Wurmians!

Apparently this news is a little late, oops! We’ve been pretty busy dealing with some rather unfortunate hardware issues, we’ll fill you in on that in this week's news, so let’s get on with it!

But first...

Patch Notes:

Spoiler

Changes and Additions

  • Journal Changes
    • The journal now has the main tutorial and a fishing tutorial which you can use at any time.
    • The First Steps = Replaced Find Route with Join Village on servers where highways are disabled.
    • A close tutorial button has been added for characters older than 6 months.
    • A quickbind page has been added to the tutorial.
    • A mouseover note has been added to the journal reward info as a reminder that the reward will be received on the cluster where the tier is completed.
    • New tiers have been added to the journal.
    • Priest tiers have been added to the journal.
  • New: 100 Forestry title added
  • New:  Priests of demigods can now create and continue their template god colossus.
  • Clarification: Frantic charge is intended to increase walking movement speed. It currently increases movement speed by 10% on foot. The change where it no longer affected mount speed did go into effect and was intentional.
  • Change: Fireheart – Reduced spell damage against non-player targets slightly. This reduction is more significant against less armoured targets (like cats and wolves), but has minimal effect on tougher creatures (like trolls).
  • Change: Adamantine runes of Jackal will now determine the color upon rune creation and show the rgb value in the rune examine message.
  • Change: Priests can now remove mine doors with a crowbar.
  • Change: Priests can now place mine doors.
  • Change: Wand of the Seas and Rod of Eruption usage instructions have been improved.
  • Change: Oakshell should apply its armour value over cloth and leather if active.
  • Change: Frantic Charge now grants up to 10% faster swing speed based on power.
  • Change: Find on Wurmpedia right click will now open Wurmpedia in an external browser window.
  • Change: Certain creatures can now be sacrificed outside missions:
    • Anaconda
    • Black Bear
    • Brown Bear
    • Black Wolf
    • Whale
    • Wild Cat
    • Cave Bug
    • Crab
    • Crocodile
    • Deer
    • Dolphin
    • Goblin
    • Hell Hound
    • Hell Scorpius
    • Lava Spider
    • Mountain Lion
    • Octopus
    • Pheasant
    • Large Rat
    • Scorpion
    • Seal
    • Spider
    • Tortoise
    • Troll

Bug Fixes:

  • Bugfix:  Fixed a few issues with priests and planning/building floors and walls.
  • Bugfix:  Fixed some text and spelling issues.
  • Bugfix:  You can no longer throw empty container slots.
  • Bugfix: Empty saddles can now be banked again.
  • Bugfix:  Mystery piles of animal extremities should no longer appear when traitors are killed.
  • Bugfix:  Fertile eggs in chicken coops will now be fertile egg instead of Egg, fertile causing hatched chicks to be named fertile the chicken.
  • Bugfix:  Fresh herbs properly lose their ‘fresh’ state when put into crates.
  • Bugfix:  Fixed a caged animal  issue which sometimes prevented server crossings.
  • Bugfix:  Fixed an issue which made journal tiers visible without properly being unlocked by the previous tier.
  • Bugfix:  Creature death notice will no longer appear where they were caged if they die on another server.
  • Bugfix:  Fixed an issue which caused  Paved with Stone journal reward to show complete but no title was rewarded.
  • PvP Bugfix:  Added a close tutorial button on pvp servers.
  • PvP Bugfix: Fixed an issue where new deeds would not be chained when placed until a new tower was built or the server was restarted.

Fishing changes:

  • Added lore action to rod/pole on boat, and rod/pole/spear/net on tile. Gives a little information on what might be found in areas.

  • Fishing Bugfix: Missing Fishing line, hook and bait text spam should be fixed.
  • Fishing Bugfix: Fishing tools should now indicate ‘fishing hook’ instead of just ‘hook’ so there is less confusion with the other metal hook used to make a toolbelt.

  • Bugfix:  Reach Meditation Path Level 9 wording in the journal has been corrected.
  • Bugfix:  The proper title will now be awarded for The Winding Road journal tier.

Independence issues.

The lag independence has been experiencing was identified as a failure on one of the drives on the server, which was causing major delays when reading from the database. Upon identifying this our server hero admin Keenan performed extended maintenance during which the databases were moved to another hardware setup. This is a temporary issue while we perform maintenance on the Independence hardware and some time in the near future we will be undergoing an extended downtime period for all servers to perform necessary system maintenance as well.

Alongside this we are also investigating the causes for the recent upturn in lag, this will take some time as we run profiling software on each server, identifying when it lags and why.

We know dealing with lag is a major pain so it’s our current priority to address and resolve as soon as possible, we do appreciate your patience with it and once we’re in the clear we’ll look at what forms of compensation might be worthwhile.

‘Tis the season!

Almanacs, examine, mouseovers, so much text to see if your tree or bush is ripe for the harvest, but what about the items? Coming very soon is a graphics update that displays fruit, berries and all those harvestable goodies directly on the tree. As you can see below, Saroman is always working hard on making Wurm look as alive as possible!

This is expected to go out in the next few days, so if you see a graphics pack update, that will be why!

Animation polishing

Samool has also been hard at work on polishing general animations from a first and third person perspective, including having the camera move with certain animations!

https://drive.google.com/file/d/19lduiQjq35duW40UAofd_4zjixt5a0kV/view?usp=sharing

Of course it will be a toggle though, motion sickness while playing is never fun.

HotA rework

The ongoing HotA rework testing is still available on text, we have several devs working with feedback to ensure that any system that comes achieves the goals we have and creates something engaging, be sure to grab a chum, buddy or comrade to check it out and leave any feedback!

That’s it from us this week, we’ll be hard at work addressing the hardware and lag issues and hopefully have some more info soon about the dates for the extended downtime. Until then though, keep on Wurming!

Retrograde & the Wurm team.

Whoa! That animation movement is terrible! I will certainly be grateful for the ability to toggle it off. Fruits and berries on trees and shrubs will be nice though.

Fabulous as always! I have to say I'm rather glad about the toggle, as someone who suffers motion sickness at the drop of a hat, but I'll certainly try it out!

Terrible is harsh, its your opinion though and that's fine. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say, I think it looks great. Fruit on trees is also superb. Nice job.

To clarify on this, and I plan on posting a full postmortem once I'm done:

The hardware that Independence once ran on has been replaced and a new drive installed with it's RAID1 restored. Since it's newer hardware now, the intention is to move Independence back and keep the somewhat older hardware in a fresh state for future emergencies. Along with the new hardware, I've updated the operating system and several other services.

We currently have a test server running on these updated systems and services, and so far it looks good. So Independence will be the first to run on the new system and the longer downtime Retrograde mentioned will be scheduled a few months out. Further details will be available once we set a specific date, but the goal is to give an advance warning as the downtime will likely be roughly 6-8 hours. I plan on collecting playtime data before deciding on a date and time to try and impact as few people as possible.

I've also ran diagnostics on other servers and have found no other hardware issues as of yet. The lag spikes experienced elsewhere are definitely software-related and that's what we're looking into. I'm hesitant on announcing the changes we make to address lag for a few reasons:

1) If they don't work, everyone is disappointed. Make no mistake, while some changes are no-brainers, others are more fine-tuning and won't yield results until they're running in live.

2) Even if they do work, lag can be caused by other issues and we'd rather not make everyone try to figure out if the last patch *really* worked or not. That's what our profiling tools are for!

Once we've made concrete progress, we can make a post detailing what we've done and what the results have been.

There's no third person view, but the camera-follows-animations feature is a toggle, as Retrograde mentioned. With it off, it'll stay as is now.
