Placing items on object surfaces so they sit in the air

When placing an item you can lock it to a grid by holding CTRL, this works on tiles and on objects with a surface to place item on. Love this grid placement.

I noticed that it's possible to place an item in the air (while still being on/attached to the object it's placed on) by using this f you get the angles right.

Hold CTRL while placing an item on an object, see if you can find a spot on the objects surface where the item grid snaps off of the object and into the air next to it. Continue holding ctrl.

Now use your cursor to carefully find a place on the objects surface that will let you place the item while while it is still in the air because it's locked to the grid. Click and place it.

Congrats your item is now floating, it is however still anchored to the object you placed it on.

 

Found that this works on cupboards, coffers, forges, some tables, and altars. Imgur album shows a few spots it works.

 

Edit: Wasn't sure if this worked better in client or server section, posted in client since it made sense if the client is what allows it to be placed like this.
