Wurm on ads.google.com

Recommended Posts

I think you'd be better off trying to submit this game to Gaming Review/News Sites and working with them to get more exposure.  I don't see Google as the place to find games.  When I find new games to play it's either from some gaming website or Steam or word of mouth or in my news feed because of a game update that was reviewed.  Same with my kids and their friends.  They don't search Google for games.  I found WurmOnline through MassivelyOP almost 4 years ago.  These review sites might even list the game for free since they get ad money generated by more games they put on their site.

Google only seems to fit if people know to search for Wurm Online.  If I was to search for "MMO games" on Google, Wurm would never show up.  I never see any news on the 14 RSS gaming news sites I subscribe to about Wurm Online.  Seems MassivelyOP doesn't update about Wurm Online anymore either since spring 2018.

they should hire you as ad campaign manager maybe

For sure not. If Code Club decide to do this, they should hire someone with real experience.

As someone who has played  this game for quite a while on and off and someone who has a little experience in ads. WO marketing would need to be SUPER targeted in my opinion. Just using the "mmo" or "sandbox" keywords aren't good.

"1000, out of that 800 will download game and try it atlast."

No, and no. Out of 1000 people who click maybe 1-5% will actually bother downloading the game, no where near 80%. Getting someone on the page is hard enough getting them to download something even harder.

Yes, WO needs more adverting! Will we ever get it? Who knows. Ads are expensive. Actually getting a conversion from those ads is even more expensive. I dont blame Code Club for putting advertising on the back burner.

You need to figure out some more terms/tags to use.

Like:

"survival game"

"survival mmo"

"open world"

"open world mmo"

"open world game"

"open world pvp"

"sandbox pvp"

"cooking" - under game related tags

"free to play" - it is technically until you hit skill limit.

"sandbox housing"

"open world housing"

"place house anywhere mmo"

Put minecraft tags in there too.  It's generally the same.  People looking for minecraft start seeing stuff about Wurm Online.  Make sure to reference Rolf and Notch's name to give relevance to Wurm Online if they are searched.

Now can even tag for "fishing game" since they changed that up.  People looking for fishing games and see a reference to Wurm Online.

Need to figure out a LOT more tags to use for google searches.  The system is based on logic.  Just saying "online mmo" is not enough and waste of money.

Real marketing results are based on the wording of the tags for one.  Wording of the website for the search engine crawler bot also.  They going to crawl the website no matter what so make it searchable so it can auto tag and bring it up the list of results.

SEO at it's finest.  Guess you in over your head.  lol  There is so much more to it than this too.  Companies charge $3k/per month just to do this stuff for other companies and make sure they on point in search results.

Gonna have to go out of my way and sign in to forums to mention what a terrible, poorly thought out plan this is.

First of all the ad copy is horrible, but someone else with an understanding of what you can do in the game (and basic grammar) could probably fix that.

The choice of ad vendor, keywords, and target markets is also poorly considered but I won't even get into that. The real issue is what happens if through some miracle these ads actually brought in players.

Recruitment is only one part of increasing user numbers. Retention is the better part of that. The new tutorial system may help some, but we need time to verify and possibly tweak that. Also the various performance issues (and especially the community sentiment around them) should be addressed before wasting our "one shot" at convincing most people to play. Limited runs of much more specifically targeted ads in order to bring in users and gather retention and conversion statistics could be useful as changes are made. Carpet bombing ads at the mainstream like this, at this time, could only serve to attract more people who would leave with a bad taste in their mouths and probably share that with friends. Negativity always travels farther than praise.

-1 to letting this guy do anything that and -1 to a focus on advertising at all at this point.

PS if you really want to do something to raise numbers skip the ads and go interact with people through some means, get to know them, and invite the ones who might actually enjoy the game to join. That way you bring in a select and targeted group through networking and "viral" interactions rather than tossing money at ads so that more bored 15 year olds come, drop things on obstreperous veteran's lawns and quit the game.

I have a distinct feeling that Rolf wants to be asked before players start to market his game in this way.

I seem to recall there beeing some rule about it even?

And didn't Rolf hire staff to look in to marketing?

I seem to recall that from the so called "roadmap"!

I would not take anything posted in this topic as a valid permission to run ads in Wurms name.

I like the idea of wurm adds. Most of my friends never heard of Wurm.

Its +1 from me.
And we must be realistic this game is boring like hell. I always think of it like "retirement hous for old gamers". Its full of old grumpy decent peoples :)

Very good idea

WURM need more people, more noobs, not only mega-ultra-hight skilled gamers, this is booooooring game with failing economic. So calmly who will play this will be played, who will not, want to kick with a shovel, hit with an ax, and go in a counter strike or  in another game to play.

So sad that players are forced to take money out of their own pockets to advertise your game, it literally makes me sad

I am sure that your idea is based on a desire- like most people here- to see Wurm thrive.

I do have a concern however that you are thinking of banning people from the largest democracy in the world from playing Wurm (unless I have got you wrong in which case I apologise) I am sure that Rolf and the whole team would love to have an influx of people from India playing Wurm Online and Wurm Unlimited?

The person in question is not banning players, they are blocking countries from seeing their ads in google searches to optimize the ROI of their ad campaign.  If someone else can find a profitable way to run ads in these countries, giddyup.
