Performance help, please

Since just before the release of the Modern renderer, I notice that whenever I enter a village, my frame rate plummets -- well under 1 FPS. Out in the wilds, I'm fine. I play primarily on Independence. Switching renderers hasn't helped. Lowering the draw distance (reasonably, i.e., Extreme to Long, Long to Medium) hasn't helped. The only posts I've found about performance are outdated.

 

What information can I provide so someone can help me?

GeForce 9800 GT is getting to be very old (July 2008, and based on the even older 8800 series). Great in its day, but it might not support some of the newer OpenGL features. If this is a desktop, a new graphics  card is an option.  Do you know which Hewlett Packard model this is?  Is the CPU a AMD A10-6700, and if not do you now what CPU?  Do you know what power supply? usually hewlett Packards PSUs are not great but you might have replaced it already for the 9800GT? Usually 9800GT wants a 400/450W PSU and Heweltt Packard tends to ship a lot of theirs with 300/350W and lower power supplies. If you have been running the 9800GT on a lower power, it might be literally wearing out the power supply and that could cause it to start to choke. If it is 400/450W though that is not an issue. If a new graphics card is an option, let us know your budget, the NVidia 1050ti can be fairly decent at a budget price.  If that is too much, a secondhand 750ti would still be a good improvement.

 

 

edit: looks like this is your system?   Is it still using the original 300W PSU or did you  later upgrade that?   If it is the original 300W, that could be causing issues, either with the 9800GT or any of the cards I listed as upgrades.

 

 

Do you notice more issues in "urban" areas that also have water?

I don't see a driver version but you could try going direct to NVidia for an updated graphics driver (do NOT use Windows Update or Hewlett Packard for the driverhttps://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

 

Sometimes the right driver can make an amazing difference even with an older card, and it might be that Win10 gave you a microsoft driver that is not keen about running OpenGL games, so be sure to get the nvidia version of the driver, not the microsoft version.

edit: probably this driver -- it's already several years old but apparently NVidia is no longer supporting the 9800GT with any newer drivers.

I never install ANYTHING but the driver itself, and maybe PhysX if I am not sure it is already installed. Geforce and AMD now load up their driver packages with a lot of frilly "extras," to me they are bloatware and I avoid (someone else may actually like and use them but I like a lean cleangaming machine for best performance...)

Some of these are pretty basic, but I never know which ones people already know. "Method 5" (switching computer to "best performance" not "best appearance" is one of the first things I do on any computer.

It's definitely due to that old graphics card, biggest issue with it is the low memory size - try decreasing all the texture size/detail settings to the lowest. Don't use the modern renderer on it either, will just make it worse.
