Posted September 3, 2018 Obsidian would be pretty great to have. Its pure blackness, shine, and workability could lend their hands to many great things.

Posted September 4, 2018 What would we use obsidian for? It doesn't really fit the uses of most other things we have... except crude tools. Ornamental pavement? Jewellery?

Jewellery? scalpels so we can operate bad wounds on wurmians... Yeah can't think of much use beside arrow heads, crude weapons, jewelery or decorative small statues maybe... Maybe something related to magic can be suggested for it but can'tthink of anything now
Posted September 5, 2018 A few ideas to make obsidian useful and distinct but not dominant. Bricks and shards for construction Gem Creation: use a hammer (Jewelry Smithing skill) on a shard to get an obsidian gem, or likely nothing (fail). Consume the entire shard on each attempt. Knapp obsidian shards to create obsidian blades. Use blades to create weapons with very high creation QL but can't be repaired. Otherwise equal to iron weapons. EX: 20 obsidian blades + shaft + handle = obsidian long sword. EX: Obsidiant blade + arrow shaft = Obsidian Arrow. QL = Fletching skill + 10% but breaks after a single use, leaves just a shaft on the ground. Maybe obsidian weapons are very likely to shatter on a failed enchantment. Posted September 5, 2018 Obsidian bricks for construction don't really make sense to me. The stuff is basically glass, not sturdy building material. Slate bricks are already pushing it. I like the idea of tools and weapons at high creation QL (and maybe special properties) but that can't be repaired, though, and creating decorative stuff and gems.
Posted September 6, 2018 Glass (and obsidian) is brittle, but it's far from weak. It just tends to fail catastrophically instead of gradually degrading like typical building materials. The real limitations in the real world is supply and difficulty in working it rather than mechanical weakness.
