The Flip Side: What do you LOVE about Wurm?

Recommended Posts

Fair is fair. I made a thread while frustrated with a game I love. So let's let everyone, even the devs, see what we LOVE about Wurm:

I love that there is always something else to do. Even when your deed is built, you have all your animals just as you want them, you have all your tools, your fields are tended, you can find something to do.

I love getting on my horse and just riding, never opening a map. So many times, even after 2+ years I see something that makes me say wow. OK, sometimes those "wow"s have a few other words before and after them, but it is still incredible. (Who can forget five trolls, plus a myriad of other beasts following you up a hill??)

I love the community. Even when I dislike someone, they are (almost) always an integral part of our community.

And, I can't stress this enough, I love LOVE LOVE how this game, even after all it's years, is still evolving. New content is added often, things are changing. I have played other games that never saw a change after the first year or two.

The tight knit pvp community, some people may come off as toxic but ingame most of the times I played with a core group of people that were fun to play with, and is what made wurm fun more than any of the mechanics that existed.  Buncha bored people drinking blabbering in teamspeak/ingame while we ran around the map or even just while on deed crafting or running in circles.  I pretty much cannot play wurm alone, it's ridiculously boring

I used to love the economy, in total. But these days I like the quality system, nothing like it anywhere else and it makes sense.

Crafting was always big, hated for example in WoW how everyone crafts the same stuff and it is never great, but in Wurm you can dedicate yourself to a craft and perfect items, and make them unique.

Personal impact, no game I have ever played before has allowed for so much personal impact from the user, I touched on this in another thread like this. The amount of world impact and personal impact you can have on others is monumental. What you build stays, good and bad.

PvP, I never got a rush from a video game in terms of combat as I did in Wurm, which is funny because wurm has some of the worst combat of any game I ever played. I cannot seem to get that rush anymore unless I am literally gambling at a casino or in options on stocks.

The community is pretty great like gary said above, and contrary to popular belief I do not really hate anyone, well I actually think that gladiator guy is a prick but he might be okay in game. I think the community in wurm is pretty good in how close it is, but this can cause problems too. (Oh also I do not like Mol Rehan Wild/EMR but not specific individuals just the group itself.)

Finally, personal connections. I have never played a game that offers the same level of personal connections that wurm online has, when you sit around in wurm crafting all day in a voice comms with other people, you start talking about real life, hobbies, politics, and more. You actually make friends with these people its crazy. I actually met some of these folks in real life, notably Zehive (bagsecg) and Cubeman, with a run in to Rottenpie.

Terraforming.  No other game can do it like Wurm Online.

Forgot to mention no cookie cutter housing.

Terraforming for sure. The map and traveling. While it take time to travel, I really enjoy it. Basically everything in the game is what people made it. Getting somewhere in skills make it worth it. It not "Oh, I'll spend a week and get 90+ skill" like a lot of games did.

Land ownership.  No other game gives a sense of true ownership and claiming something as your own like Wurm does. To that end, I will add the building system.  to be able to plan, create and update buildings with such a vast amount of mix-n-match pieces and parts will probably be one of Wurm's greatest accomplishments.

The ability to shape the land you can also rent/own.

The ability to design a House as I want it to (mostly anyhow, even though I would love more options / elements, not texture wise but like diagonal walls or be able to actually make a round tower and such, proper balcony elements so they count as roof and it wont rain into my house that I made with a makeshift balcony.).

I guess simply put, to make myself a nice home which includes all the features surrounding this topic.

The relaxed atmosphere the game creates with the environment, very chill compared to other games.

The feeling of accomplishment when you actually manage to finish a project you have been working on for a while and then its there in all its glory, modern games seriously lack this.

How the staff improves existing things, taking the experience even further (cooking or just placing things on things).

(obligatory brown nose line, check)

Like Hate, to Love Wurm I can't relate. Just too strong a word that many use casually. Anyway, the most special part of Wurm to me is my deed that I made when Deliverance opened, now almost 7 years ago. Enduring and slowly progressing over that time by adding new touches to it. Then wandering the Village grounds through the tall forested surroundings. Seemingly a sacred space that can't be found out in RL due to many circumstances, so it would be a sanctuary and retreat from the world. Then as the years pass it remains as a reminder of times passage, yet all blended together in its harmony. None can really know it other than myself. They can only catch glimpses of the meaning of it all, which even then is shaded slightly out of focus by their own perceptions. Maybe I spend too much time alone there but that is how my life goes, not constrained by any others judgments. For if you can't live your virtual life (RL) by your own standards, who are you then really.

Happy Trails

It's def. the terraforming together with the ability to get "your own claim of land to do whatever you want with it (and the engine allows)" :). Or in short terms: The highest level of freedom i've ever seen in a game yet :)

All the sandbox elements. It's a truly unique game.

Not much else that needs to be said.

the open world, starting from scratch barely surviving to building up a nice little cottage deed and developing into a full blown town.

Being able to head out into the wild and it feeling like your actually in the wild and need to worry about survival.

range of stuff you can build and make without going outside of the medieval/Renascence era

being able to design and make my own maps/servers

the long term skill gain system - spreads users out and encourages choosing a profession rather than just learning everything

What do I love about wurm? Looking at the screen to click 1-3 times and study, repeat. Wurm is the only reason I can maintain all A's in college. Then when all studying is done, head out to do something that takes more attention like picking fruits from trees, making affinity food, etc. its like nicotine gum for gaming... at least for me. Other games simply take too much attention from me.

Walking away from my forge 10 tiles to meditate, man just that moment to get out and see the out doors and think about the meaning of life.

The subtle joys of Wurm are the things that fill my heart.  They're the things that keep me coming back again and again.  To name a few:

  1.  Atmospheric modeling: the wind and the rain drive the motion of the clouds and it feels more realistic than other games I've played.  Sometimes I'll find that I'd planned on mining underground only to have the dawn arrive with a bright cool sky and no wind.  Who wants to be underground on a beautiful day like that?  And I'll wind up changing my plans for the evening just based on the weather?  Yes.
  2. The ambient sounds - the croak of the frogs on the shore, the wind across the steppes and the chimes at night, the birdsong in the morning, the sound of a gale wind through the trees.
  3. The heavens - the fact that we have a planetary system, stars that rotate around us.  Some nights I just love looking up at the night sky before I turn in myself.
  4. I will never be able to own a second home, and Wurm becomes that second home for me. I still have years of plans for the old deed, and yet when it sometimes feels like too much work...
  5. Getting out of the house and taking a long ride about the island.  Sometimes even packing a tent and food for a much longer adventure.  Finding parts of the island that one still has never laid eyes on even after all these years.
  6. And finally: Sunsets.  I must have seen this sunset hundreds of times from the balcony of the smithy.  It never gets old.  It's what brought me back after a long absence and part of what keeps me here.

I just posted in the "What I hate about Wurm" hence I feel obligated to also post on here. I am on forums cause clearly - I love the game.

I love:
- The terraforming aspects of the game
- The amount of choices, like wall/fence types and the ability to use them however you please (lots of games have template houses ? Nothing kills my motivation as being stuck with very limited design choices!)
- I love having actual in game neighbors and seeing everyones amazing creativity with this game. From my perspective, Wurm becomes like a very entertaining chat engine where you get to know people while having something else to do - and it gives us common ground to relate to and inspire eachother
- Animal keeping and use of (a)live animals (might sound silly, but a lot of other sandbox games lack this one aspect which means a lot to me personally - going around killing stuff as the only means of collecting things just isn't my style)

I love the "bigness" of Wurm, not so much the map sizes, but the sheer number of possible interesting courses of action. That's what keeps me playing.
