Wurm Startup hangs

Just in the last 2 days, when I click Wurm Startup, it just hangs for a very long time. More than half the time, it remains in "Not responding" for so long that I have to just shut it down and try again. I just removed, then reinstalled WU on my computer, in case that was the remedy, but now I can't get in at all.  It is just stuck at "Not responding," with an annoying black rectangle in the center of my screen that appears to be always on top.

Does anyone know what might be going on, and how I can get back into the game?

 

EDIT:  After a full 5 minutes, I finally see the server list to sign in from. But when I click any of my toon names, it takes another few minutes for it to register. Something's definitely not right here.

Once I have the proper toon name up, it is all normal speed again, and I can log in to any server without delay or problems.

I have a vague memory of having had some similar type of problem in the past. That time, there was some file that I had to empty and then all worked fine again.  Is that helpful in figuring out what's wrong, or maybe it's totally unrelated. Thanks for any help you can offer!

This is the usual causee of the launcher loading after about a 5-10 minute hang, occurs also if you change characters to an alt, but not if you change servers:

 

 

scroll down to the part where Bigsteve mentions keybindings. It does not happen so much anymore because the issue was "patched", but Retrograde says people who still have their original keybindings from before that period may never have gotten it cleaned out right (or it could be the bug was reintroduced  ... naw)

 

If this is the issue it will be happening gradually over time getting worse and worse till it is nearly unplayable. The way to know is to check the filesize of keybindings.txt -- if it is 3kb this is not the issue. If it is closer to 10 megabytes, it is the issue.

Aha!  It was keybindings that was mentioned before!  I had forgotten. I do have old keybindings, so THANK YOU for this help!

Here is what I would probably do in your case:

 

1) rename keybindings.txt to OLDBINDINGS.txt

2) launch the game with NO keybinding file so that it regenerates a fresh "new" one that is covered by the fix

3) open OLDBINDINGS.txt, and copy paste anything you want from your old file into the new one (leaving out of course any spammed/duplicate lines). Save the file. .Delete OLDBINDINGS.txt so you do not try to reuse that file in the future.

4) Now you have a "good" updated, personalized keybindings.txt that should be covered by the fix so this whole thing does not repeat itself again in 6 months.  

 

If you keep the old file, just "cleaning it up" of duplicaate lines, then it looks like you are still vulnerable to the bug and will have the issue again down the road when you might forget how to fix it (and next time the solution might get missed if no one notices your next post)

I deleted it completely and did a fresh download of WU. Do you think that is enough, or would I still have to do this?

Forgive me for necro'ing an old thread. I have this exact problem and I have done everything mentioned in the post.I also uninstalled and reinstalled steam. Any other reasons this could be happening? What information do you need?

regardless of reinstalling steam, please look for this file:

 

\steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\WurmLauncher\PlayerFiles\configs\default\keybindings.txt

 

Check also any custom keybindings in

\steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\WurmLauncher\PlayerFiles\configs\edited

 

Post here what the filesize is. (If it is under 10kb, it is fine; if it is over 5 megabytes, delete the file. However, you lose all keybindings doing this, so let me know if you need a solution that does NOT lose any hotkey settings, which is a little more complicated but not too terrible. )

 

 

 

When you say the issue is "exactly" the same, that means ALL of the following: there is a lag on the initial login of a character, +PLUS+ NO lag if that same character then logs into a different server, +PLUS+ lag again if you instead switch characters.  If instead it simply hangs when trying to log in and not any of the other issues (perhaps you never even get ingame), then it is a different issue and we need to see the console.log file for that character.  (let me know if you need any help locating these files or how to post them)

 

Sorry for the delay, I was trying to figure out how the issue could be the same if a corrupted keybindings.txt was not the issue, but I think you misunderstood that reinstalling steam would fix that issue -- it apparently does not, as it appears some versions of Windows (likely Win8/10) keeps "synced" backup files of certain program configs and replace them if you later reinstall the program.  This is most likely the case if you installed Steam into the default USERS or Program Files type folder, which Windows treats as special protected file locations. I usually recommend never installing steam or games to a protected system location, and instead use something like D:\Steam or C:\Games as Windows  is less likely to try to "help" by keeping backups that get replaced if you reinstalled. However, that is something a little complicated for some windows users who always install using the "recommend" default settings. 

 

Please clarify any issues you think I might have misunderstood. :D

When I press the play button for wurm unlimited, it takes over 2 minutes before I see the load screen for server select. This happens regardless of server selection or character selection. My keybindings.txt is 3kb so that is not the issue, however I don't have the \steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\WurmLauncher\PlayerFiles\configs\edited file on my pc,( that I can find). Once I am in game I experience a "pause" in game about every 5 minutes. Nothing is running in the background and Wurm seems to be the only place this happens.

Well, its not the exact same issue, since the previous ones were all about the keybindings and yours is not that issue.

Also they did not have the "pause" ingame every five minutes. Once they got ingame, they were fine unless they tried to switch characters (loading up the problematic keybindings file)

 

You don't have multiple monitors, correct?

 

Did this just start very recently? Or it has been happening for weeks/months?

I do have dual monitors and read in another forum that it could cause problems. I disconnected the 2nd monitor and restarted the pc. Started Wurm Unlimited and it made no difference at all, same thing happened. This has been happening for a couple of weeks, at first it was a slight delay and now it is over 2 minutes. While it is launching the game I can't do anything else on the pc because the cursor becomes slower than a snail.

 

Also I checked the resource monitor and once I press the play button, within 5 seconds, wurm launcher uses 100% of the cpu on all 4 cores.

 

Was that the console log you wanted?

Yes, thats the correct console log. I don't know what is causing it.

 

This part sounds exactly like the keybindings issues, "This has been happening for a couple of weeks, at first it was a slight delay and now it is over 2 minutes."

 

But that is clearly not the issue and I do not know what is wrong :(
