Posted October 15, 2017 Hi, when I launch Wurm Unlimited from Steam, it says running for maybe a second or two and then stops. I am unable to find any error logs of the sort described in other posts about crashes. I see in other posts that a common solution is to turn of VBO in the settings, but I presume I have to run the clients to be able to change that. Anyone have any suggestions? Posted October 15, 2017 (edited) Can you post a DXDIAG report here (Start>Search>type DXDIAG, enter, click "SAVE ALL INFORMATION", post the entire thing. That will at least allow us to see if there is an issue with hardware /drivers. Wurm Unlimited Minimum Specs: MINIMUM: OS: Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10 Processor: 2.6 GHZ Intel Core 2 DUO or equivalent AMD CPU Memory: 4 GB RAM Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GT 4xx , Radeon HD 5xxx Storage: 3000 MB available space Additional Notes: Java Version 8 it is sometimes still possible to run on older hardware than listed, some intel graphics chipsets will work, but very old chipsets such as the intel 965 series probably will not be able to run the OpenGL requirements. Posted October 16, 2017 (edited) Hey there. I'm having the exact same problem. Steam lists the game as "running" for about 2 seconds, maybe even 1, and then returns to normal. No splash screen, no nothing. I, one by one, closed down every open application on my computer and tried to rerun the client, only to have the problem happen again. Any help would be great. Thanks! Posted October 17, 2017 (edited) Anders Kastanjj -- 1. Can you check this folder :\steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\_CommonRedist\vcredist and make sure to install or reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ files for 2010, 2012 2013 as this was causing some people to crash when launching 2. Also run the game launcher "As Administrator" 3. Run with NO MODS for now as some mods have been crashing the game launch since the 1.5 WU patch. 4. Try logging into a couple of vanilla public servers just to test whether it is an issue with a specific server or offline mode 5. Rename also the folder \steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\WurmLauncher\PlayerFiles\configs from CONFIGS to CONFIGSTEST to force the game to regenerate game settings to vanilla default, DO NOT CHANGE to fullscreen or any other settings at all until the crashing issue is solved (fullscreen seems to cause some crashes for some) 6. Have STEAM check integrity of local files 7. Check TaskMgr and make sure no "stuck" copies of the game executable are still running If all of those fail, you might need to try a full uninstall/reinstall. Has this computer ever run WURM ok in the past? (Certianly the hardware specs are all looking great) Edited October 17, 2017 by Brash_Endeavors
Posted October 17, 2017 I don't know if this is related, but just in case... I ran patcher.bat from steamapps-->common-->wurm unlimited-->wurmlauncher this morning. Right after that, my client started crashing immediately when trying to log into any WU server. I went in and renamed Livemap.properties to Livemap.disabled in the wurmlauncher-->mods folder. Now again able to log in to WU servers without any issue at all. This was my first time running patcher.bat since the latest WU updates. I had been playing without Livemap. Therefore, I think Livemap was my issue. It may be yours as well. Thought I'd share the info just in case. Good luck.
Posted October 17, 2017 Brash_Endeavors, Thanks for the guidance. No dice so far. Here's what's going on: 1. Can you check this folder :\steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\_CommonRedist\vcredist and make sure to install or reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ files for 2010, 2012 2013 as this was causing some people to crash when launching -- Each file was uninstalled and reinstalled. Attempted to load game. Listed as "running" in steam for about 2 seconds, then nothing. 2. Also run the game launcher "As Administrator" -- Did so. Did not even list as "running" in steam. 3. Run with NO MODS for now as some mods have been crashing the game launch since the 1.5 WU patch. -- I have no mods installed. 4. Try logging into a couple of vanilla public servers just to test whether it is an issue with a specific server or offline mode -- I can't get the game to load. 5. Rename also the folder \steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\WurmLauncher\PlayerFiles\configs from CONFIGS to CONFIGSTEST to force the game to regenerate game settings to vanilla default, DO NOT CHANGE to fullscreen or any other settings at all until the crashing issue is solved (fullscreen seems to cause some crashes for some) -- I do not have that folder. In the WurmLauncher folder, the sub-directories are: "lib," "nativlibs," and "packs." 6. Have STEAM check integrity of local files -- Done. All is good there. 7. Check TaskMgr and make sure no "stuck" copies of the game executable are still running -- No stuck files. Additionally, I have installed java. Rebooted. Reinstalled. Rebooted, and the reinstalled once more. I've reverted my nvidia three-screen surround display to three, individual screens, just in case it was a graphical thing, but no dice there either. Is there any command I can type into the the "set launch options" of steam so that it generates an error log as it loads up? If I knew where it was crashing, that'd be great, but, I don't even know where to start. I've never run Wurm before. I saw great reviews, and opted to download it since my guild is playing it (without me) right now. Perhaps I need to wait for the next patch? Thanks for all the help so far! I really appreciate it. Posted October 18, 2017 (edited) AndersKastanjj, Normally you would not need to install JAVA as it comes prebundled in the steam version. There might be issues if you changed the default java paths in windows settings, then updated java so that path no longer exists. If you never edited the java variables this should not be an issue. 1) Is this running from a home network, or from a work/school network? 2) Do you use any custom firewalls besides the windows one? 3) One thing I would want to test is whether the unique montior setup is affecting it, is it possible to run it on one normal monitor as a test? 4) Do you happen to have one of the earlier Minecraft game versions? I am not sure what happened to them after microsoft took over, but it used to be that the two games were coded rather similar (Notch was an original dev on both games), and often a crash in one game wotud also cause a crash in the other. Because of Minecrafts huge userbase, it used to be easy to find a solution in the Minecraft forums for Wurm problems, though I am not sure whetrher that is still true. This USUALLY is not an issue in the Steam version of the game, but check this in case: You can also test running the FREE download for the Wurm Online original MMO game, mostly just to see whether that gives the same resukts: https://www.wurmonline.com/ (there is a monthly subscription ONLY for people who want to unlock higher skill levels, which is not an issue for a quick test, you do not need to give a credit card or any personal info) Are these monitors 4k monitors? I seem to recall hearing Wurm had an issue with 4K, so i would test with ONE monitor set to some generic resolution such as 1920x1080 or similar just to rule that out. I don;t think there is a command code to force an error log. Be sure to look inside this folder, you are looking for anything that can be opened in notepad and says CLIENT, LOGS, CONSOLE, and especially anything that says HS_ERR_PID (check the desktop also) \steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\WurmLauncher I am not able to "read"/decipher most logs other than looking for a few "usual suspects", but if we can get an actual log of some sort we might be able to get one of the wurm developers to look it over. There are probably also Windows Event VIewer Logs that can help, but I am no good with those. However others can read those and figure out something. Posted October 18, 2017 Brash, Per your questions: 1) Is this running from a home network, or from a work/school network? Yes, home network, but the game isn't even loading, as if there is something wrong with the book sequence. 2) Do you use any custom firewalls besides the windows one? I use kaspersky, but I've tried running the game with kaspersky off, and even rebooted my computer without kaspersky. No dice. 3) One thing I would want to test is whether the unique montior setup is affecting it, is it possible to run it on one normal monitor as a test? I just checked that. I unplugged all but one monitor and rebooted. No dice. It's funny you mention Minecraft. I just installed it and it works fine but, earlier versions wouldn't run at all on my computer. I could never figure out why. Perhaps there is a java issue, somewhere? Additionally, sorry for being so troublesome here, but I really appreciate the help. It means a lot and, I'm really looking forward to playing this with my guildies.

I could never figure out why. Perhaps there is a java issue, somewhere? it could be JAVA but it could also be an OpenGL issue. Because Microsoft pushes its own proprietary DirectX, it tends not to offer much support for OpenGL, including in it's graphics drivers. It's possible that since Microsoft took over Minecraft, they changed / tweaked the game to not be so "independent" of DirectX, or at least to avoid any OpenGL issues that might cause conflicts wither their own generic drivers. That would make me suspicious that Windows Update had installed their own Microsoft-made drivers on your system, at first I thought the build number of your driver indicated it was provided by NVidia, but looking through the Microsoft Update Catalog I see they also issue drivers with this build number, so I would probably try deleting the current driver and trying instead for a driver from the NVidia site, "just to be sure" I would look for any driver NOT numbered Driver Version: 22.21.13.8569 (aka 385.69), there might be some slightly newer or older. I persoanlly tend to skip instaling anything exceot the driver itself (ie, no "Experience" type software) as I find it more stable. Let me know whether a driver direct from NVidia makes any difference. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx I just checked and NVidia does have one released slightly newer than what you have now, 387.92 dated Oct 9 2017, it might be worth trying in case you are using a "Microsoft" version of 385.69. If possible, install "driver only" unless you actually NEED some of the other gunkware they are eager to also install. Interestingly, your driver has an OLDER version number but a NEWER file date, making me suspicious that Microsfot indeed re-wrote it themselves, so you might need to first UNINSTALL your current driver, else microsoft will claim their older version is "newer/better" Afterwards, do not ever let Windows update your graphics drivers for you, as they tend to replace everything with their own drivers, and those often have issues with OpenGL games (Wurm, older Minecraft versions, are the main ones I can name offhand) I can;t think offhand of any JAVA issue that should be a problem for WU because the STEAM version of WURM bundles in its own JAVA and very few people have issues with the JAVA and GAME in WU because of this (people in WO sometimes have issues, for 'complicated reasons'). An exception might be people who edited their windows settings to override which java version gets used You MIGHT check this thread, as the person here feels the JAVA version bundled with WURM has flaws and he has a solution he thinks will fix some crashes, I have no idea whether 1) he knows what he is talking about, or 2) whether this is even an issue in your case. if you decide to try his suggestion, please let me know whether it made any difference. I don;t like recommending it myself, but it if WORKS I need to know. OH one last question from me, did you happen to reinstall Win7 SP1 "semi recently" (say the last 3-6 months) Edited October 19, 2017 by Brash_Endeavors
Posted October 21, 2017 Brash, Thanks for everything so far. I followed your directions and updated my graphics driver but, no dice there. I'm running java with the debug console. When I run minecraft, java displays that secondary window telling me everything that is happening. However when I run wurm, I get no such window at all. So perhaps the glitch occurs before Java loads? As a final act of desperation, I upgraded from win 7 to 10. New video drivers, updates to java. Etc. The exact same things happens: Wurm lists as "running" in steam for about 2 seconds, and then stops. No error messages. No debugging screen. Nothing pops up in task manager. Posted October 21, 2017 (edited) >>As a final act of desperation, I upgraded from win 7 to 10 Ack, I am sorry. I am on Win7 myself because i am convinced Win10 "only makes everything worse". One reason I was asking whether you had recently changed/reinstalled Win7, is sometimes I have an issue with Windows giving me ownership of a hard drive I had before, I still have the same PC name but because windows uses some numerical ID in place on names, it does not consider the old "BrashPC" and the new "BrashPC" to be the same user, and is being a pita about letting me retake ownership, so I was curious whether you might have brought over secondary drives in a similar fashion. Another thing to check is looking to see whether Wurm might accidentally have been "forbidden" in the firewall settings. Did you say you have already tried reinstalling the game itself, or was that JAVA that was reinstalled? I went back through earlier posts to check but was not certain which it was that "Reinstalled." covered. Also make sure NOT to use the new java 9 as I am told that does not work with Wurm (it should not be an issue with Wu since they bundle a compatible older java, but if you installed java 9, try downgrading it to an earlier Java 8 version Edited October 21, 2017 by Brash_Endeavors
