Client Crash on Startup.

What is happening is I installed steam and Wurm Unlimited on an older, by a few years, desktop unit and had no problems. When I attempted to play the game it loads the server window but when I try to load the server I get a client crash that indicates it can not open the indicated window size. I have adjusted the window size to be the same as what the computer is running and that did not help. I changed it to full windowed mode and that did not help. I changed it to 100 pixels shy of the full size in windowed mode and that also did not help. I am not sure what else to do.

It's possible you might figure out what's wrong from the log file below, but if you can't, post the full log on the wurm unlimited forums, and someone else might be able to help you.

This " org.lwjgl.LWJGLException: Pixel format not accelerated " means your graphics hardware or software is not OpenGL capable.

 

There are several reasons why this can happen

  • you don't have OpenGL capable graphics hardware
  • you have OpenGL capable hardware but don't have OpenGL capable drivers installed
  • you have more than one graphic hardware, one of which is OpenGL capable but your graphics controller software (such as NVidia Geforce Experience or Catalyst Control Panel) decides that since it's Java it doesn't need to use your dedicated graphics hardware and uses your other hardware which isn't OpenGL capable.

Hope this gives some clues to solve the problem. If you need more help please post details of your computer brand and model so we can figure out what hardware you have.

Despite the message, it really has nothing to do with "window selected width and height"

It is exactly as Explora says, a problem with the OpenGL features of either graphic card hardware or driver

As it is an older computer, it could be either one. The driver is easiest to fix so try that first.

 

DO NOT GET AN UPDATED DRIVER THROUGH WINDOWS UPDATE. 

Microsoft tends to overwrite your drivers with their own DirectX generic driver that often lacks required features for OpenGL games.

This also occurs a lot with a FRESH INSTALL of Windows, using the default generic Windows driver

Try instead a driver direct from the system manufacturer:

 

 

 

If that does not help give the DXDIAG report  or some other indication of the computer model and/or specs:

 

HOW TO MAKE A DXDIAG REPORT:

1. Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press the letter R.
2. In the Run dialog that appears type "dxdiag" without the quotes in the text box and press Enter.
3. If you get a request asking to check if your drivers are digitally signed choose "Yes."
4. In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool that appears, in the bottom-right click "Save All Information..."
5. On your Desktop, save "DxDiag.txt"
6. Double click DxDiag.txt on your Desktop to open it, press Control-A to select all, Control-C to copy.
7. In your thread, click in the posting text box and press Control-V to paste the DxDiag.txt information into your initial post or an additional reply.

 

It will be quite long, that is ok, post all of it.

I had this happen to me.  I cannot fix it.  I did everything suggested here, and nothing has improved the situation.  The game simply won't play on my pc.  I have a pc with Win 10 and dual monitors.  I was in the game, and suddenly, both monitors went black.  One came back on, but at way low resolution.  I was able to close the game and other widows, and restart.  Both monitors show the same thing now, and i tried to fix that problem yesterday via win 10 forums.  Finally, I gave up on that because I couldn't fix it, so I just unhooked one of the monitors.  Assuming all was well, and I was just down to one monitor, I tried to load wurm today.  Got the same exact crash message as in the above post.  I did everything in this thread and the others about this issue, and nothing resolved it.  Any ideas?

That alnost always means a video driver issue. Now, if you get THAT exact message and were playing Wurm ok in the past and now you suddenly can't, it generally means one of two things -- the video driver was corrupted during the crash, or Win10 did an update and overwrote your "good" driver with a Microsoft windows driver (which are terrible for OpenGL games). It then can become harder to reinstall good drivers over the windows ones because windows "thinks" their drivers are better. You mgiht need to do a "CLEAN" driver install by first removing all video drivers then reinstalling, but do NOT use windows or windows update to install them or you will get the micosoft ones back again.  Also need to verify whether you are running Wurm Unlimited (aka Steam Version) or Wurm Online (aka MMO version), because this section is Wurm Unlimited tech help section and unless you clarify, I will assume this is WU (your pastposts however suggest you are pkaying WO). 

 

I can help you with it either way, if it is the exact same message. 

Can you look in your Wurm folders for two files, one named console.charactername.log or console.Nirav or something like that, the other one I need is named HS.ERR.PID (if there are several of those, look for the newest one).

If you can only find one, just post that for now.  You can either open the file in notepad, copy and paste the entire texct here, or you can upload the file to someplace like http://www.filedropper.com/ 

If you get stuck and are not sure what you are supposed to do or what i mean, just ask me to explain again and I will try reqording it. 

 

Also  it would help me a lot if I know wht=ether this is a laptop or desktop, and the exact computer make and model (usually it is something like:  Dell Latitude 14 7000  ,  MSI GT75VR , HP EliteBook x360, something like that. I am assuming it is not a system you built yourself, but let me know if it is.

We are working out in PMs, problem is an older Radeon HD 4200 that is not officially supported by Win10, he clearly had an older Radeon "Legacy" Win8 driver previous but it is tricky to get Win10 to reinstall this"unsupported" driver, you need to use special compatibility/troubleshooting options.

Right now we are discussing some lowcost cards (GTX650/GTX750) that he can get cheap and play nicer with Win10, as well as running modern games. He has a modern quadcore computer system and the only weak point seems to be the graphics.
