whats clad

Cladding is a cover/siding material placed over a wall, it's usually for aesthetics but can also have other purposes (maybe insulation too?).

(I am not sure if it is a term used more in Europe, as the first time I recall the word is after the Grenfell fire when inflammable material that covered the public housing tower was blamed for the fatal fire that killed over 70.)

In my part of the USA, we are more likely to use the word "siding".

In this case, it's from the May 18 update:

Cave building

  • Clad reinforced cave walls introduced.
    • Created by activating a trowel and building on a reinforced wall.

In my language clad (klädd) means covered in something, like a dress or insulation or whatever.

Anything dressed in something. People, houses, mountains...

Cladding Requires 10 Bricks (Sandstone, Rounded Stone, Slate, Marble, Stone) and 10 Mortar. Requires an activated trowel and right-clicking on a reinforced cave wall to start. You don't need the materials in your inventory to start the cladding, but will need them in your inventory to actually build it. To remove the clad, activate a crowbar and right-click the clad wall.

this is the only picture I have, I removed these clad walls after I took the pic.
