Placing a Guard Tower?

I've read up on it, but am still unsure. Do you actually stand 'on' the tile where you want to place it and face the direction you want the front.

 

Or, do you stand behind the tile, on a tile border behind the tile where you want to place it, and place it in the tile in front of you?

 

So, my confusion is whether you stand on the actual tile, or tile border, facing the tile where you want it placed.

When you start a guard tower, you can pick it up and move it to just the right spot before it gets too heavy. The owner can also rotate it so it doesn't have to be facing the direction you want it right off the bat. 

 

As for the other part of your question... I think it's just like dropping any item, it ends up right in front of you.

Stand at a corner and important face to center of the tile you want it on when adding last items , when it is finished creator can turn it to get the door where it is wanted.
