Loneliness in Wurm

Recommended Posts

Sadly, I've missed quite a few people because I can't merge chat windows. I enjoy talking with passerbys.

I remember when I first started out years ago, basic tools, no idea what I was doing, I died several times and was starting to lose patience when someone in local asked me if I needed help. They patched me up, gave me some survival advice (stay near water, most mobs cannot swim) and it totally changed my perspective. I continued on my way and bumped in to someone who offered me a plot of land in their village. They gave me some nails and so I started chopping down my first trees to make logs/planks. The fact that I got that help from those two complete strangers all those years ago has directly resulted in my longevity in the game.

You really can make a difference if you try.

Similar things happened to me! I got saved from the prison that is newspring by a helpful person in Freedom. :)

Its not always the new players who are benefited from stopping to talk to them. I met Ayuna here in the forums when she was looking for a village upon her return to Wurm. I invited her over, gave her tools, weapons, armor and a place to live. I spent maybe two days outfitting her.

I was repaid in a lot of adventure and fun. She took me on silly, but super fun expeditions, searches for lost stuff and just general "lets do stuff together!". She uplifted my spirit and gave me new things to do in the game.

Sometimes helping someone can lead to a lasting friendship and change your perspective of the game.

I still remember the names of the first 2 friends I ever made in any MMO, over 13 years ago now... Spudder and Cloudie_Sky.

I haven't spoken with them in probably 12.5 years, but the memory remains....

They were friendly when I was completely new to that game and MMOs in general. Looking back on it, they weren't much further ahead of me...a bit of help and good chat goes a long way.

Strangers in Wurm are certainly friendlier than those in any other game I have played, without exception.

When I started this game I was a HotS newb in Chaos awaiting death by more experienced players.
Instead of building a deed or a house the first thing I built was a rower cause I wanted to go sailing.
I finished my rower only to realize it was built in the Shroud Lake, not the bay that leads to the ocean.

Wynd who started a few months before me came around and I thought, "great, I'm about to die and have my rower stolen or destroyed."

Instead he grabbed a ship transporter and brought my boat to the water then told me, "Go for a sail, when you're done if you need a spot to stay at, come live with me."
I got out into the water and was immediately chased by like 12 Drake Spirits. I managed to escape, but was immediately headed to his village to live.

Nice strangers make this game what it is and prevent newbs from leaving.

I realize this isn't entirely on topic. But figured I'd add it in.

We all need to be nice to newbs(and everyone else for that matter) so we can grow the Wurm population.

Stop and wave to every new player you meet, because you don't know who may be lonely and dying for someone to talk to.

Just over this past week I've befriended two players who confided that they had no one to talk to or keep them company in-game. They were surprised and overjoyed when I waved to them first and then even engaged with them. One is a disabled player, for example. On a server that's fairly populous.

Not sure if every MMO out there has this problem. My gut says "no".

I have even had other players walk right through me, totally ignoring me even though I was emoting at them. It's a pretty awful feeling. This was on WU servers, but has happened more than once.  I understand that people are busy, but "virtual" rudeness and utter lack of caring is still a crappy way to treat someone, and caused me to question my choice to try to play on those servers.  Have also had more experienced players (at the time -- before my bazillion hours of play) actually mock my inability to figure out how to set up and begin. The game is obvious to me NOW, but we need to realize that it's a huge amount of info for a newbie to take in all at once, especially if they have no gaming background at all. It can be a lonely, scary world when you're brand new!

I say hi and try to have a chat to everyone who passes in local. I usually ask if they are passing through or moving in and offer help or advice on the area.

I'm currently in the process of building an inn on Xanadu. The idea is that if one lost player uses it for shelter and/or rest, it's worth the work. So far I'm planning to have free cotton, some food/drink, basic horses and supplies on offer, as well as beds of course. I'll have a merchant selling other things but some basic essentials will be free.

Toying with selling cheap private rooms. Was thinking I could sell paper that if mailed to me grants private access for a certain period.

Hell just name your forge Wilson and you will not feel lonely.

I have an inn as well. It would be awesome if door locks still had keys. You could put them on a merchant and allow people to walk through the specific door with it. But I suppose it screws with building permissions.

Personally I just leave doors open for people to use. Furniture is more decorative than anything, and I can always lock a specific door for longer stays who want their own chest. But then again no one will come visit. Im in an island after all. :D

Yeah that's why I might try the papers idea for rooms. It will only be a couple I think, the rest are free. Just in case anyone has stuff they want to keep private for a bit.

As your inn, mine might never get visitors either but it's there in case. Meanwhile I'll be working my cooking skills. 😉

Im thinking of finishing my island project and selling it, then moving to an inland spot in North Xanadu and making a highway towards it, then advertise it as a hunting location. Might be more useful and maybe see some traffic from people who want to casually hunt but not make their own deeds. Same deal, renting out rooms for long terms only.

Dunno. Maybe I am just dreaming :D

Just live near a market, you'll always catch somebody in local.

Or come to chaos and stand outside one of our deeds, you'll have players rushing to kill meet you

Sadly, with PvP all but dying out, the huge institutes of recruiting kingdoms are leaving.

I was lucky to be part of the PMK Empire of Mol Rehan. During my time there, from start to finish, we recruited, trained, socialised with, and met over 500 unique people from both PvP and PvE backgrounds.

If the game has any chance of survival, these really need to be made a priority.

I started on wild, spawn killed a few times by tonygreen... JK players gave me a chance even coming to rid the landing of him for me.  Always take a chance on people... dont lose our humanity and compassion towards others.  I'll never forget people like Duce who coached me and helped me out.

I get this feeling, lately it seems like my deed i've been living on has gone inactive so i've been sitting by myself for a few weeks now...

So now it feels like this sometimes... lol --

Wurm is not the same game when playing alone vs around people. I can't imagine living out in the middle of nowhere all by myself like some do - Id lose my mind ( more than I already have B) ). I'm thankful for all those Ive met in my wurm time who message me a simple "hello" randomly. I always try to o/ when I see someone new pass through local and have had many people stick around because of it. Wurm can be a rough game to someone new coming in, just having a little guidance for them goes a long way.

Well around  my parts there is a new deed Glasshollow Capital City . It is being built but taking in new players.. I have met several new players, gave them a place to stay at my hotel .. just down the road from the Capital City while new residences are being built.  They were grateful for the help and for someone to chat with..

If it was not for ArthurHawkwing who told me about Silverglass,  I am not sure I would have made it in this game. Now I have my own deed and I feel it is my duty to help other new players.. It can really make a difference if they stay or go.

Glasshollow Capital City, Offers a place to stay and learn. It is an academy.

My hotel is on the way Ravens Wing is the name of the hotel.. if you need a place to rest.. 5 beds and oven, and water provided if in need of anything else just ask.

I go through phases of being social and then less social. Wurm is generally better than most MMOs because at least the players are more my age and over that phase of running around screaming obscenities. Mostly. :D  Indy is pretty friendly and I'm glad I moved there.

Makes note: next time Neenee is online start spamming local with obscenities.

We should have a hotel/inn overlay on the Xan map. :) New player refuge spots, free beds and/or supplies. The only problem there is that new players might not know about the map I guess.

When I finally get mine built (currently waiting for a friend to plan), I'll ask on the forum for ideas on what I can provide for any passing players. Though in my case if you pass my deed you are well and truly lost. :) So far I was thinking free beds (ability to buy private access to a room if desired), free food/water, some supplies like cotton and maybe some basic tools. I'll also have a merchant for some more expensive stuff, but always free stuff as well. The tricky part i guess is getting the perms right for the building. Public pickup and then anything that needs restricting in locked off rooms, like my workroom. Will have some basic horses for free as well and ropes to lead/ride them.

All a way off yet as I need to first build the inn and make some furniture. ;) It's all just in my head at the moment. Down at O20 SE corner on the road, look out for The Three Legged Troll if you ever pass.
